She watched as the bread truck pulled out and drove down the road. She had stood in line for hours, but there wasn’t enough for her or her two little children. She would try her best to find some plants growing wild on the outskirts of the city, or maybe try to barter with some cleaning.

The temperature was closing on warm, and soon the cold months would be here. She wondered how she and her children would survive that long, and still tried to focus on today. They left the town square empty handed and then walked the streets of the more fortunate.

She could see the houses were vacant during the day, and this always made her weary. Although she would never steal for her supper, there were many who walked these streets who would do more than steal.

Finally, she and her children came to the end of the lane and saw a woman walking with her daughter. The woman stopped for a second and then asked her name.

“My name is Deidra and these are my children, Hannah, and Roy.”

“Well we have more than enough work for you to do. Come with us. There’s no need for you to suffer in silence.”
