Chi sono?

Mi chiamo Franco, classe 1976, sono nato e cresciuto a Torino, ma trasferito "per amore" in provincia di Vercelli, una delle zone più rurali del Piemonte, dove attualmente vivo con mia moglie e i nostri tre figli.
Sono appassionato di sport fin da quando ero bambino, ma contrariamente a quello che si potrebbe pensare è stata mia mamma, ancora più di mio padre, a trasmettermi l'amore per il calcio, attraverso i suoi racconti dei grandi protagonisti del passato.
Se per addormentarsi i miei coetanei si facevano raccontare la favola di Biancaneve e i sette nani o di Cappuccetto rosso, io preferivo la storia dello scudetto del '77, o delle gesta di Omar Sivori e del suo compagno John Charles, l'unico in grado di tenere a bada el cabezon rifilandogli all'occorrenza anche qualche schiaffo per tranquillizzarlo.
Ho scelto da un paio d'anni di lasciare il vecchio lavoro, legato all'editoria, e di riappropriarmi del mio tempo, aprendo una sorta di attività familiare insieme a mia moglie, che fosse incentrata sull'accoglienza turistica, settore considerato in quel momento in forte espansione. Purtroppo con la situazione emergenziale legata al covid-19 anche questo tipo di impresa è stato fortemente colpito, ma se è vero come è vero che in tutte le crisi si nascondono delle opportunità, i pomeriggi trascorsi sul balcone durante il lockdown mi hanno permesso di realizzare un sogno cullato da tempo e di completare la stesura del romanzo.

Qual è l'ambientazione della storia?

La storia si svolge in un futuro prossimo, in un mondo in cui convivere con cicliche pandemie è diventato per buona parte dell'umanità una triste abitudine. La società è fortemente influenzata dalle multinazionali dell'intrattenimento che hanno assunto, in un panorama che vede le persone sempre più costrette a svolgere tutte le attività da casa, un ruolo cruciale.

Il calcio e lo sport risultano a loro volta condizionati da questa situazione, e spesso i campionati sono costretti a proseguire senza pubblico o, nei casi più gravi, a fermarsi definitivamente. I continui stop provocano dei danni economici anche a chi sul calcio ha investito come forma di spettacolo televisivo a pagamento ed è così che nasce l'idea di un torneo pre-registrato, da svolgersi in una remota località segreta, che comprenda tutti i giocatori più forti del mondo e che possa essere vendibile all'occorrenza in sostituzione dei vari campionati.

Quali sono i personaggi principali?

Il narratore della storia è Alex, un uomo di trentacinque anni che racconta uno dei periodi più bui, ma allo stesso tempo più felici della sua vita: quello in cui, da bambino, costretto in casa da un nuovo virus mortale, ha potuto assistere insieme al padre al torneo descritto come l'evento destinato a rimanere nella storia del calcio: il GST, acronimo di Great Secret Tournament, ideato e diretto dall'industriale Marcello Visionario per conto di anonimi finanziatori.

La narrazione degli avvenimenti avrà un'unica regia, identica per le TV di tutto il mondo, ma molti particolari nascosti verranno svelati solo in futuro per opera del giornalista messicano Marcos Acuña, testimone oculare, insieme a centinaia di colleghi, dell'evento.
Molti tra i calciatori descritti, così come diversi giornalisti, sono frutto totale della fantasia (e di un generatore di nomi casuale), ma tra di essi si nasconde qualche Easter egg, qualche personaggio ricavato sulla figura di veri atleti o volti noti dello spettacolo. Anche i nomi delle squadre sono inventati, ma scavando a fondo alcuni potrebbero suonare familiari ai più esperti.

Quali sono i temi trattati?

La vicenda ruota attorno agli avvenimenti calcistici occorsi al torneo, ma oltre alla pura descrizione delle partite e delle gesta atletiche dei protagonisti, numerosi altri temi vengono inseriti nella narrazione che fa da contorno al campo.

Il più presente tra questi è forse quello della lealtà, verso amici, persone amate, colleghi di lavoro, dipendenti, compagni di squadra o avversari, descrivendo anche le conseguenze nefaste che inevitabilmente scaturiscono quando essa viene a mancare, ma l'accento viene posto anche sull'importanza della corretta informazione, indispensabile al fine di costruire una società giusta ed equa.
Grande importanza viene poi data, in un racconto basato anche su esperienze personali, al rapporto che si crea all'interno di una squadra, che in breve tempo, quando amministrata nella maniera più corretta, finisce per creare legami indissolubili di fratellanza e amicizia.

Da dove nasce l'idea?

Numerosi avvenimenti hanno contribuito, oltre alle immancabili esperienze personali, alla creazione della storia.

L'idea del torneo segreto deriva da una vicenda capace di appassionarmi e da un semplice messaggio: mentre stavo cercando informazioni sul Mundial dimenticato infatti, un finto documentario di produzione italo-argentina che narra le vicende di un mai svolto campionato del mondo di calcio del 1942, un amico mi scrive per condividere che anche lui come me, in pieno lockdown si ritrova in crisi di astinenza da calcio, tanto da andare alla ricerca delle vecchie partite proposte alla TV:

Quanto sarebbe bello almeno non conoscere il risultato finale...

