5 min Writing Prompt "Squash" #freewrite Serial Story ACT TWO Chapter Twenty Seven
It's the same breakfast he'd been offered at the start of his journey, back at the jet turbine buried in the base of a tree. Only now it is presented on the dock of the river that runs astride his empty kingdom. Turnips, carrots and squash, along with mushrooms and an onion. It is even arranged on the same board of hewn wood.
Why are they helping me? He wonders to himself. Did I not persecute them? For the memories of his Kingship are returning to him. Memories and excuses...
The sail of the vessel flap and twitch in the wind as the boat rises and falls with the waves. This is the only boat docked at this port, because of course it is here just for him.
"Eat, your lordship…" sings the snake, as it makes its way up a rope and onto the deck of the ship. "We have a far journey ahead of us."
He lifts the plate from the dock and faces out across the water. The river winds away into verdant hills and rising mist, offering possibilities of wonder and terror, but most of all, answers. Because it is the answers that are his real food.
This has been the Twenty Seventh Chapter of Act Two for my ongoing #freewrite serial story. With this chapter the Second Act draws to a close. The Third and final act will be posted shortly.
