Introduction
My general views on curation rewards (to score highly in League 1) are:
Vote before the big hitters, but not too early!
Voting in the first minute will earn you a curation reward of almost 0.000
Voting between 1 and 29 minutes will earn an increasing % of the curation rewards split, this value peaking at 30 minutes and remaining the same from this point onwards
It is commonly suggested that 15-25 minutes is the 'best' time to vote (especially on known 'power author' posts because they are likely to have more auto-votes coming in at these times - and you want to be ahead of these votes)
Voting on good dtube content and utopian-io approved contributions (prior to the vote by @dtube / @utopian-io ) can earn some very good curation rewards
Voting on @ocd posts is likely to gain good curation rewards as founder @acidyo, and @anomadsoul support these posts after giving time for other accounts to vote - you will be in front of a couple of large votes here!
As you can see, a combination of many variables such as Steem Power, voting strength, voting weight, time of vote, (and more) all play a part in the amount of rewards received.
My general opinion on maximizing engagement (to score highly in League 2) is:
Spread your vote and write lots of engaging comments!
Use your vote on comments to make yourself seen
The data for league 1
The raw data has been collected from SteemSQL - @arcange's MS SQL Server copy of the Steem Blockchain.
The formula used for 'quality of financial curation skill' is:
Curation Rewards DIVIDED BY Steem Power MULTIPLIED BY 1000
This will return the amount of Curation rewards gained per 1000 Steem Power held
The rules (which will cause auto-filtering of your account if not met so just enter anyway and see what happens!) to appear in this league:
No programmed voting! Following a trail is OK, using a script to vote for you is not (but well done if you have done that!)
Must have voted at least once on a piece of content in the past 7 days
Must not have leased or delegated Steem Power in the last 14 days
Must not have Started a Power Down (withdrawal of Steem Power) in the last 15 days
The 2nd and 3rd points above are not bad things, but are required to reduce distortion of the figures.
And, as curation rewards for the past week are actually taken from votes made up to 14 days ago, we need a 15 day window as mentioned above.
Don't let this put you off entering though - you will be automatically be excluded/appear depending on the criteria above.

This the newer league which is not based around rewards and relates to engagement.
Everyone currently on my master list has a chance here - delegation dealings or not.
I've used some metrics (which is the fancy way of saying that made up some numbers) relating to:
- Posts (P)
- Comments - number of (C)
- Comments - replies to replies - depth > 2 (C R) (new this week)
- Comments - length in characters (C L)
- Witness votes (W)
- Upvotes to others (V)
- Upvotes to different authors (U V)
- Self-votes - a small minus score for this one sorry! (S V)

@abh12345 thanks for doing this awesome contest! I like that you changed one of the categories from external comments to >2 layers deep comments. I think it shows that you're willing to follow a conversation. And conversations don't happen a lot on here.
I did have a suggestion for the first league: What if you added an "SP per vote" or "SP per vote per 1000SP" column. Then it would be a quick reference of those who are really utilizing their time well. Because if you give 250 votes it's going to be easier to get curation. I'm not saying to change the method of choosing the winner, just a glance into the numbers behind it all. Or not if it's too difficult/worthless information. Ha ha

As for me, though, I finished way behind the two of you in points, and so was very fortunate that @gillianpearce and @davemccoy were traveling or doing other things. Had this been the previous period, my efforts would have resulted in 7th (only because @abh12345 removes himself from the running).
So, I'm happy to be in the top three, but I'm feeling like I'm going to be lucky to be in the top 10 when everyone else who's normally there returns to form.
Which is really sad, because I felt like I was running all week just to get where I got! I didn't get to spend as much time as I would have liked, but then, I think I still was on more than a lot of you, so I'm just shaking my head, and thinking, "I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy," over and over again.
It's going to bug me though, if I can't find a way to improve even more. :)
I think I got lucky too because of the holiday weekend which made others busy on other things other than steemit.
Well, with the amount of comments you had, I would say it was more than luck. As I said on the other comment, breaking 30,000 points is a pretty big accomplishment. It probably wouldn't take more than a few more words per comment to catch her. :) Or at least, that's my theory. I have no idea how this is being calculated. Asher's formula for the engagement league may be a secret, since it doesn't appear like the one for the curation league does.
I did try to recalculate the scores but I did fail in this. Must be, a great formula that even a smart person like me, can't figure it out :)
Place a witness vote for Asher and you probably can close the gap with the leading lady! Also we must hope for a real sunny summer, that would be our only chance!
If a smart person can't do it, what's the hope for the rest of us? :)

