As has become customary for a few years now, the month of February coincides with the return of the Champions League, which with the clashes between the sixteen strongest teams in Europe, begins its journey towards the awarding of the most prestigious club trophy in the world.
After last night's victories of Paris Saint Germain, who defeated the derelict Barcelona, and Liverpool, who brilliantly overcame Lipsia in spite of a crisis period in the championship, tonight it's the turn of the first Italian team left in the competition, that is Juventus, who will be hosted by the Portuguese champions Porto.
Tonight's match at the Estadio do Dragao will be the sixth in the history of Porto and Juventus, who first met almost 37 years ago in the 1984 Cup Winners' Cup final. This will be the second time Porto and Juventus have faced each other in a knockout round: so far the two teams have played twice in Italy, twice in the Lusitanian city and once in Switzerland, on the neutral pitch in Basel, with the Bianconeri winning on four occasions and drawing an away match.
After a fortunate period, which saw them collect six wins in a row, the Italian champions have slowed down in the last two matches against Inter and Napoli, which resulted in only a draw and a defeat, but also the Portuguese are not going through an exceptional period of form, and the derby played against Boavista last Saturday resulted in the fourth consecutive draw for the team coached by Sergio Conceição, an old acquaintance of Italian football.
We now look back at all the previous matches between Juventus and Porto** in the hope that tonight's match will be as entertaining as ever.
Porto v Juventus 1-2 (Cup Winners' Cup, final)
Basel, 16 May 1984
After having beaten two representatives of Anglo-Saxon football (Manchester United, Juventus and Aberdeen, Porto) in the semi-finals, the two finalists met in Basel in front of 60,000 spectators to compete for the 1983/84 Cup Winners' Cup.
The Italian team, now in their second European final in two years, were favoured and in the thirteenth minute took the lead thanks to a spectacular solo effort by Vignola who, having received the ball in the three quarters of the field, unleashed a precise left-footer from outside the box that finished behind the goalkeeper.
Porto were stunned by their rivals' aggressive start and risked conceding the second goal several times, but on their first offensive sortie, just before the half-hour mark, they managed to draw level with another shot from outside the box, which bounced off the ground and tricked Tacconi.
The illusion for the Lusitanians was short-lived, however, as twelve minutes later it was again Juventus who scored the final 2-1 thanks to Boniek. Defensively entrenched, the team coached by Giovanni Trapattoni went through the second half unscathed to win the first and only Cup Winners' Cup in their history.

Originally scheduled for September, but postponed for almost a month due to the attacks on the Twin Towers in New York, the first day of the group stage of the 2001/02 Champions League, between Porto and Juventus, unexpectedly ended in a scoreless draw, despite the numerous scoring opportunities the two teams had.
In the first half the hosts, led by Deco, dominated the game, forcing the opponents to defend low in their half of the field: Buffon saved the result with amazing saves at least in a couple of circumstances, while his teammates went to the rest with the box of shots on goal anchored to zero.
In the second half Salas had a golden opportunity to put the visitors ahead from a corner kick, but incredibly missed the winning tap-in from less than a metre from goal, and as the minutes went by the two teams controlled each other and settled for a point each.
Juventus v Porto 3-1 (Champions League, first group stage)
Turin, 23 October 2001
Not even two weeks after the scoreless draw in Portugal, Juventus and Porto meet again in Turin to play the return match, valid for the fifth day of the group stage. The match is very important in a very short classification, with the Bianconeri on 8 points, ahead of the Portuguese, just one point behind, and Celtic Glasgow, on 6 points.
Buffon, perfect in the first leg, conceded an avoidable goal when he was fooled by a rebound from a free kick taken by Deco, but with another free kick just after the half-hour mark Del Piero drew the match even.
The second half opened in the best of ways for the hosts, who immediately found the lead with Montero, who headed the ball beyond the opponent's goalkeeper on a corner kick. Without suffering much, the home team were able to round off the score with Trezeguet, well served by Nedved in the 73rd minute.
Juventus and Porto** finished first and second respectively in the group, but both had to say goodbye to the competition in the next group stage of the round of 16, where they finished last.

After finishing their group in first place, ahead of Spanish club Sevilla, Juventus are drawn to play the round of 16 against Porto, second in Group G behind the increasingly surprising Leicester City.
The big absentee of the match was Leonardo Bonucci, who after a disagreement with coach Massimiliano Allegri was forced by the club to watch his teammates from a stool in the stands as a punishment, but Juventus did not seem to be affected and dominated the match, helped by the numerical superiority following the expulsion of Alex Telles around the half-hour mark.
The Italian champions' siege in the first half, however, only led to a Dybala post and it wasn't until the 72nd minute that the Portuguese side's dam broke down in front of Casillas, when Marko Pjaca hit the winning shot with his right. Two minutes later it was Dani Alves who made it 0-2, allowing the Bianconeri to face the return leg with a healthy dose of confidence.

