Prompt of the day “Cloud” - Is In The Cloud Truly What We Think It Is?
As technology advances we find terminology developing to describe the things that we are creating.
“In the cloud“ is a term that should be familiar to anyone using a mobile device. Does it really mean what we think it does? Have we been tricked by use of words that make us think of grand things when really it’s nothing new?
What is the cloud? When you start to think of what being “in the cloud“ could actually mean we are led to thinking of grand things that oversee everything. Almost as if it’s past our comprehension to understand where “in the cloud“ really is. I believe it is a term chosen to entice thoughts of granger when in reality it’s just a name for centralized file hosting on a VPS, storing files making them available from online!
What should “in the cloud“ really mean? Think about the file sharing systems out there that of been impossible to shut down. Everything from peer to peer all the way to IPFS is essentially a real cloud file hosting, if one node hosting your file goes down the file will still be available somewhere “in the cloud”.
“In the cloud” should be used to represent decentralized file hosting and not used for any corporation offering file hosting services that can still suffer the wrath of censorship.
With running our own nodes and hosting others files @DTube is in the cloud!

Yes, it is a quite misleading term. Actually the data is stored in massive industrial scale data centers that create so much heat they need to be located on major water sources for cooling (like nuclear reactors).
George Gilder writes about this in Life After Google.

I did not know that information, I would have imagined they would produce a fair amount of heat but to actually require being by a water source for cooling brings the sustainability into question in the same way as mining centres for electricity.

I never liked the term. When people first started saying it, I thought they were daft. My files aren't in a cloud, or 'the' cloud, they're on some network out of my control. Supposed to be for safe keeping and easy access, but who knows really? I bought a new laptop last month because my old one had an unfortunate accident, they wanted to "gift" me free cloud storage. I don't think so. My files stay with me.
😒😒😒
I completely agree, I much prefer to be in control of my own data!
The idea of easy access storage is nice but why don’t they develop the software for self sustaining and self hosted cloud options? It’s all about the money, some people the easy access storage is needed and many mobile devices it’s also necessary as they have eliminated add on memory cards.

Great use of the prompt! I remember when Apple started pushing the use of the cloud and fearing that my stuff was lost in it and indeed there is a truth.

Thank you kindly, I was fighting with my cloud hosting for several days so it was an obvious choice for me. I completely agree with you I much prefer having my own back up of things I even go to the extent of creating an access point on my home PC so I can get to my files from anywhere!
Now on mobile it whole other story, without cloud It’s nearly impossible to do any video production without having to constantly delete your previous footage.