I'm afraid it's summer year round where lynncoyle1 lives, so I think we're seeing what she's capable of even with that sort of distraction. It'll probably end up wrecking the rest of us, though. My wife is already wanting to go do things and in my mind, it's just not warm or sunny enough to do them. Not a fan of traipsing around in the rain and cold and she's from Mexico and lived in Southern California for a long period of time, so she shouldn't be either!

Well, I figure the resteem is there for a reason, so I might as well use it.
There tends to be some important or interesting information floating around and I've learned not to take for granted that everyone sees what I do. That was before I came here, where hardly anyone sees what anyone else does.
I made a concerted effort last week to move up from my 20-something position, and it was still sorely lacking. And I have no idea what to do about moving up in that curation league. I realize there's timing involved and how much rewards are in place and how much I put in it, but i just never see things fast enough and with the engagement league, we're not encouraged to leave large reward amounts. So, I'm trying to strike that balance, but it's going to be tough to be in the top 10 in both.
For timing, I check https://steemstats.com/ before I check my feed.
It shows how many minutes ago the posting was, how many upvotes and where the payout is.
BTW When I just looked at it before doing this comment I saw this post you may be interested in... It's another type comment contest he will announce on Sunday...
The comment challenge looks interesting. I'll need to learn more about it.

Well, we'll see what happens this week. Regardless, you and leeart set an amazing standard for number of comments that I don't think I'm ever going to be able to match (at least not in these initial stages). My net needs to widen, obviously, and that's happened somewhat in the two weeks I've been doing this, so I would expect it to widen even more as I have to go looking for more content to comment on and curate.
It is amazing to me how that ripple just keeps extending outwards. It's slow at first and then seems to grow exponentially. I really try every week to find at least one person completely out of my circles though; that seems to help too.
I can see that.
I think things will only improve as more people get involved. I've been enjoying it, even if I'd rather concentrate on my posts. But I'm buying into the commenting more frequently idea (I was already curating as much as I could). Knowing that members of the league are at least trying to engage is helpful, too, because if they've come across a post I feel I can comment on, then I don't have to necessarily do all that digging on my own. That said, there's plenty of divergent tastes and likes among the members so following them can be hit and miss.
I know, I know. I need to broaden my horizon. There's only so broad it can get and then I'm just a walking trivial pursuits, which some people already think I am. :)

Better 'Trivia' than 'Trivial* I guess, though I'm sure there are plenty of people on here with more stored knowledge than me. I think my brain storage cells have been written over enough over the years that they're starting to lose their ability to retain information. Either that, or they only retain the 'trivial.'

That's why I admire her for that. She puts a lot of effort in everything she does.
I guess I was forcing myself too much to others to hopefully get an interaction. It works to some and I always end up talking more to the same people who I talk to regularly.
That's been my experience so far with interactions here, too. Some people will, others, not so much. I don't see any harm in testing the waters, though. You're still trying to engage, even if people don't have the time or seem to want to engage.

No only does she kick ass on everyone of your metrics, she also is on discord and works like 5 or 6 groups on a regular basis. I know you can't account for that in your league totals, but I do want to tell you to validate your results. You certainly capture with your metrics the essence of what it means to engage.

