The Odd Pairing Of Frank And Tom Mix

in #history5 years ago (edited)

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

We're in a series about one of the best Texas Rangers to ever wear the badge, the great Frank Hamer, who was brought out of retirement to take down Bonnie and Clyde.

Recap

In the last post Frank and Gladys took the kids and headed for California to stay in her dad's vacation home near Los Angeles. Frank had months of full recovery time ahead of him so the trip wasn't taking him away from work.

While they were visiting a Tom Mix Hollywood movie set they met Tom Mix himself. As soon as he found out that Frank was a bona fide Texas Ranger and Marshal he was super impressed.

And when he found out that Frank was recovering from serious gunshot wounds that he got in a gunfight with desperadoes his ten gallon hat blew off! He was thrilled. lol.

Today's story

Actually, Frank was what Tom had been portraying in his movies, but Frank was the real deal.

Here's Tom Mix in a scene from one of his 291 movies:

Tom took a special liking to him and the family. He took them on tours of the various movie studios and Frank and him became good friends. Very interesting because like Frank and Gladys, Frank and Tom were total opposites in personality.

For instance, Tom was loud, talkative, outgoing, brash and flamboyant. Frank was of course, very quiet, humble and reserved... and serious.

Tom wore those big ten gallon hats, huge chaps, fancy embroidered shirts and fancy cowboy boots. Frank was as simple a dresser as you could find with plain boots, simple cotton shirts and a narrow-brimmed Stetson hat.

Here they are together:

Those guys remained close friends until Tom's death.

Side note:

Tom met an untimely death in 1940. He was driving in Arizona and came upon road barriers because the bridge had been washed out in a flash flood. But he wasn't able to stop in time and the car flipped over in a gully.

But what killed him was an aluminum suitcase in back that shot forward when he slammed on the brakes. It hit him in the back of the head and broke his neck. He was 60 years old.

Can you see Frank play acting like a cowboy?

What's funny is that Tom Mix loved being around Frank and said that he "liked to watch the way Frank walked and talked." He said Frank "had the looks, the bearing, and the athletic ability to be a great cowboy star!" He tried hard to convince Frank to stay in California and become an actor.

Frank just laughed it off. I reckon he had zero interest but wouldn't that have been interesting? But no. He was a Lawman through and through.

Frank was itching to get back in the saddle and he could smell the gunsmoke along the Rio Grand!

Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

PS- Did you guys see where actor Dennis Quaid got engaged? He's 65 and she's 26. She's a student at the the University of Texas in Austin, going for a PHD in accounting.

He broke up with his former girlfriend who is 33. They dated for 2 years. Her name is Santa Auzina. How would you like to have a name like Santa? lol. Here they are below.

I WOULD say SHE can climb down my chimney any time but that might sound classless.

So his new wife(if they get married) is 26. He's been married 5 times and has a son who is 27! lol.

What's interesting is that back in the day when an older man bagged a young woman he got all kinds of praise for it. Like "Way to go dude, you're the MAN!" lol.

But now lots of people are heaping the scorn on Mr. Quaid, so society has changed.

For the better in this regard? Should people just mind their own business?

Howdy shuvo35! Yes, thanks so much for commenting!

Hey, @janton.

re: Tom and Frank

Opposites generally attract. It's all moot now, but it's cool that Frank didn't try to go for a career in Hollywood. Nothing for him to really gain there, except better pay, I suppose, and maybe less physical danger.

re: Quaid

My wife is not quite 6.5 years older than I am, but we were married when I was not quite 23, and she was just going to turn 29. Little bit of difference when one is so much older than the other.

To each their own, though. Not really fair to go after Quaid unless you think the woman is defenseless and can't understand what she's getting into. I mean, as much as he could be called out for dating much younger women, she could be called a gold digger.

I don't know. It's their life, and the rest of us could do well to mind our own business. I don't see either of them being confused for role models. :) Who knows what they actually feel for one another. Maybe we'll find out in a year or two, kind of like Dennis and Santa.

