For the third consecutive year, in spite of three coaches and three different playing philosophies, Juventus came out of the first round of the Champions League with broken bones, proving that the Cup with the big ears, for one reason or another, seems to continue to be totally incompatible with the DNA of the Piedmontese club.
Let's be clear, triumphing in Europe is a very complicated operation, especially in front of teams with an almost unlimited economic potential; the considerations that would like the Bianconeri to be somehow "forced" to win the Champions League only because of their Italian superiority, without taking into account the actual strength ratios with the main European top clubs, especially when they come, and most of the time it' s so, from those who justify their Italian failures with the excuse of "revenues", always make me smile.
If this is true in Italy, why not in international competitions? Or why not apply these remarks to all the national champions who have not won for years? For example, even to Bate Borisov, which in Belarus has triumphed, if I am not mistaken, for thirteen consecutive seasons, obviously without leaving any trace of its passage in Europe. And again, how is it that Inter, which this year is proving to be the strongest of the Italian teams, came off badly at the group stage, without even having a place in the Europe League?
But since there are two ways to deal with defeats, blaming the referees (whose alleged wrongs are always seen but never their favours), the palaces of power and various conspiracies, or reflecting on one's own mistakes in order to improve, with this post I don't intend to give any justification to the defeat of Juve, who lost in Porto against an inferior team in an inexcusable way.
Having dispelled these fogs of perpetual bellyache, let's get serious and consider some objective elements:
after almost six months, the team, which had started with physiological ups and downs, but with the identity of a clear project, seems to have suddenly burned all the hay that had been put in the farmhouse and that, at worst, could be useful for the next season.
I don't think any Juventus fan (at least among the intelligent ones) would have been shocked by a second or third place in the championship, if accompanied by a success in the Supercup (arrived) or in the Coppa Italia (still possible) and a satisfactory run in the Champions League. The choice of Andrea Pirlo, after all, was conceived with a view to building, after nine years of success, a team with a proactive, bold and at times almost reckless playing philosophy, capable of taking that last step which would lead them to compete in Europe with much better equipped teams.

The new coach has been granted something very rare in the history of Juventus: the possibility to enjoy a year of transition, to be used to cultivate lasting fruits to be harvested in the near future. However, the alarm bells that have been ringing for a couple of weeks (precisely since the second half of the first match of the Coppa Italia against Inter) now seem to be so loud as to force us to plug our ears.
In Portugal, as well as in Naples, the Juve completely failed in their approach to the match, almost as if they were struggling to recognise their own identity, suspended somewhere between the carefree and self-confident one that dominated in Barcelona, with Milan and in the Italian Cup (in the first half) with Inter, and the much more Allegri-style one that was kicked to the curb by Roma.
The organisation of the midfielders appeared more than once improvised, as witnessed by the clumsy collisions of the Bianconeri players among themselves that happened several times during the match, and the fast counter-attacks in the prairies left to the adversaries. Without Arthur, who had finally stepped into the role of playmaker in an appreciable way, and Bonucci, a sort of defensive director, the team has lost any reference in the construction of movement, entrusted to the bad night (unfortunately one of many) of Bentancur, who after three and a half years at Juve has not yet been able to make us understand what is the most congenial role for him.
The coach's faults for this sudden derailment of the train are obvious, but those of the management should not be overlooked either. The fact that it is a period in which there is a shortage of cash to spend, this is obvious at every latitude, but while other clubs have been able, with creativity, to plug the holes in their roster (see Milan with the signing of Mandzukic and Meité), at Juve they have preferred to stay stationary and not try to work for that full-back, that brain and that forward, requested by the fans.
Now Pirlo, if he wants to be confirmed also in the next season, will have to pull the classic rabbit out of the hat, knowing that the bonuses at his disposal are over: with the championship almost lost, failing the return match against Porto would lead to the death in the cradle of his project and therefore, as a humble spectator (and fan) I feel like saying that if you really have to die, you might as well do it with your own ideas.
So let's go back to the original idea, putting aside any talk of victory but simply thinking of building a solid base on which to start again next season. And let's forget, for heaven's sake, giving the exclusive rights to the usual names, even the cloying complaints about the referees heard by the coach in recent outings: losing, after all, is part of sport, being a "loser" is much worse.

Per il terzo anno consecutivo, nonostante tre allenatori e tre filosofie di gioco diverse, la Juve esce con le ossa rotte dall'andata degli ottavi di finale della Champions League, a testimonianza del fatto che la Coppa dalle grandi orecchie, per un motivo o per un altro, pare continuare ad essere totalmente incompatibile con il DNA della società piemontese.
Intendiamoci, trionfare in Europa è esercizio quanto mai complicato, soprattutto al cospetto di squadre con potenziale economico pressochè illimitato; fanno sempre un po' sorridere le considerazioni che vorrebbero i bianconeri "costretti" in qualche modo a vincere la Champions League solo per la loro superiorità italiana, senza tenere conto degli effettivi rapporti di forza con i principali top club europei, soprattutto quando esse provengono, e il più delle volte è così, da coloro i quali giustificano i loro insuccessi italiani con la scusa del "fatturato".
