when a league presents the challenge between the first two teams in the standings, you usually have the feeling of being in front of a crucial junction of the season, and the derby Milan-Inter, which will be staged at San Siro on Sunday afternoon, does not seem to be an exception to this rule.
After an entire round spent looking down on everyone, Milan lost the lead last week to its "cousins" Nerazzurri, and the Milanese cross-city match number 174 looks like it could be an important word for the future of this championship; the two representatives of the city of Milan, in fact, find themselves occupying the first positions of the ranking after ten years and the simultaneous fluctuating year of Juventus, dominating the last nine championships of Serie A, suggests that it will be one of these two teams to raise the Scudetto cup at the end of the season.
Many are the champions and duels that have trodden the green lawn of the Giuseppe Meazza stadium in the matches played in previous seasons, ending 37 times with a victory for Inter, 33 with a victory for Milan and 27 in a draw, and usually capable of attracting at least eighty thousand people to the stands of the Milanese stadium; Unfortunately, due to the well-known events related to the spread of the covid-19, one of the most awaited derbies of recent years will be played without the presence of the public, which would have enriched even more meaning of the challenge.
I do not want to dwell on this fact, which has already been discussed several times in the past, but I still do not understand how it is possible, in an open stadium with eighty thousand seats, not to be able to guarantee the safe entry of at least one twentieth (about 4000 spectators) of the people normally contained; in any case it will be necessary, I fear for the whole season, to make a virtue of necessity, enjoying the football spectacle from home, perhaps preparing in advance thanks to the review of the most exciting games of the past.

AC Milan v Inter 3-2 (21 February 2004)
AC Milan in the top of the table, in the derby played exactly seventeen years ago, receives Inter on the fifth day of return, for one of the most important challenges of those years. The Rossoneri, coached by Carlo Ancelotti, have been at the top of the table for a few weeks now, beating off competition from Roma and Juventus, and await their city rivals to continue on their road to the Scudetto.
Inter, on the other hand, is going through yet another interlocutory season, but presents itself with a lighter head to the challenge, managing well to take advantage of the initial tension of the Rossoneri: Stankovic and Zanetti gave the Nerazzurri a two-goal lead in the first half, but in the second half, after a colossal chance wasted by Adriano, a goal from Tomasson in the twelfth minute reopened the game, brought to a 2-2 draw by Kakà just a minute later. The Rossoneri part of the stadium exploded and the derby became inflamed: Inter retreated more and more into defence, crushed by the vehemence of the European champions, but the Nerazzurri dam only held until the 86th minute, when it was Seedorf's turn to score the final 3-2 goal.
At the end of the season, Milan celebrated its seventeenth Scudetto, while Inter finished fourth.

The calendar jokes put the two Milanese teams in front of each other already on the second day of the 2009/10 championship; the **Italian champions Inter, who unexpectedly drew their first home match against Bari, do not seem to be scared by the imposing frame of the Rossoneri crowd present at San Siro, nor by the warlike intentions of Milan, victorious in Siena in the match of the first day.
After the crossbar hit by Sneijder in the first minutes of the game, it was Milan who made themselves preferred for most of the first half: Ronaldinho claimed a penalty that seemed evident around the twelfth minute, but the pressure of his team was exhausted just before half an hour, when a nice triangulation with Milito sent Thiago Motta in goal.
Milan gets unbalanced and on a counter-attack Gattuso slightly hinders Maicon in the area with his arm, leading to the 0-2 penalty transformed by Milito; a few minutes later again Gattuso is sent off for a bad entrance on Sneijder and for Milan, hit again at the beginning of the second half by Maicon and Stankovic goals, the match ends worse than we could have imagined.
For Inter the 2009/10 season will be forever remembered as the one of the triplete, while the Rossoneri cousins will get a satisfying third place.
AC Milan's biggest victory
AC Milan v Inter 3-0 (2 April 2011)
After thirty days of the championship, Milan and Inter occupy the first two positions in the table, with the Rossoneri, two points above their city rivals, looking down on everyone.
The leaders have just had to digest the defeat in Palermo and now have to watch out for the comeback of the champions of Italy, who are looking forward to the derby to regain the top of the table; although the psychological pressure is all over their heads, the Rossoneri need just 47 seconds to take the lead, with a goal from Brazilian forward Pato.
