Radishes are a white pulp vegetable with a crunchy consistency, its flavor is slightly spicy. Radishes, scientific name Raphanus sativus, are also known as rapanels. The plant is an herbaceous plant belonging to the Cruciferous family of Asia.

Its vegetative cycle is very short, so its small flowers bloom 3 months after sowing. Later they give rise to fruits with a characteristic dark red color. This vegetable has many benefits for the body, so I will mention some:

Thanks to the presence of vitamin B and its tranquilizing properties, radish promotes sleep.

Relaxation of muscles and nervous system:

Radishes help the relaxation, not only of the muscles but also of the nervous system, appeasing the anxiety and favoring the rest. The radish is therefore an antispasmodic and a natural anxiolytic: the advice is to take a teaspoon of radish juice every day in the morning.

Against cancer:

According to several studies, vegetables belonging to the Cruciferous family can help prevent tumors. Research has confirmed that these vegetables contain compounds that, when combined with water, form isothiocyanates. These help the body eliminate carcinogens. The radish root extract contains isothiocyanates capable of causing the death of some types of cancer cells.

Heart health:

Radishes contain anthocyanins, a type of flavonoids with antioxidant properties. Anthocyanins have anti-inflammatory properties that can bring benefits for the health of the heart because they promote the circulation of metabolites, a process that protects the health of the cardiovascular system.

Depurative and diuretic:

The radishes help to purify the blood thanks to the sulfur, which is also useful to balance the PH of the skin, making it brighter and purified from the inside. The diuretic properties of this vegetable increase the production of urine, which brings benefits in case of inflammation of the urinary tract.

Calm cough:

It is recommended in the form of infusions and decoctions to calm the cough, it can be used as a sedative and against respiratory infections. In case of cough or cold you can drink the radish spun. Drinking a glass a day, with the addition of a teaspoon of honey and the juice of half a lemon, also helps to tone the mucous membranes of the lungs and bronchi that operate with asthma.

Diabetes:

According to recent studies, radish root seems to have useful properties in the prevention and fight against type 2 diabetes. These properties seem to be related to its ability to improve the antioxidant defense mechanism. Its regular consumption, according to the study, reduces the absorption of glucose in the intestine and reduces oxidative stress.

Strengthens the immune system:

Radishes contain a good percentage of vitamin C that helps strengthen the immune system but also to absorb iron. This makes them an indicated food also in case of anemia.

Urinary device:

Its diuretic properties increase the production of urine. At the same time, they help to calm the burning sensation during urination and inflammation of the urinary tract.

Benefits for the liver:

Radishes contain fibers and minerals that help drain and detoxify our body, providing benefits especially for the liver and gallbladder, as they stimulate the production of bile. In case of liver problems, it is recommended to take a cup of your radish juice before any meal.

Digestive:

A couple of servings a day of this vegetable provide the correct amount of dietary fiber. Fiber improves intestinal motility and helps prevent constipation. Radish leaves are a good source of fiber to improve digestion.

Jaundice:

They have detoxifying properties that make them useful for the health of the stomach and liver, since they facilitate the elimination of toxins. Its intake facilitates the elimination of bilirubin.

Respiratory problems:

The radish, thanks to its vitamins and disinfectant properties, can be used as a natural aid in the treatment of various diseases such as asthma, lung diseases in general.

Insect bites:

They have anti-itching properties that can be useful in case of insect bites. In the case of bee stings, radish juice can be used to relieve pain.

Antifungal properties:

Radishes are natural antifungal. This vegetable contains a protein that causes the death of the fungus Candida albicans.

Anthelmintic:

It is capable of counteracting several types of worms or helminths, which can infest the organism as parasites.

Benefits for the skin:

Radish contains many nutrients, such as vitamin C, those in group B, zinc, phosphorus and many others. These compounds can help prevent many skin diseases. It has antibacterial properties that can prevent infections and cure dry skin. Vitamin C also stimulates the production of collagen, helping the skin stay toned for longer.

Weightloss:

Radishes have a good amount of dietary fiber and a low glycemic index. They have good satiating properties and, at the same time, a low caloric intake. These properties make them ideal for those who want to lose a few extra kilos.

We consume mainly the raw root, however, it is possible to eat also raw young leaves, adding them to salads or fresh appetizers. In the East, in addition to the leaves and roots, the seeds from which an oil with a spicy flavor is obtained are consumed.

The radish leaves, in addition to the preparation of salads, lend themselves to steam cooking or boiling. The root can be used for the preparation of tortillas or boiled. In the form of decoction or infusion, the radish has therapeutic properties against cough, lung diseases, asthma and bronchitis.

When buying radishes, it is good to consider their size and favor the smallest. The larger ones can be too woody to chew. It is good to pay attention to the state of the leaves, those that are not yet withered indicate the freshness of the product. Radishes can be stored in the refrigerator by wrapping them in a damp cloth placed inside an open bag. In this way, they can be stored for approximately ten days.