Which, by the way, Santa is the female version of Saint or even Holy in Spanish.

Howdy sir Glen! Yeah you guys have no gap to be considered unusual. I came to the same opinion, let people do what they want. She's old enough to know what she's doing and he's rich enough to go after young women! lol.

In 20 or 25 years he'll be gone and she'll be rich and still young enough to have a good life.

I agree about Frank and acting. He never lied, he didn't like politics and he didn't like anything fake so that never would have worked. Gladys was probably pushing him to try though. lol.

Tom Mix was making $7,500 a week which was obscene for those times as you know.

Work is steady with no major issues?

Hey, @janton.

From what I can tell, I appear to be in good stead at work. It's hard to tell at times, because other than the owner, no one really says anything about how I'm doing unless I bring up something. And that doesn't always seem appropriate, and makes me feel like I seem like I'm worrying over it, which, I'm not really. My main intent is to know what others feel like I need to improve on and then either do it, or somehow show I'm already doing it.

I probably left a coin box open at a new place a couple of weeks ago when I went to collect that sat that way for 10 days or so until a toddler started playing with it. It's not a normal compartment and doesn't lock well. Regardless, I thought I had it locked, because I've been pulling on every door and lock multiple times before I left, but either someone worked it free, which I think is possible, or I didn't quite get it latched properly.

Nothing was said other than the owner reported it and I saw it as an unassigned service call. Since I was back in the area, I went ahead and made sure it was secured.

Howdy sir Glen! That is a pretty strange outfit but good in a way because you are totally on your own! Almost totally, besides going in to get supplies, right? And it sounds like you're doing a great job and maybe the raises will keep coming for awhile!
Your wife is fine with it now? That's the important question. lol.

I am pretty much on my own as far as route work goes. I don't have someone shadowing me that I know of, though I do believe that the general manager and sometimes the owner ends up places that I service. And there are other employees that end up fixing things that I couldn't. I'm not sure how much attention they pay to what's going on, but I believe some may.

I'm not sure if I got a raise for this check or not. I haven't seen my paystub yet, just the net that was direct deposited. I had calculated about $130 less, though, so who knows. My calculations and theirs as far as hours ago, even though we're supposedly going off the same thing, has been off more than not. So I don't know if they're catching up pay that I should have gotten, or what. :)

My wife is okay with me working. Now she wants me to keep doing more housework. :)

So the work isn't getting boring yet? It doesn't sound like it. Your wife wants you to do more housework because you used to do more when you were working at home?

Oh, I don't think so. There's enough variety going on. It can get frustrating, though. I thought I might be past having key problems, but today there were two locks I couldn't get into that I used to be able to open. One was on an empty small toy dispenser. I basically torn the key trying to turn it in the lock. I didn't break it, thank goodness, but it's just dumb, when I've been careful not to tighten the locks too tight, and yet somehow this one won't budge.

Someone likes to stick toothpicks and other stuff in some of these locks and so that also makes it tough to try to get a key in so it can turn the lock.

My wife just wants more and more done. You get done with one thing, there's a million other things behind it. Kind of like an iceberg. :)

Sir glen! Do you try to do more houswork like she wants or do you just don't worry about it?
What happens when you have a lock that's had a toothpick shoved in there and you can't open it?

I would have liked to see Frank in the movies. He had the looks and bearing. It would be more money and a lot easier on his health.

The last time I heard much of Dennis Quaid he was breaking up with Meg Ryan. She was involved with Russell Crowe and that never worked out.

I didn’t know Quaid was married that many times.

Quaid was great playing Jerry Lee Lewis in ‘Great Balls Of Fire.’ Maybe that role rubbed off on him as Lewis first married a cousin who was A teenager.

lol! laughing at the Dennis Quaid comments, maybe so. He's been acting forever, I really like him. Do you think it's no one's business if he marries a much younger woman or do you think it's disgusting?

That would be interesting about Frank if he got into acting, I just don't think he could have put up with all the politics and fakeness!