After the result of the first leg, the Portuguese were called upon to pull off a feat at the Allianz Stadium, dressed in celebration of their favourites' likely quarter-final berth, but the team coached by Nuno Espirito Santo was hardly ever able to cause any trouble for Buffon.

Moreover, on one of the few bianconeri sorties to Casillas's side, Maxi Pereira handily parried a shot from Higuain, resulting in Dybala's penalty and leaving his teammates ten against eleven once again.
Up by three goals and a man, the second half became little more than a training session for Juventus, who chose not to overdo it and reserve their energy for future fixtures. After eliminating Barcelona in the quarter-finals and Monaco in the semifinals, Allegri's team made it to the final of the 2016/17 Champions League, but were beaten by Real Madrid.

Cari amici di Steemit,
come ormai diventata consuetudine da qualche anno, il mese di febbraio coincide con il ritorno della Champions League, che con gli scontri tra le sedici squadre più forti d'Europa, ricomincia il proprio cammino verso l'assegnazione del trofeo per club più ambito del mondo.
Dopo le vittorie di ieri sera del Paris Saint Germain, che ha fatto un sol boccone del derelitto Barcellona, e del Liverpool, capace di superare brillantemente l'ostacolo Lipsia nonostante stia attraversando un periodo di crisi in campionato, questa sera tocca a scendere in campo alla prima delle squadre italiane rimaste in gara, ovvero la Juventus, che sarà ospite dei campioni di Portogallo del Porto.
Quello che andrà in scena allo Estadio do Dragao sarà il sesto confronto della storia tra la squadra di casa e la Juventus, che hanno incrociato per la prima volta i loro destini quasi 37 anni fa, nella finale di Coppa delle Coppe del 1984. Per la seconda volta Porto e Juventus si affrontano all'interno di un round ad eliminazione diretta: fino ad oggi la sfida tra le due squadre si è svolta due volte in Italia, due nella città lusitana ed una in Svizzera, sul campo neutro di Basilea, e il bilancio è nettamente in favore dei bianconeri, capaci di prevalere in ben quattro occasioni oltre ad ottenere un pareggio esterno.
Dopo un periodo fortunato, che l'ha vista raccogliere sei vittorie di fila, la squadra campione d'Italia è andata incontro ad un rallentamento nelle ultime due sfide contro Inter e Napoli, che hanno fruttato solo un pareggio ed una sconfitta, ma anche i portoghesi non stanno attraversando un periodo di forma eccezionale, e il derby disputato con il Boavista sabato scorso ha portato al quarto pareggio consecutivo per la squadra allenata da Sergio Conceição, vecchia conoscenza del calcio italiano.
Riviviamo ora tutti i precedenti tra Juventus e Porto, con la speranza che anche la sfida di questa sera possa far rivivere lo spettacolo solitamente presente nelle sfide tra le due squadre.
Porto-Juventus 1-2 (Coppa delle Coppe, finale)

Giunte all'ultimo atto della competizione dopo aver avuto la meglio in semifinale di due rappresentanti del calcio anglosassone (del Manchester United la Juventus e dell'Aberdeen il Porto), le due finaliste si ritrovano a Basilea di fronte a circa sessantamila spettatori per contendersi l'edizione 1983/84 della Coppa delle Coppe.
La formazione italiana, giunta alla sua seconda finale europea in due anni, gode dei favori del pronostico e al tredicesimo minuto si porta in vantaggio grazie alla spettacolare azione solitaria di Vignola che, ricevuta palla sulla trequarti campo, lascia partire un preciso sinistro da fuori area destinato a terminare alle spalle del portiere.
Il Porto è stordito dall'inizio aggressivo dei rivali e rischia di subire più volte il goal del raddoppio, ma nella prima sortita offensiva, poco prima della mezz'ora, riesce a pareggiare con un altro tiro da fuori area, che rimbalzando a terra inganna Tacconi.
L'illusione per i lusitani dura poco però, perchè dodici minuti più tardi sarà ancora la Juventus a trovare la rete del definitivo 2-1 grazie a Boniek. Arroccata in difesa, la squadra allenata da Giovanni Trapattoni riuscirà così a trascorrere indenne il secondo tempo e a conquistare la prima e unica Coppa delle Coppe della sua storia.

