The end of the road? Or the adventure continues?
...
Involuntarily I took a step towards him but stopped under the intense, angry gaze of the stranger.
I wonder what I could do to cause such a negative my rejection? We did not even know each other before ...
For a while we silently bore each other's eyes, testing for the firmness of character.
It's not for nothing that I was the champion in this jocular competition among my friends on the training base, he could not stand it the first, he looked away and chirped something in a low voice.
I shrugged, turned to Iya and looked at her inquiringly. She tried to explain to me with gestures what this man said.
I thought with longing for how many problems I could avoid if I could use a special translator who was in my backpack.
Not the fact, of course, that the translation would be complete, but in order to start at least somehow understand each other, it would be quite useful.
Pulling myself together, I again tried to establish contact with the person sitting at the table. I gestured to the backpack, then to myself ... He silently followed my actions, but no reaction followed, however, when I again made a move towards my backpack, he, although tense, but did not move and looked already somewhat interested.
Feeling refreshed, I took another step, then the second, then, finally making the courage, slowly, without making any sudden movements, went to the backpack.
All this time the owner of the office just silently watched me, but as soon as I stretched my hand to the backpack, I heard his voice again, sounding with discontented, sharp sounds.
Again I hesitated in my place, trying to remember what our glorious and wise teachers from the Academy had advised us to do in such cases, and could not remember anything. Did I skip once the necessary lessons? Annoyance, and only.
However, it was necessary to do something. It will not last forever. Therefore, breathing deeply out, I quickly snatched a small device from the open backpack and pressed the button. Thank God, he worked! I just as quickly released a small transmitter of sounds and attached it to the earlobe.
At that moment, there was an outraged rumbling, so unlike those melodic sounds, I had heard earlier from other inhabitants of this planet.
But now I could already understand what anger our master is indignant about. No, of course, I had guessed earlier that he was dissatisfied with something, but now I already understood the meaning of what he was saying.
This meant, first of all, that the translator was coping with his task and now I can communicate more or less with my new acquaintances.
As it turned out, this man, his name sounded like Pistras, was someone like a village headman, and he was angry for one simple reason that I broke the peace that was under his care of the territory where I was "lucky" to crash.
I tried to calm him down, saying that in no case did I want to frighten anyone or cause any inconvenience. I just wanted to find a way to send the SOS signal to Earth, and for this, I need to find at the very least some transfer station and some spare parts and materials.
Slightly reassured, Pistrus informed me that I would most likely need to get to the nearby town of Nams, in which, as he heard, there was a structure reminiscent of a tall tower, whose purpose it was unknown to him.
In the same place, in the city, there are many different shops in which local people buy various goods and equipment for their needs.
I asked him and about why it is necessary to travel at night? After all, it is much more interesting in the daytime, and the animals are awake, mainly in the daytime, and not at night.
His answer somewhat puzzled me. It turns out that the inhabitants of the planet are afraid of attacking some monsters. He called them something like orcs or urs.
Unfortunately, there was not even a more or less intelligible description of these creatures - something blurred, moving noiselessly, faster than the wind, leaving nothing alive in its path.
They attack mainly during the day, causing harm not only to people but to livestock. Those who were attacked by these monsters rarely survived, and those who were lucky enough to survive turned into frightened and helpless beings who lost their minds.
To my question about what happened to me, why I passed out that day, and how I was in that hut, the headman explained to me that in the village there is a voluntary squad (just like we did in the last century). She watches the order, catches the violators of the curfew. So I got into troublemakers. This was afterward considered that I am somewhat different from them both in appearance and in the dress.
They took my backpack in the form of a "military" trophy and brought it to the headman's house. And he was racking his brains, but he could not understand what lay in the objects.
In general, it was my turn to tell him my story. He listened attentively, periodically shaking his head in disbelief. It was evident that he was far from all that is connected with the cosmos, and with technology.
Much greater interest was caused by his story about my distant, beloved Earth. Several times Pistus asked me again about where my planet is, what kind of nature it is. Many questions were also about how the population of the Earth lives, what animals live there ...
We talked until the morning. All this time, Iya was in the same room, and whenever I looked at her, I saw with what ecstasy her eyes burned, how eagerly she absorbs everything she hears. For a long time, I have not seen such genuine, sincere interest. We have long been accustomed to various miracles so that we perceive them as a matter of course.
