Black Oak Sword, Chapter 17
Upon leaving the meal, the Grand Duke went immediately to his offices. Once there, he summoned Tishtan. While waiting, he read his mail. After several minutes of anxious waiting, Tishtan knocked at his door.
"Come in," called the Grand Duke.
"Sir," said Tishtan.
"Glad you are here. How are things in the King's Own?" asked Agro.
Tishtan smiled thinly. "Absolutely ghastly, sir. If you don't mind me saying, that is."
"I do mind. I mind terribly. Listen, you're job is to get in with them and get in with them good," Agro stared at Tishtan in what he thought was a hard manner. "Do you understand?"
"I do sir," said Tishtan. "Sorry about my comment."
Agro waved it away, as if it was of no consequence. "Here is the plan. The Princess leaves for Rockport the day after tomorrow. I shall leave in the morning. You need to make sure you travel with the Princess. And you need to make sure you get the attack planned. I want the attack to take place midway between here and Rockport." Agro rose and poured two glasses of strong drink. "Is this something you think you can accomplish?" he asked.
Tishtan nodded. "Yes, sir. I have two score men already hired for the deed. I just need to tell them the place and time and they shall launch the assault as directed."
Uncharacteristically, Agro suddenly was concerned for Tishtan. "You shall be alright?" he asked.
Tishtan chuckled. "Yes sir. I shall stop to fix a thrown shoe. I learned today that the guard never allows a stop unless the Royal requests it. Otherwise, they keep moving. If I throw a shoe, they will expect me to catch up. They definitely won't wait."
Agro smiled. "Good. Very good. I should hate to lose a good man like you." He took a deep swallow of his drink. "I shall expect you to stay nearby and ensure the deed is done."
"Absolutely," replied Tishtan.
"Very well then. I shall see you in two days’ time. Come to the castle after it is done," said Agro. He opened the office door and allowed Tishtan to leave.
