What IS CrossFit?

CrossFit

You may have heard the term thrown around in conversation by some young “fitness freaks” at your gym as they camp out on the bench press station that you're trying to work in on while they swill their pre-workout shake. Or, maybe you've seen videos on social media of CrossFit gym fails (check out the box jump ones for a cringing laugh), and thought to yourself, “that's just stupid!” Or, maybe your niece or son or co-worker has joined a “box”, and they just won't shut-up about it already!

Or, maybe you've never heard of it before. Well, I'd like to shed some light on the subject from the perspective of a 42 year old, mother of two teens, with an imperfect body, and an imperfect diet, dealing with weaknesses and pains that come with aging (on an imperfect diet)--basically someone who is likely similar to you--who has been coaching CrossFit for over five years.

CV-FM-HI

This is not a code to get into the “cult”, as some have fondly referred to it. This is the definition given to CrossFit from CrossFit Headquarters:

CrossFit is constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity.
Source

  • CV = Constantly Varied--means that, for the most part, no two workout days are exactly alike. It's this variety that keeps your body guessing and adapting to the varied stimulus. It also keeps your mind guessing so you don't get bored with the typical “exercise routine”.

  • FM = Functional Movement--this has a couple of meanings. First, functional movements are multi-joint, multi-plane movements. So, instead of an isolation movement like a bicep curl (which has it's purpose, I love me some bicep curls), functional movements require movement at multiple joints and/or planes, such as a squat (movement at ankle, knee, hip). Movement at multiple joints increases the amount of neuro-musclular recruitment, thereby maximizing your adaptation. Functional movements also relate to movements that apply to everyday life (if you plan to use a toilet into old age or get off the floor if you fall, you better maintain the ability to squat). Source

  • HI = High Intensity--and THIS is where the magic happens. Intensity = Power = Work Capacity/Time. The more Work you complete in less Time, the greater your Power and Intensity. The greater your Intensity, the greater your fitness adaptation. High Intensity = Results. Source

The Box

At our gym (a.k.a. “box). We use a less technical explanation: we combine gymnastics (bodyweight movements such as push-ups, pull-ups, air squats, etc), weightlifting (dumbbells, kettlebells, barbells, etc.) and cardio and roll it into a workout that changes every day.

All-Inclusive

EVERYTHING can be scaled and or modified for EVERY fitness level at any age with any, so-called, limitation. There is no-one that cannot do CrossFit, if they so choose. I've witnessed and/or coached adaptive athletes, elderly athletes, kid athletes, athletes with mental impairments; literally, anyone who has a desire to do Crossfit can do CrossFit.

The Benefits

And, the benefits are enormous! CrossFit has been shown to improve all markers of health and fitness as well as improvements in the 10 General Physical Qualities: strength, power, speed, agility, coordination, balance, accuracy, cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular stamina and flexibility. Source. But, from experience, I've watched athletes improve every area of their lives including their relationships, careers, finances, etc. Positive changes in one area cascade into every other area.

Measure The Risks

Any sport or fitness regiment can be dangerous, so always begin by getting clearance from your doctor. Moving your body in space always carries some amount of risk. But, NOT investing in your health and fitness is far riskier when you look at the prevalence of sickness and disease associated with declining fitness.

Just Move

I'm not preaching the “gospel of CrossFit”. I love ALL forms of fitness; if it motivates you to get moving and have fun--do it! My mission is to dispel some of the mystery surrounding CrossFit. What it is. Who does it. It's not crazy when done with proper coaching (I can't stress this enough--find experienced, educated coaches). Listen to your body and communicate with your coaches.

Community

I saved the best for last, because most people won't see this as a benefit until they actually walk through the door of a CrossFit box. However, the Steemit Community may actually “get it” before others would, because you're currently reaping the benefits of it right now--Community!

People come to CrossFit to get “in shape”, but they stay with CrossFit because of the Community. You'll have to trust me on this one, and just go check it out. Find a local box, research it and the coaches, try a month to see if you like the workouts and the vibe of the gym. Then, come back and tell me your experience!