In programma inizialmente a settembre, ma rinviata di quasi un mese per gli attentati alle Torri Gemelle di New York, la partita della prima giornata della fase a gironi della Champions League 2001/02, tra Porto e Juventus, termina inaspettatamente a reti bianche, nonostante le numerose occasioni avute dalle due squadre per segnare.
Nel primo tempo i padroni di casa, trascinati da Deco, dominano la partita costringendo gli avversari a difendere bassi nella loro metà campo: Buffon salva il risultato con parate strepitose almeno in un paio di circostanze, mentre i suoi compagni vanno al riposo con la casella dei tiri in porta ancorata allo zero.
Nella ripresa Salas ha un'occasione d'oro per portare gli ospiti in vantaggio sugli sviluppi di un calcio d'angolo, ma incredibilmente sbaglia il tap-in vincente da meno di un metro dalla porta e così, col passare dei minuti le due squadre si controllano, accontendandosi di un punto a testa.
Juventus-Porto 3-1 (Champions League, prima fase a gironi)

Dopo nemmeno due settimane dal pareggio a reti bianche in terra portoghese, Juventus e Porto si ritrovano a Torino per disputare la partita di ritorno, valevole per la quinta giornata della fase a gironi. La partita è molto importante in virtù di una classifica molto corta, che vede i bianconeri a quota 8 davanti ai portoghesi, distaccati di un solo punto, e al Celtic Glasgow, fermo a 6 punti.
Buffon, perfetto all'andata, subisce un goal evitabile facendosi ingannare da un rimbalzo della palla in seguito ad una punizione battuta da Deco, ma con un altro calcio di punizione, poco dopo la mezz'ora di gioco, Del Piero pareggia per i suoi.
La ripresa si apre nel migliore dei modi per i padroni di casa, che trovano subito il goal del vantaggio con Montero, abile di testa a trafiggere il portiere avversario su azione di calcio d'angolo e che senza subire più di tanto gli avversari saranno capaci di arrotondare il punteggio con Trezeguet, ben servito da Nedved al 73° minuto.
Juventus e Porto chiuderanno rispettivamente prima e seconda nel girone, ma entrambe dovranno salutare la competizione nella fase a gironi successiva degli ottavi di finale, nella quale si classificheranno ultime.

Dopo aver chiuso il proprio girone al primo posto, davanti agli spagnoli del Siviglia, la Juventus viene sorteggiata per giocare gli ottavi di finale contro il Porto, secondo nel gruppo G alle spalle del sempre più sorprendente Leicester City.
Il grande assente della partita è Leonardo Bonucci, che dopo uno screzio con l'allenatore Massimiliano Allegri è costretto per punizione dalla società a guardare i suoi compagni da uno sgabello in tribuna, ma la Juventus non sembra risentirne e domina la partita, facilitata anche dalla superiorità numerica in seguito all'espulsione di Alex Telles intorno alla mezz'ora.
L'assedio dei campioni d'Italia tuttavia nel primo tempo porta solo ad un palo di Dybala e si dovrà attendere il settantaduesimo minuto per veder crollare la diga eretta dai portoghesi davanti a Casillas, quando Marko Pjaca di destro indovinerà il tiro vincente. Due minuti più tardi sarà Dani Alves a fissare il risultato sullo 0-2, cosa che permetterà ai bianconeri di affronatare il ritorno con una buona dose di serenità.

Dopo il risultato dell'andata, i portoghesi sono chiamati ad una vera e propria impresa all'Allianz Stadium, vestito a festa per il probabile approdo ai quarti di finale dei propri beniamini, ma la squadra allenata da Nuno Espirito Santo non riesce praticamente mai a portare grattacapi dalle parti di Buffon.
Per di più, su una delle poche sortite bianconere dalle parti di Casillas, Maxi Pereira para con le mani un tiro a botta sicura di Higuain, procurando il calcio di rigore trasformato da Dybala e lasciando i suoi compagni in dieci contro undici ancora una volta.
Sopra di tre goal e di un uomo, il secondo tempo diventa poco più di un allenamento per la Juventus, che sceglie di non strafare e di riservare le energie per i futuri impegni. La squadra di Allegri, dopo aver eliminato anche Barcellona nei quarti di finale e Monaco in semifinale, giungerà fino all'ultimo atto dell'edizione 2016/17 della Champions League, ma verrà battuta in finale dal Real Madrid.