The result of our meeting was an agreement that I will continue my journey the next night, and Iya will remain my guide, who, firstly, knew the way to the city perfectly, and secondly, she had relatives in this city, that the reason to go with me was with her.
Having slept a day, as soon as it began to darken, we set off. Behind my shoulders, I had a backpack with my things, and Iya was carrying food in her backpack. We also had, so-called, weapons against rabid creatures, in case we suddenly forgot ourselves and continue the journey in the morning.
The way was not long, it should take 5-6 days, but the opportunity to wait a day in the lodge was not always.
Well, nothing, God will not give it away, the pig will not eat, I remembered the old saying.
The first couple of days nothing much happened. We went forward sometimes silently, sometimes I asked her about the Earth, at the request of Iya, about how people live there, what they do and what entertainment they have. I also told her a lot about my journey in space, why I was here, and what I really wanted to know about the flora and fauna of her planet. It is a pity that during the day you can not walk here, at night all the animals are asleep and plants cannot be considered.
But Iya said that everything in the city is different than in the village. He is surrounded by a high wall through which orcs cannot penetrate, so people live a normal life.
Yes, there are no representatives of wildlife in either the plant or animal kingdom, but there are beautiful gardens, lovely pets, and some wild animals can be seen in the private zoo of one of the city's respected people, her uncle Isstvill.
On the third day of the journey, we could not find a place to rest and gain strength. I had to try to build a kind of hut. The knowledge and skills of my young guide were already used here. With her help, we quickly found several nearby, young and flexible trees, neatly pulled and tied together their tops, and we got a wonderful hut.
Instead of a bed, we had a green carpet of fragrant grass. Crawled into the hut, hastily snacked and quickly fell asleep. But we did not get enough sleep.
In extreme conditions, I sleep very sensitively, and shortly after we fell asleep, I heard at first some kind of indistinct rumble, rapidly growing so that soon the ground began to sway under me. Iya also felt this, woke up and put her hand in a frightened way.
I tried to find out from her the nature of this growing noise, but there was such horror in her eyes that I realized that these evil monsters had appeared, and we need to lie low and hope for a miracle ...
Which is what we did, spreading down on the grass, squinting our eyes and clutching our ears with our hands.
After a few moments, the sound of something that was stormy, increased to such an extent that we could hardly restrain ourselves from wanting to shove our head deeper. It's a pity there was no sand, otherwise it would be possible to use the way of ostriches ...
It's now I'm talking about that moment, chuckling at myself, but then we were not to laugh. We squeezed even harder into the ground and held our breath.
To our happiness, these monstrosities swept past us, only the branches of our improvised hut rolled like a strong wind. A few more moments, and the noise began to fade away.
After a while we dared to rise and look out.
Very close to the hut was a wide and deep gauge of 15-20 meters in length. The grass cover was completely destroyed, the trees along this track also had a lamentable appearance, in general, everything looked rather gloomy.
Having recovered a little and calmed down, we decided not to stay in this place, but to continue our way further in the hope that the orcs would not return soon, and it was not safe to remain in place.
For some time we went depressed by what had happened, but gradually the good mood returned to us again, and we chatted cheerfully, went a long way, more and more away from the place of our failed "overnight".
Along the way, representatives of the animal world began to come across more and more often, I asked Iya for the names of animals and birds, immediately made notes on my computer. I did not forget to ask my companion and about the strange plants that met on our way.
In general, we completely relaxed and soon forgot about the troubles.
Towards evening we reached the next lodge, in a quick bite and fell off without effort. We woke up only by noon the next day and felt as if broken.
Until the evening it was still far, we decided, after all, not to risk any more and travel at night, especially since the city was not far away, just a couple of transitions.
In the meantime, I decided to systematize my records, and even more in detail to ask Iya about the city, its inhabitants, the order reigning in it.
She tried, as best she could, to satisfy my curiosity, but soon she was bored, and she fell silent.
Then I decided to talk to her on a personal topic, wondering if she had a fiance, to which Iya, embarrassed, replied that she had a boyfriend in his town who waits in the city, and that she might soon be a wedding.
After chatting until the morning, we lay down to sleep and in the evening cheerful, full of strength, moved on.
To be continued.
