The Malaysia Experiment - A Blue Samurai Encounter

Semifinals here we come! We're so pumped up! It's our nation's best showing in the Asian Nations Cup thus far. We are history makers! One game away from the final, with Japan (61st) standing in the way.

This would be our sixth game of the tournament, and we still have one more regardless of the result. It seems like our boys are really worn out, and I don't blame them. The weather here in United Arab Emirates have been punishing. It's no wonder that FIFA has decided to move World Cup 2022 from their neighboring country, Qatar, to Australia.

I really had to choice but to play the tired legs. I did my best to boost their morale, hoping that it'll sustain them throughout our toughest match yet.

Disaster struck early in the game. In the sixth minute, after our boys were seriously outplayed, Kazumasa Doan (AMC) sent a ball into Atsushi Usami (ST). The striker found himself in acres of space and unleashed an unstoppable shot towards goal. Saddam El-Hafedz Shahri stood no chance. I'm wondering how humiliating would this loss would be by the end of the night.

We managed to reach halftime with the score remaining at 0-1. Would we get a chance of sneaking in a goal and steal the game? After all, we just 'threatened' them right before the whistle with Luqman Hussain (AML) sending a long shot high and wide into the stands.

In the end, the Blue Samurai proved to be a too high a hurdle for us. They managed close to 90% of the overall shots (25 to 3)! I'm really proud of my boys though. Muhd Syazwan Ismawi (LB) even won the man of the match award! He assumed his defensives duties and won 100% of his tackles, gaining a game-high rating of 8.0!

In the other semifinal, South Korea (37th) won out so it'll be a mouth-watering encounter as the fierce rivals meet again in the final. The derby between the two East Asian countries is often shortened as nikkansen (Japanese: 日韓戦) or haniljeon (Korean: 한일전/韓日戰).

Despite the defeat, our spirits remain at an all-time high. We knew that we tried our best and there was nothing to be ashamed of. Harimau Malaya made the whole nation proud and we are beginning to put Malaysia on the footballing map.

Now, let's put our attention on the third-place playoff against Uzbekistan (44th).
