TROPICAL TUESDAY: Ciku-Date Smoothie with Cinnamon (Raw+Vegan)

in #food6 years ago (edited)

I recently got asked a very difficult question for a raw foodie like myself - What is your favorite fruit? Obviously I can never decide for one ultimate favorite, but even choosing my current top five can be quite tricky for me, I just love so many of them! This time I can proudly say that I know exactly which one it is right now - Ciku.

Many names, for one amazing piece of fruit

This little brown fruit with a skin similar to a potato is also called sapodilla, sapote or naseberry, but here in Malaysia you find it under the name ciku. It originally comes from Mexico and Central America and is now a common treat in tropical countries especially around Asia. Rough outside, but sweet and tender on the inside - its taste might actually rock your world.

The flavor of the soft flesh reminds me of brown sugar with caramel, it is absolutely delicious!

The right timing - When ciku is ready to shine

Don’t be tempted to cut it open too early though. When the fruit has reached its peak ripeness, it gets really soft and mushy. You will actually be able to smell the candy-like sweetness hidden inside. Then and not any earlier is it ready to present you its best flavors. There are black seeds in the heart of the ciku, that can be easily removed and then you can eat the light brown flesh nicely with a spoon.

You like candy? Then you'll love this smoothie.

For today’s smoothie creation, put the following ingredients into your blender...

  • 3 bananas
  • 3 cikus
  • 2 medjool dates
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

I bet you can imagine how well the caramel-sugar flavor goes with the dates as sweet as candy and the mild spiciness of cinnamon. And how can such a great taste become even better? When you learn about all the benefits for your health and wellbeing that this fruit brings along.

Ciku and the story of your health

Rich in vitamin A and C, anti-inflammatory properties, filled with antioxidants and containing minerals like calcium, phosphorus and iron. I could go on and on, since most fruits tend to have a variety of healthy benefits to show off. Therefore, here comes a small selection of ciku's exciting characteristics:

  • ENERGY: This sugary fruit contains a high amount of glucose and is therefore a great power food to give you instant energy.
  • DIGESTION: With its great levels of dietary fiber it supports a good digestion and if you might be suffering from constipation, ciku is also helping you out with its laxative effects.
  • CALMING: On top, it is popular as natural sedative, so that ciku not only satisfies your cravings for sweets on stressful days, but also calms your nerves and helps to let any stress melt away.

So, you have to keep an eye out for these wonderful fruit and if you can manage to not eat them all up instantly, try my smoothie recipe and let me know your new top five fruits!

Stay tuned for more tropical treats, since this July I will post a new smoothie recipe each Tuesday, creating something special with the tropical fruits I encounter here in Malaysia.

I am familiar with this fascinating fruits, but only from internet. I would love to try it, as it sounds incredibly delicious and so is your smoothie. It actuality looks like a pudding 🍒 🍌🍑🌿🍍🍓🍇

Like a pudding - I can totally relate to that! I think it might be also a great combo to mix bananas, ciku, cacao and vanilla. 🤗 Then you really get this pudding kind of feeling.

That sounds really amazing and I know this is a fruit I could fall in love with.

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU! A WELL-EARNED AWARD!

Thank you!! I feel very blessed to be able to take part in your challenge and even to win the first price makes me super grateful 💚

Well deserved Sweetie 💖😊💖

Energy plus calming, perfect blend. This looks delicious and a nice boost to the day. Now....just to find some ciku :)

Thank you! It was super tasty indeed ☺️ I see you are located in Korea, ever seen ciku there before? I‘ve never been to that area and are totally in the dark about what fruits they have there... 🙈

Haven't seen it before. Perhaps I'll cruise the market and do a local fruit and veggies post in order to shed some light :)

That would be pretty exciting - I'd love to see some popular Korean fruits and veggies 🤗

Oh, my God), it even seems delicious)
I am looking at your photos and lick) this is my new fetish, probably😆

Oh, I can tell you - it is an amazing fruit, I would be surprised if you didn't love it right away 😁 Did you ever see those in your location?

Looking at the photo, I thought from the beginning that this is kiwi) by the way for the ripe kiwi we still have to hunt, as well as for all the most delicious and ripe fruits) one of the most favorite fruits for me is a banana, but only in black dots. It is then that this fruit is the most fragrant, the sweetest and just melts in your mouth) and then you really gorge on mono and feel the bliss)

In my location I have not met, now I have to find)

Yet, it definitely resembles the golden kiwis from the outside, but there is no sour flavor in it at all - all sweet and caramel 😊

So true, bananas must be really ripe before you can enjoy them mono or in any dish - otherwise the sweetness is just not yet present. Where are you living, by the way, Inna?

I was born and live in the capital of Ukraine city of Kiev)

Nice, thank you for the info 😉

the place where you were born has its imprint, but as my guy says: man is not a tree, he has no roots and he can travel) and were you born?)

That's a nice saying and totally relates to me! I am born in Germany and lived there most of my life. Now I am location independent and travel to different countries every few months, settle there for some time and move on again. This freedom feels very good and I hope I can sustain this lifestyle for a few years. ☺️

I grew up in Taiwan (tropical island in Asia) and have never seen or heard of Ciku. Sounds delicious though. I am going back in a couple of months, so I will be sure to visit the market and see if I can find some fresh Ciku.

Look forward to your new smoothie recipe every Tuesday. So jealous of all the fruit you can get in Malaysia.

Really? I thought this would be a thing all over Asia - you have to try it once you are coming to Malaysia, it is so different from what I have tasted in fruits till now.

Thank you, my recipe for next Tuesday is already in the making 💚

Ohh we got so many trees in the garden. Unfortunately, both my hubby and I are not a huge fan. But will try your smoothie as I love anything with cinnamon hehe.

Wow, often surprises me how different taste preferences are - can you specify what you don't like in ciku? Is it too sweet or maybe the texture? 🙈

Now, I do have to visit, then I can help you getting rid of your cikus - I am thinking ciku mono meals, smoothies, nice cream, ciku jam, dessert,... 😄

Too sweet for me... Feel free to come and feast on them hehe

Sounds like wonderland for me 😄

Great post, very informative! I love this fruit. I go to Thailand a lot and there it is called sapodilla or lamut.

Thank you! I also got introduced to it in Thailand as sapodilla - quite difficult to find it in new countries when it is always known under a different name and might come in another size or shape 🙈