The Inter initially proved to be overly affected by the cold goal, but towards half time they recovered and went close to the draw, denied only by a couple of miraculous saves by Abbiati. In the second half the sending off of Chivu, for a last man foul, changed the game and Milan doubled again with Pato in the seventeenth minute, closing the game at the end thanks to a penalty converted by Cassano.
The team coached by Max Allegri will win its eighteenth Scudetto at the end of the year, while for Inter the second place finish will mark the end of the winning cycle started four years earlier.
Inter's biggest victory

In the year of the first Scudetto won by Lazio, the two Milanese teams were relegated to a secondary role in the second half of the season. After winning the first derby 2-1, Inter, whose coach Helenio Herrera had to give up his place on the team bench to Enea Masiero due to a heart problem, immediately attacked the match, taking advantage of the confusion shown by their rivals.
Oriali, an own goal by Sabadini and a goal by Boninsegna, made the score 0-3 after just nine minutes, and the goal by Chiarugi in the twentieth minute only made the score less bitter for Milan, who were hit a fourth time by Mazzola at the end of the first half, and in the second half by a goal by Mariani.
The Rossoneri will finish seventh in the championship, adding the disappointment of the defeat in the Cup Winners' Cup final against Magdeburg, while for Inter the season will end with a fourth place.

Cari amici di Steemit, amanti del calcio italiano,
quando un campionato presenta la sfida tra le prime due squadre della classifica, solitamente si ha la sensazione di trovarsi di fronte ad uno snodo cruciale della stagione, e il derby Milan-Inter, che andrà in scena a San Siro domenica pomeriggio, non sembra fare eccezione a questa regola.
Dopo un girone intero trascorso a guardare tutti dall'alto in basso, il Milan di Pioli ha perso la scorsa settimana la testa della classifica in favore proprio dei "cugini" nerazzurri, e la stracittadina milanese numero 174 ha pertanto tutta l'aria di poter pronunciare una parola importante sul futuro di questo campionato; le due rappresentanti della città di Milano infatti, si trovano ad occupare le prime posizioni della graduatoria dopo dieci anni e la contemporanea annata altalenante della Juventus, dominatrice degli ultimi campionati di Serie A, lascia presagire che sarà proprio una di queste due squadre ad alzare la coppa dello scudetto a fine stagione.
Molti sono i campioni e i duelli che hanno calcato il prato verde dello stadio Giuseppe Meazza nelle sfide giocate nelle precedenti stagioni, terminate 37 volte con una vittoria dell'Inter, 33 con una dal Milan e 27 in pareggio e capaci di solito di richiamare almeno ottantamila persone sulle gradinate dell'impianto meneghino; purtroppo, per le ben note vicende legate alla diffusione del covid-19, proprio uno dei derby più attesi degli ultimi anni si giocherà senza la presenza del pubblico, che avrebbe arricchito ancora di più di significato la sfida.
Non voglio dilungarmi su questo fatto, già affrontato più volte in passato, ma continuo a non capire come sia possibile, in uno stadio aperto da ottantamila posti, non riuscire a garantire l'ingresso in sicurezza di almeno un ventesimo (circa 4000 spettatori) delle persone normalmente contenute; in ogni caso occorrerà, temo ormai per tutta la stagione, fare di necessità virtù, godendo dello spettacolo calcistico da casa, magari preparandosi in anticipo grazie alla rivisitazione delle partite più emozionanti del passato.
La vittoria più bella del Milan
Milan-Inter 3-2 (21 febbraio 2004)
Il Milan capolista, nel derby disputato estattamente diciassette anni fa, riceve l'Inter alla quinta giornata di ritorno, per una delel sfide più importanti di quegli anni. La squadra rossonera, allenata da Carlo Ancelotti, ha da poche settimane raggiunto la vetta della classifica, tenendo a bada la concorrenza di Roma e Juventus e attende i rivali cittadini per proseguire il proprio percorso verso lo scudetto.
L'Inter, dal canto suo, sta attraversando l'ennesima stagione interlocutoria, ma si presenta con la testa più leggera alla sfida, riuscendo bene ad approfittare dell'iniziale tensione dei rossoneri: Stankovic e Zanetti permettono ai nerazzurri di chiudere il primo tempo in vantaggio di due reti, ma nella ripresa, dopo una colossale occasione sprecata da Adriano, un goal di Tomasson al dodicesimo minuto riapre la partita, portata sul 2-2 da Kakà appena un minuto più tardi. La parte rossonera dello stadio esplode e il derby diventa infuocato: l'Inter si ritira sempre di più in difesa, schiacciata dalla veemenza dei campioni d'Europa, ma la diga nerazzurra regge solo fino all'86° minuto, quando tocca a Seedorf realizzare il goal del definitivo 3-2.