I figure that woman is old enough to know what she wants. Maybe she figures, It’s better to be an old man’s sweetheart than a young man’s fool.” 😂

lol! I agree, she's plenty old enough and probably pretty dang smart. If they get married I hope they have a good one. And if it doesn't last she'll still be a heck of a lot richer!

Ha! I seriously think that people should mind their own business Sir @janton. My wife is an old soul, yet there are 23 years between us. Heaps of rocks the people have beside them, but as soon as they need our help then it all changes. All of a sudden we become lauded hahaha.
Life sure is strange my friend.
Blessings!

I agree sir papilloncharity, I think it is none of anyone's business. Some of the criticism may come out of jealously!

Only some Sir @janton?
Mainly from the married women, as they fear that their husbands will start looking at younger women hahaha.
Blessings!

Oh that's a good point, I'm sure that's true!

Howdy steem-plus! Thanks so much for the upvote!

Well, opposites do attract, and Frank certainly has a way of finding opposites!

As for Mr. Quaid, it's really no ones business but his and his wife/fiance/girlfriend/etc. If they're happy, good for them! Michael Douglass and Catherine Zeta-Jones have 25 years separating them, and they appear to be pretty happy. Who knows, eh?

I totally agree sir wwwiebe...the Michael Douglas marriage is a good example that it can work. If Dennis gets married to her I wish them the best!

Well yeah, everybody should mind their own business, but not when you are famous, lol.

Anyway, that photo of Frank with Tom is priceless! Tom is definitely a snappy dresser. What the miss match is he wearing anyway. And that hat is just ridicules, lol. I think Frank is dressed way better. Well, he is a lawman not an actor!

haha! Howdy Miss Lena! I expected you to scold me about my Santa comment but I'll try harder next time! I agree, no one's business but when you are a so-called Star, then your life is everyone's business!

You have a problem with the way Tom Mix dressed? lol...I know, it's retarded! But he wanted to get attention. And that photo was taken in Austin, Texas so he didn't need to be showing off to anyone. Texans had to look at him and say what you did. What the miss match is he wearing??!! lol.

Oh yeah! That Santa!!! That was a good one. Sorry I forgot to mentioned. And I wouldn't scold you, I think it was funny, lol. I was just taken by Tom's getup, so I forgot, all about everything else, lol.

His getup WAS pretty outrageous!
Here's another one:

7ftblt4uyk.png

lol! No one else mentioned the Santa comment but I knew you would see it!

Oh boy, what a clown, lol.

Yeah a filthy rich one!

Oh well, rich people often don't have a good sense of style, lol.

That's true and no one says anything because they're rich and powerful but I think Tom Mix liked his style because it made him stand out. When you get to be rich and powerful you are going to be dressing conservatively or to attract attention? lol.

Santa's claws are coming out in a town near you! 😁

lol! Howdy sir wonderwop, good to see you!

Tom Mix made 291 movies and I have never heard of him before. I laughed so hard when you said that Tom's ten gallon hat blew off! LOL! When I read about Tom trying to get Frank into acting, I shook my head and said, "No way! He will be a lawman until his last breath. I love your narration jonboy! : )

Thanks so much for the kind words Butterfly! I think most people just skim or look at the pictures because no one ever mentions the writing. Not that it's good or anything but sometimes I think there is a little humor there. lol.

But yes, Tom Mix was so big. He was making $7,500 a week in 1918! That's like making $127,500 a week today! lol. You're so right about Frank being a lawman.

Your writing is great and I do catch your humor. LOL! I am sure they are reading every single word.
Wow! Tom Mix was a millionaire! That amount of money back then sounds unheard of!

Howdy again Butterfly! Thanks for the encouragement and yes Tom Mix was one of the richest guys in Hollywood. But no one watches old movies so people don't know who he was. Except odd balls like me. lol.

Odd rednecks like you. LOL!

Excuse me?? Hey I resemble that statement! In fact, thank you. lol.