Thanks,
Coach JJ

This sounds like a great workout plan. Do you know how it stacks up to other workouts like the insanity 90 day workout?

I've never actually done the Insanity workouts. I've had a lot of my athletes who have and from what I understand, there are a lot of similarities in the types of movements, such as body weight movement, and in the high intensity aspect.

I think they differ in that P90X tends to be more cardio-intensive while CrossFit incorporates a little heavier weights for strength and power as well as novel movements, such as rope climbs, Olympic lifts, sled pushes, tire flips, etc that you don't have easy access to at home.

You do P90X now? How do you like it? I'm all for it, if it's what motivates you and gets you excited to workout. Thinking about trying a CF box?

Another difference between them is the Community you get by being part of a CF gym. They drive you, encourage you, hold you accountable. And, the coaching is a key difference, having someone correct you if your moving poorly, avoiding injury, and pushing you when you start to "phone it in".

the CV-FM-HI principles are the strongest selling points of Cross Fit Gyms. Your body is constantly being challenged to grow stronger and never used used to a "standard" routine.

Exactly! One of the best things about it, right up there with the competition (even if it's with yourself) and the Community!

I have always been scared of this but I think it looks awesome and I do like watching the contests they have.

I hear that a lot... being scared of it. My goal is to show people there is nothing to be scared of. Nervous, yes, I still get nervous excitement before each workout. But, the exhilaration you feel after. The sense of accomplishment is amazing. I hope you give it a try!

I may in the future. I have some complicated medical stuff that makes a hernia 5 times more likely so have to be very careful.

Ahhhhh, understandable. So, what kind of physical activity do you do? You look like you're pretty fit!

My husband and I train at the gym four to five times a week and we love hiking. Training consists of cardio and weights training.

Thank you for shedding some light on a subject I have basically brushed off in the past because of something my wife's physical therapist said to her: "I love Cross-fit! Not because I do it, but because it brings me so much business!" ... lol

I realise now that it obviously depends on doing ir RIGHT, with an trainer who knows what they're doing.

Yes, I do hear that a lot from physical therapists. What's cool is the owner of our "box"(my boss) is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, so we are adamant about moving with excellence.

But, there are a LOT of boxes that don't provide quality coaching because they are only affiliates and can run their box how they want.

Do your research and you'll be good. Be careful though, cuz you'll fall in love! And, I bet if those PT's were honest, they get more business from runners ;)

lol... I think you're right about the runners, but only because A LOT more people run than do Crossfit ;P ... Yeah, I'll look into it. I'm in serious need of getting into shape... I'm 6"4 and weight only 68 kilos, to give you an idea...

So you need to put on some muscle. Bodybuilding can also be great for that. But, of course, I'm biased to CrossFit. You can put on muscle through the strength programs most gyms offer as part of their 1hr CrossFit class, and then during the workouts, bias toward slightly heavier loads if given an option. And of course, eat enough quality protein, veggies and healthy fats. Keep me updated; If love to watch your progress.

That is, if I even get started, lol. It's terrible... I'm in front of my computer most of the time, AND, I'm vegetarian, hehe. I need to look into buying those protein powders. Veggies are in no short supply, and healthy fats I've got down... I eat lots of avocado, nuts, and linseed with my fruit and granola in the morning. But the exercise... Sigh... lol... I will start eventually!

Great post mate!! gonna save it on bookmarks :3

Thanks! I'm so glad you liked it! I'd love to hear if you give CrossFit a try, send me a message if and when you do :)

Good breakdown of what is Crossfit @coachjj, saying Hi all the way from Crossfit 1722, Malaysia.

Sweet! Did you watch the love announcement of 18.1 of the CrossFit Open?

Ya I did.. Sam Briggs was crushing it.. How would you attack the workout? Push thru T2B and DB then recovery on the rower?

That's a great question. I had to watch it interrupted because I was visiting my brother, so I didn't get to hear all the commentary or even see the results. I'm gonna have to re-watch Nicole's strategies again.

I need to study it before tomorrow because I'm leading heats of it tomorrow night at our gym! Just thinking it through, seems to be grip is the thing to manage. You got any other thoughts after watching it? When are you doing it?