I don't know that I camped out that much in comparison to some others, but I did my fair share of camping.
Still think Asher needs to charge more rent. I'm hoping everyone competing is rewarding him 100% on his post for his efforts. It doesn't get much more higher quality than this, when you have so many people engaging on a post.
I do need to figure out the best way to locate more content that I feel competent to comment on, though. You guys manage to do it really well, so, I have plenty to keep working on in that regard.

It's a sign we're doing something right I guess :)
I know the feeling I have been so busy these past few weeks and with a lot of events in the office I have been going home dead tired and unable to even reply to comments on my posts! I am behind by 2 days!!!
I'm ending up in the same position where I used to finish races in when I did a lot of running a few years back - floating around the top 10% of places. As I said at the time about the racing results, 'I'll take that'.
Of course I'm cheating a little, as most of this down to steemvoter, especially from the last week when I've had to focus on the revise sociology blog (hit 500K visits last month!!).
Must get back to Steemit blogging at some point, although strangely enough I'm actually really in the mood for writing lots of revision material for my other blog ATM, must be a last minute flourish before I leave or something.
I hear you on finishing. I upped my game by three fold on comments this week and I was still 12,000 points from first place in the engagement league. I have no idea what it's going to take to get higher than what I managed to do in a week where most people either took time off or found better things to do. :)
It is good to get away, though, especially if you find something worthwhile to do. Good luck though with the leagues when you get back.

Thanks @abh12345. This was my second week in the league, and I feel like I accomplished a few things, but still have plenty to work on.
I have to say that I'm happy to go from 26th place last week to 3rd, but man, what a climb!
Thanks to all who took the week off, because otherwise, it wasn't going to happen for me. :) The best I might have done based on the previous week's points was 7th, which I guess is good, too, but still way off the top of the heap.
I'm not sure what I can do to keep up, but we'll see. Obviously, the main purpose of all of this isn't the placing, but the engagement and creating an ever widening circle that encourages even more engagement—but I imagine most of us are here to see how we stack up in the competition, too.
So, trying to strike the balance, and to see how it goes this week.

I totally agree about keeping up with the characters. I'm still feeling it from last week, and so who knows what I'll be like by the time Saturday rolls around.
I think I benefit more from replying to others than they do, so that's been fun.
On a totally different note. I have a question. Have you posted somewhere the math you use for the engagement league? I see it for the curation league. It's obvious that there's at least some division involved since there's decimals instead of just whole numbers.
If you haven't, or don't really want to divulge it out of not wanting to encourage gamesmanship, no worries. I wouldn't want this to turn into basically everything else on Steemit. I'm just trying to set goals and then try to achieve them.
Also, what time (and zone) do you pull your results at? I doubt I'm still up when you do (based on when this post has been showing up each week), but that might help me know what I can expect to see in numbers and what might not show up until the following week.

I'm very surprised and gratified to still be in the top 10, given how little I've been on Steemit this past week. It was starting to feel a bit out of control but I was forced off the computer due to "outside" life requiring attention.
I won't be back home until Wednesday so there's more forced time away this week. I'm hoping that after two weeks, by the time things get back to "normal" I will have settled into a more balanced relationship with Steemit!