Ed ecco la trovata: un campionato inedito, del quale nessuno conosce le vicende, anche se giocato nel passato.
La ricerca di partite inedite inoltre, mi ha spinto ad appassionarmi in quel periodo al campionato bielorusso, l'unico ancora in pieno svolgimento in Europa, e che ha ispirato anche il racconto di alcune vicende descritte nel libro, nonché di qualche ambientazione.

A chi è indirizzato il libro?

Il libro si può definire come un romanzo sportivo, ma non è indirizzato solo agli appassionati del più celebre sport con la palla, poichè le vicende di contorno al torneo rappresentano una vera e propria storia nella storia.

L'assenza di linguaggio scurrile o situazioni particolarmente scabrose ne permettono la lettura anche ad un pubblico pre-adolescenziale.
La lunghezza superiore alle trecento pagine inoltre è indicata a tutti coloro i quali amano immergersi a lungo in una storia, tendendo ad affezionarsi ai personaggi e quasi diventando parte del mondo immaginario rappresentato.

Who I am?

My name is Franco, I was born and raised in Turin, but moved "for love" to the province of Vercelli, one of the most rural areas of Piedmont, where I currently live with my wife and our three children.
I have been passionate about sport since I was a child, but contrary to what you might think it was my mother, even more than my father, who passed on to me the love of football, through her stories of the great protagonists of the past.
While my peers used to fall asleep with a tale of Snow White or Little Red Riding Hood, I preferred the story of the '77 Scudetto, or the exploits of Omar Sivori and his teammate John Charles, the only one able to keep el cabezon at bay, slapping him around when necessary to calm him down.
A couple of years ago I decided to quit my old job in the publishing industry and take back my time, opening a sort of family business with my wife, focusing on tourist hospitality, a sector that is considered to be booming at that moment. Unfortunately, with the emergency situation linked to the covid-19, even this type of business has been severely affected, but if it is true, as it is true, that in all crises there are opportunities hidden, the afternoons spent on the balcony during the lockdown have allowed me to realise a long cherished dream and complete the writing of the novel.

What is the setting of the story?

The story takes place in the near future, in a world where living with cyclical pandemics has become a sad habit for most of humanity. Society is strongly influenced by multinational entertainment corporations, which have taken on a crucial role in a landscape where people are increasingly forced to do all their activities from home.

Football and sport are also affected by this situation, and championships are often forced to continue without an audience or, in the most serious cases, to stop altogether. The constant stoppages also cause economic damage to those who have invested in football as a form of paid TV entertainment, and this is how the idea of a pre-recorded tournament was born, to be held in a remote, secret location, which would include all the world's best players and which could be sold as a replacement for the various championships if necessary.

Who are the main characters?

The narrator of the story is Alex, a thirty-five year old man who recounts one of the darkest, but at the same time happiest periods of his life: the one in which, as a child, confined to his home by a new deadly virus, he was able to attend with his father the tournament described as the event destined to remain in the history of football: the GST, acronym for Great Secret Tournament, conceived and directed by the industrialist Marcello Visionario on behalf of anonymous financiers.

The narration of the events will have a single direction, identical for TVs around the world, but many hidden details will only be revealed in the future by Mexican journalist Marcos Acuña, an eyewitness along with hundreds of colleagues of the event.
Many of the footballers described, as well as several of the journalists, are the total product of imagination (and a random name generator), but among them hides some Easter egg, some characters based on the figure of real athletes or well-known faces from the world of entertainment. The names of the teams are also invented, but if you dig deeper, some of them might sound familiar to experts.

What are the themes covered?

The story revolves around the football events that took place at the tournament, but in addition to the pure description of the games and the athletic feats of the protagonists, many other themes are included in the narrative that surrounds the field.

Perhaps the most important of these is loyalty to friends, loved ones, work colleagues, employees, teammates or adversaries, describing the harmful consequences that inevitably arise when this is lacking, but the emphasis is also placed on the importance of correct information, which is indispensable for building a fair and just society.
Great importance is then given, in a story also based on personal experiences, to the relationship that is created within a team, which in a short time, when administered in the most correct way, ends up creating indissoluble bonds of brotherhood and friendship.

Where did the idea come from?

Numerous events have contributed, in addition to the inevitable personal experiences, to the creation of the story.

The idea of the secret tournament comes from a story that fascinates me and from a simple message: while I was looking for information on the forgotten Mundial, a fake documentary of Italian-Argentinian production that tells the story of a non-existent World Cup in 1942, a friend writes to me to share that he, like me, in full lockdown, finds himself in crisis of abstinence from football, so as to go in search of old matches shown on TV:

How nice it would be to at least not know the final result ...

And here's the idea: an unpublished championship, of which no one knows the story, even if it was played in the past.
The search for new matches also led me to become fascinated at that time with the Belarusian championship, the only one still in full swing in Europe, which also inspired the story of some of the events described in the book, as well as some of the settings.

To whom is the book directed?

The book can be defined as a sports novel, but it is not only intended for fans of the most famous ball sport, as the events surrounding the tournament represent a real story within a story.

The absence of foul language or particularly rough situations means that it can also be read by a pre-adolescent audience.
The length of more than three hundred pages is also suitable for all those who like to immerse themselves in a story for a long time, tending to become attached to the characters and almost becoming part of the imaginary world represented.
