The blind date - Chapter 7 - Fiction
Olivia and James had a quick lunch and then went into their separate directions again. The emergency room was not so busy and at six o'clock Olivia headed home. It was a long day and after a twelve hour shift Olivia was tired. She ran a bath and couldn't wait to soak her feet in the hot water. It was so relaxing and she felt much better after the bath.
It was quite chilly so she put on a pair of tracksuit pants and the warmest jersey she could find. She had some frozen leftover soup and warmed herself a bowl, and then made a quick fire in the fireplace. In no time the flat was warming up. Olivia switched on the television and decided to eat right there in front of the television. She grabbed a blanket and made herself all cosy and warm on the couch.
She was just about to take her first bite when her cellphone rang. It was the hospital, and she was on call. She quickly took of her slippers and ran to grab her sneakers. She walked into the hospital ten minutes later. She quickly stitched up the patient and decided to stay a while to finish up some paperwork. She was not in the mood to be at home alone and she preferred being at the hospital when on call. There were two more emergencies and she was glad that she stayed there. She got quite a lot of work done and just after nine o'clock she walked out the door for the second time that night. She considered staying but decided that she would probably get some more sleep if she went home.
Olivia walked over to her car and was just about to unlock the car when someone tapped her on her shoulder. It was James.
"You nearly gave me a heart attack!" She shouted at him.
"I'm sorry I've been calling you since you walked out the door.....perhaps you didn't hear me?"
"Clearly not!" Olivia's heart was still pounding.
"Calm down girl. I did not mean to scare you. Do you want to grab a quick bite to eat?"
Olivia thought about the cold bowl of soup standing in the living room and then nodded. "What do you have in mind?"
"Come on, I'll drive. I know a place where we can get the best burgers ever"
Olivia gave him the car keys and got into the passenger seat. They drove through a scruffy part of town and Olivia felt a bit uneasy but James assured her that it was safe. It made her sad to see all these people living in the streets. She wished that she could help all of them but she knew that it was impossible. For the last three years she helped out at a soup kitchen once a month and sometimes more if time permitted. She also helped out at the free clinic one afternoon per week. Usually on her day off. She felt like it was her way to give back to the community.
James parked in front of a small diner and when they walked inside Olivia felt as if she stepped back into the fifties. James ordered for them and Olivia could not believe the size of the burgers and the fries were delicious. Her ordered her the best milkshake that she has ever tasted and laughed when she said that she wish she could loosen her belt.
Once again they enjoyed each other's company and everything just felt right. Olivia felt secure with James and James told her that he had never been this comfortable with anyone that he had only known for a few weeks. Just after ten thirty her phone rang. James quickly paid the bill and drove her back to the hospital.
While on their way to the hospital, James's phone rang too and they both laughed at the coincidence. Mrs Cole one of his patients went into labor and was already 8 centimeter dilated. He knew that he had to rush and switched on the hazards and stepped on the gas. James parked right in front of the hospital and they both ran inside and went their separate ways. It was clear that neither of them was going to get a good night's sleep.
Olivia walked into a disaster area and sent the nurse to page Doctor Lawrence. Another ambulance came in shortly after with a motorbike accident and she had to declare the patient DOA. It broke her heart when the young patient's parents came in and she had to tell them the news.
It was nearly four o' clock in the morning when she fell down on the couch in her office. At four thirty the nurse came to wake her again for another accident victim. Luckily this one survived and she could transfer him to the ward for emergency surgery. She was in no condition to operate now and Doctor Lawrence was glad to take over.
She saw no reason to go home now, and made herself comfortable on the couch again. It was nearly seven o clock when there was a soft knock on the door. It was James. "It's a boy!" He looked just as tired as she did and after a rough night, both of them just wanted to sleep. She laughed at him and told him that he looked terrible. He thanked her profusely and told her the same. She offered to drop him off as she knew that Sam dropped him off the previous night.
He gladly accepted the offer and on the way to his house he asked her if she wanted to go to a art show that evening.
"I didn't take you for the arty type" Olivia said, but gladly accepted the offer.
"There are many things about me that you don't know." James said. "I'll pick you up at six then we can have a quick dinner before the show." Olivia smiled at him. "Thank you James. I am looking forward to get to know that side of you better."
She dropped him off and drove off with a smile on her face. She really started to like him more and more. The more time they spent together the closer they became and there was absolutely nothing wrong with that. Perhaps she was ready for bit more than a friendship, but only time will tell.
She drove straight home, set her alarm for four o clock, took of her sneakers and climbed into bed. She fell asleep instantly.

I thought you were never going to read my stories again...lol
good post indeed
Wonderful, I like this story. one small fix needed:
They went for a burger about nine after james scared the bajeeves out of her in the parking lot.10:30 her phone rang...Then after the shift finally ended she was driving him home.
but that being said I liked how busy it felt, like in the hospital, (which I hate) How busy everyone was. Very realistic to me.
Thank you I fixed it...I think...lol
I love your story as I enjoy this kind of story very much.
Nice post