As I've been saying in comments elsewhere on this post, you're taking off part of the week helped me, as did some others. So, I'm not sure what I'm going to do to stay in the top 3, especially if you're back at it and @leeart does what they did. You all have just an amazing amount of comments to try to keep up with.
I nearly tripled my comment output from the prior week and still need to at least double that to move up from here, I think.
The length of the comments are just me being me, but finding other places to comment on, that's going to take some doing, while keeping some semblance of quality to them.
And, I would like to keep posting my stuff, too, so I can't be just commenting all the time, as you are well aware since you outpost me, too, every week. :)
I know you have been getting a little down on things here, but you're accomplishing an amazing amount regardless of the returns, and so hopefully you will start seeing the fruit of all your labors sooner than later.
I agree @glenalbrethsen, finding other places to comment on is very time-consuming. I did a lot less of that last week and it seems harder to find new interesting accounts as it seems to get quieter and quieter here with the low price of Steem.
I'll be out a lot of this week too. I'll be travelling all day tomorrow. I'm away today and yesterday and we have the grandchildren on Sunday. 😁
In the end I think it's more important to enjoy what you're doing and be less concerned about the League other wise it becomes a bit addictive. At least, that's what happened to me anyway and that's what I've been stepping back from.
Being away I've taken care of replying to comments first and have only managed to post once a day at most. That's take a bit of deep breathing to be OK with. 😂
The real test for where I am with all this will come when I get home and am on my own again.
I'm feeling better about things having had the break away and gained a bit of perspective.
Also, I've had lots of conversations with people while I've been away, about cryptocurrency and Steemit and that's been really fun. I've been able to get my Steemit fix that way! 😂
You write wonderful comments so keep doing what you're doing and enjoy it. I really appreciate your input and getting to know you better. 😍
I agree. It's not all about the competition of the leagues. I do say, though, it's been nice looking at what's coming out from me, in the way of votes and comments, as opposed to only what's coming into me. I think I could tell you about one or two posts and comments that I'm aware of doing better than normal, but the rest, I'd have to go look up.
Anyway, I hope you continue to have a good time in your traveling and with your family. I have one granddaughter so far, and she's been living with us since August. I should say so have my son and daughter-in-law, too. (They count, right?) It's been really a joy watching her become more aware of her surroundings and interacting with it.
It's amazing how you miss that. Of course, when the child is yours, there's so much more to worry about than when you just get to love them. Makes things soooooooo much easier, that I wish somehow all the worries of keeping a family together, healthy and happy were just taken care of.
But then, we'd miss out on opportunities to grow and become more united through adversities, so I guess that wouldn't be so great. Still, I'm enjoying this chapter of my life a lot more often. :)
It's still early to tell. Lots of things could happen between now until next .

I want to take some time off from steem too but once I log in I enjoy it. It is addicting. Sometimes I just browse through my replies and pick who should I reply to. You lose touch with domeone if you do not reply until you suddenly remember him or her.
Yes. There is definitely a skill to be learned with managing Steemit I think @leeart. I like to keep up with my "regulars" but I haven't been on enough to check out their posts these last few days.
I'm just about managing to keep up with replies, which are my priority, and I've just made my first longer post for about a week! That will be it though as I'm off out again now.
Tomorrow we are going home and will be travelling much of the day. Then I will see what I've learned once I've back in my routine. Hopefully that compulsive feel will be past and I will be able to continue my more balanced approach! 😁
I hope there is a pause here or something lol! It just now that I have been replying to comments quicker than before. It usually takes me a day or more before I can get back to them.

I think it would not be wise to share the exact formula. Looking at the top 10 though it's easier to make a guess at the sort of thing that scores positively - everything bar self-votes!

I was actually trying to make a terrible 1st of April joke. With my mathematical abilities I can easily figure out how to make it to the top of the 2nd list. But it's a bit to much writing on my mobile.
So far I powered everything up. I think this week will be the first time I won't do that as I will buy a steem basic income share.

I was more worried I was going to break me with this engagement and trying to keep up rather than my laptop (though it has been acting a little strange lately). Was it an older Macbook Pro you had, say, circa 2012? If it was, I might have to convince my wife I need a newer one. :)

I've been very happy with it. This one was the first Macbook to come with a solid state drive, so it booted up really fast. Not quite tablet or iphone fast, but much faster than a normal hard drive would. I say booted, because now it's gotten a little slower. I apparently reached the too much junk tipping point. :)
If I do give it up, I'll probably need to come to Mallorca. The ticket and the FedEx shipping fee seem like they'd be close to the same. My wife wants to go to Europe one of these days, anyway. :)