A fine stagione il Milan festeggerà la conquista del suo diciassettesimo scudetto, mentre l'Inter chiuderà quarta.
La vittoria più bella dell'Inter
Milan-Inter 0-4 (29 agosto 2009)
Gli scherzi del calendario mettono di fronte le due squadre milanesi già alla seconda giornata del campionato 2009/10; l'Inter campione d'Italia, che ha inaspettatamente pareggiato la gara d'esordio casalinga con il Bari, non sembra spaventata dall'imponente cornice di pubblico di fede rossonera presente a San Siro, nè dai propositi bellicosi del Milan, vittorioso a Siena nella partita della prima giornata.
Dopo la traversa colpita da Sneijder nei primi minuti di gioco, è il Milan a farsi preferire per buona parte del primo tempo: Ronaldinho reclama un rigore apparso piuttosto evidente intorno al dodicesimo minuto, ma la pressione della sua squadra si esaurisce poco prima della mezz'ora, quando una bella triangolazione con Milito manda in goal Thiago Motta.
Il Milan si sbilancia e su azione di contropiede Gattuso ostacola leggermente con un braccio Maicon in area, portando al rigore dello 0-2 trasformato da Milito; pochi minuti dopo lo stesso Gattuso viene espulso per una brutta entrata su Sneijder e per il Milan, colpito ancora ad inizio ripresa dai goal di Maicon e Stankovic, la partita termina peggio di quanto ci si poteva immaginare.
Per l'Inter la stagione 2009/10 sarà per sempre da ricordare come quella del triplete, mentre i cugini rossoneri otterranno un comunque soddisfacente terzo posto finale.
La vittoria più larga del Milan
Milan-Inter 3-0 (2 aprile 2011)
Dopo trenta giornate di campionato, Milan e Inter occupano le prime due posizioni della classifica, con i rossoneri, due punti sopra i rivali cittadini, a guardare tutti dall'alto in basso.
La capolista ha appena dovuto digerire la sconfitta di Palermo e deve ora guardarsi dal prepotente ritorno dei campioni d'Italia, che non aspettano altro che il derby per riprendersi a vetta della classifica; nonostante la pressione psicologica sia tutta sulle loro teste, bastano quarantasette secondi ai rossoneri per portarsi in vantaggio, con il goal del brasiliano Pato.
L'Inter dimostra inizialmente di patire oltremodo il goal a freddo, ma verso metà tempo si riprende e va vicino al pareggio, negato solo da un paio di interventi miracolosi di Abbiati. Nel secondo tempo l'espulsione di Chivu, per fallo da ultimo uomo, cambia la partita e il Milan raddoppia ancora con Pato al diciassettesimo minuto, chiudendo la partita allo scadere grazie ad un rigore trasformato da Cassano.
La squadra allenata da Max Allegri vincerà a fine anno il suo diciottesimo scudetto, mentre per l'Inter il secondo posto finale segnerà la fine del ciclo vincente iniziato quattro anni prima.
La vittoria più larga dell'Inter
Milan-Inter 1-5 (24 marzo 1974)
Nell'anno del primo scudetto vinto dalla Lazio, le due squadre milanesi sono relegate nella seconda parte della stagione ad un ruolo da comprimarie. Dopo aver vinto il derby d'andata per 2-1, l'Inter, il cui allenatore Helenio Herrera ha dovuto cedere il posto in panchina ad Enea Masiero in seguito ad un problema cardiaco, aggredisce subito la gara, approfittando della confusione mostrata dai rivali.
Oriali, l'autorete di Sabadini e il goal di Boninsegna, fissano il risultato sullo 0-3 dopo appena nove minuti, e la rete di Chiarugi al ventesimo riuscirà solo a rendere meno amaro il passivo per il Milan, che verrà trafitto una quarta volta da Mazzola allo scadere del primo tempo, e nella ripresa da un goal di Mariani.
I rossoneri chiuderanno settimi in campionato, aggiungendo anche la delusione della sconfitta nella finale di Coppa delle Coppe contro il Magdeburgo, mentre per l'Inter la stagione si chiuderà con un quarto posto finale.
