Historical scandals - With the bread war in Venezuela and the stories about bad Chinese baby milk, history has a lot of food scandals. In the Netherlands, for example, hairs were found in food or other poisonous substances. The biggest historical food scandals cost a lot of people's lives.

Melanin in China

In September 2008, it appeared that at least twenty Chinese dairy companies added melanin to their milk. The milk was mixed with water and due to the addition of melanin, this would not be visible. Ten thousands of babies got sick and six children died that year after consuming the milk. Many countries picked up Chinese products where dairy products were processed from the market.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease

Between 1986 and 2009, 168 people died of "mad cow disease", better known as the Creutzfeldt Jakob or BSE variant. The majority of the victims were British. They died of a brain disease after eating infected beef. Creutzfekdt-Jakob's disease is still present, but the variant caused by contaminated cows has almost disappeared due to stricter nutritional requirements.

Methanol poisoning

There are dozens of scandals mentioning toxic methanol in excessive amounts of alcohol. For example, in 1986 a large wine drama took place in Italy: Veronella wine makers produced wine with methanol, which killed twenty people and became dozens blind. In 2011, no less than 126 people died in methanol poisoning and in 1926 in the Czech Republic. 19. Methanol can be produced as a by-product when alcohol is improperly prepared.

Arsenic in candies

In 1858 Bradford found a big drama place. In candy, arsenic was accidentally processed and sold on the Green Market. The producer wanted to add a cheap sugar variant and accidentally used arsenic. No less than two hundred people were poisoned, about twenty of whom died. The scandal was a reason for the drafting of the Pharmacy Act in 1868, which put an end to "falsifying" ingredients.

Toxic plants

The heliotropium weed has kills in several countries caused by pyrrolizide alkaloids that contaminate wheat. Between 1974 and 1976, no fewer than 1,600 people died from poison damage in poultry by poisoned wheat. Other major outbreaks took place in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. In the last mentioned country, the outbreak occurred in 1992 and the government continues to inform the population about the dangers.