Se questo discorso vale in Italia, perchè non dovrebbe nelle competizioni internazionali? O perchè non applicare queste rimostranze a tutti i campioni nazionali che da anni non vincono? Ad esempio, anche al Bate Borisov, che in Bielorussia ha trionfato, se non erro, per tredici stagioni consecutive, ovviamente senza lasciare traccia del suo passaggio in Europa. E ancora, come mai l'Inter, che quest'anno si sta dimostrando la più forte tra le squadre italiane, è uscita malamente ai gironi, senza avere dalla sua nemmeno il ripescaggio in Europa League?
Ma siccome esistono due modi per affrontare le sconfitte, dando la colpa ad arbitri (dei quali si vedono sempre e solo i presunti torti ma mai i favori), palazzi di potere e complotti vari o riflettendo sui propri errori al fine di migliorare, con questo post non intendo dare giustificazione alcuna alla sconfitta della Juve, che a Porto, contro una squadra di caratura inferiore, ha perso in maniera sciagurata.
Diradate queste nebbie da mal di pancia perenne, torniamo seri e prendiamo in considerazione alcune elementi oggettivi: dopo quasi sei mesi, la squadra, che pure aveva iniziato un percorso tra alti e bassi fisiologici, ma con l'identità di un progetto ben precisa, sembra aver improvvisamente bruciato tutto il fieno che era stato riposto in cascina e che, alla mala parata, poteva tornare utile per la prossima stagione.
Nessuno tra i tifosi bianconeri (almeno tra quelli intelligenti) credo si sarebbe scandalizzato per un secondo o un terzo posto in campionato, se accompagnato magari da un successo in Supercoppa (arrivato) o in Coppa Italia (ancora possibile) e un percorso soddisfacente in Champions League. La scelta di Andrea Pirlo del resto era stata pensata proprio nell'ottica di costruire, dopo nove anni di successi, una squadra dalla filosofia di gioco propositiva, spavalda e a tratti quasi incosciente, capace di compiere quell'ultimo step che la portasse a rivaleggiare anche in Europa con squadre ben più attrezzate.
Al nuovo tecnico bianconero è stata concessa una cosa rarissima nella storia della Juventus: la possibilità di godere di un anno di transizione, da usare per coltivare frutti duraturi da raccogliere in un prossimo futuro. Tuttavia il campanello d'allarme suonato da un paio di settimane (precisamente dal secondo tempo della prima gara di Coppa Italia con l'Inter) sembra ora così forte da costringere a tapparsi le orecchie.
In Portogallo, così come a Napoli, la Juve ha completamente fallito l'approccio alla gara, quasi come se faticasse a riconoscere la propria identità, sospesa a metà tra quella spensierata e gonfia di autostima che ha dominato a Barcellona, con il Milan e in Coppa Italia (nel primo tempo) con l'Inter, e quella molto più allegriana presa a pallate dalla Roma.
L'organizzazione dei centrocampisti è apparsa più volte improvvisata, come testimoniano i goffi scontri dei giocatori bianconeri tra di loro capitati più volte durante la partita, e le ripartenze veloci nelle praterie lasciate agli avversari. Senza Arthur, che finalmente si era calato in maniera apprezzabile nel ruolo di playmaker e Bonucci, una sorta di regista difensivo, la squadra ha perso ogni riferimento nella costruzione della manovra, affidata alla pessima serata (purtroppo una delle tante) di Bentancur, che dopo tre anni e mezzo di Juve non è ancora stato in grado di farci comprendere quale sia il ruolo a lui più congeniale.
Le colpe del tecnico per questo improvviso deragliamento del treno sono evidenti, ma non vanno taciute nemmeno quelle della dirigenza. Che sia un periodo nel quale scarseggino i contanti da spendere, questo è palese ad ogni latitudine, ma mentre altre società sono state capaci, con fantasia, di tappare i buchi nel proprio organico (vedi Milan con l'ingaggio di Mandzukic e Meité), alla Juve hanno preferito restare fermi e non provevdere ad adoperarsi per quel terzino, quel cervello e quella punta, chiesti a gran voce dalla tifoseria.
Ora Pirlo, se vorrà guadagnarsi la conferma anche nella prossima stagione, dovrà per forza di cose tirare fuori il classico coniglio dal cilindro, consapevole che i bonus a sua disposizione sono finiti: con il campionato quasi andato, fallire la gara di ritorno col Porto porterebbe alla morte in culla del suo progetto e pertanto, da umile spettatore (e tifoso) mi sento di dire che se proprio bisogna morire, tanto vale farlo con le proprie idee.
Che si ritorni quindi all'idea originale, mettendo da parte ogni discorso di vittoria ma pensando semplicemente a costruire una base solida su cui ripartire la prossima stagione. E che si lasci perdere, per amor del Cielo, dandone l'esclusiva ai soliti noti, anche le stucchevoli rimostranze sugli arbitri sentite da parte del tecnico nelle ultime uscite: perdere, in fin dei conti, fa parte dello sport, essere "perdenti" è molto peggio.
