I really enjoyed your post @wizardave! Reading it reminded me of my own childhood. My mother grew up on a dairy farm that had been in her father's side of the family since shortly before the Civil War.
I still have fond memories of climbing the outside ladder on the twin grain silos that are at least 100 feet high by sight measure. I'll try to post some pics of them soon. The farm hasn't been operational for about 30 years and most of it has been swallowed up by Kudzu.
The stock market crash of 1929 wiped out many small farmers and forced people back into the cities in order to keep working. My great-grandparents struggled a good bit but they survived due to their resiliency and knowledge of living off the land. This is what most people in the world are cut off from today and it's exactly what we have to get back to if we are to survive what's to come!
