Please discuss how you found out about Steemit and why you signed up!

in #earthnation7 years ago (edited)

I am very curious as why people always do what they do. That is the real international human language, action. I mentioned in a prior post https://steemit.com/earthnation/@cryptkeeper17/my-steemit-story-how-i-got-here-my-quest-for-the-epic-victory-with-my-fellow-steemians how and why I began, but I would really like to know your stories as they would become very useful to all of us in future campaigns to generate members in the future.

I am also wondering if you have any stories to share about your interactions with others in convincing them they should get a Steemit account, or crypto wallet in general. I have heard some great stories about fellow friends, family started at because of one another, and I have heard about the blank stare stories when telling them about the importance cryptos will play in the present and future of economics. If you have had anyone tell you about joining that would also be of interest as well. Have fun comment, enjoy the stories I am always game for a good story about how we all got started here!

Sort:

When blockchain prices went out of control on dec 8-12, 2017 I knew that it was a sign that cryptocurrency would change the world. One Bitcoin worth $19000 was bound to get the world's attention.

I started doing research an crypto and repeatedly kept finding valuable info on steem though Google searches. I had no idea Steemit was linked to it's own blockchain until my third or forth visit here... lol.

Needless to say, here I am, participating on this currently extremely undervalued open source miracle.

Awesome, @edicted yeah the cypto price jump didn't hurt keeping my attention either. You have a very keen intellect in finding unique upside value and possible utilization ideas and how to implement them in your articles I have been lucky enough to finally start reading. I think the upside value here we are in total agreement. I had wanted my local area chamber of commerce to adopt some type of alt-currency for the longest time, and behold, same as you I just recently found someone has already done the work for me! Thanks for the insight @edicted, I am always glad to hear what you have to say, keep up the great work!

It was a easy decision for me. Reddit turned its back on its ideals and its so obvious the system is being gamed over there.

I got into crypto a few months back and heard about Steemit and though it was pretty sweet. When binance started trading Steem a few weeks back i looked into it a little more and now Im here.

I will say that this community has been super cool and i love the idea of having my own blog that can grow with the project.

Steemit is great, the community is great, and Im super glad Im here.

Yes, I'm curious as to what exactly is goin on/ how reddit is being "gamed.." I came across Reddit a few years back; used it for a while, but never got too too into it. No where near the degree of involvement as I've had with Steemit..

Heres a link to a forbes article on the subject

And here is a guide to fourm spies and shills

http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread1195748/pg1

Both inteteresting reads and good places to start

Wow. Before I even begin.. "forum spies and shills?!" Sounds freakin terrifying lol. Though, as we probably know, "the truth" often is... shiver. Just browsed through the forbes--seems almost obvious, now that it's in my face, that this was/ would be occurring... Very interesting. Though, likely a treacherous rabbit-hole to investigate lol

Im already so deep down the rabbit hole it doesnt matter to me lol

It is terrifying and Ignorance is bliss my friend, but how can we ever better the situation if we refuse to look at the true nature it?

I feel ya ;) and I agree... though the road to "truth" is, in my experience, can be quite lonely... It's an interesting paradox--being "right." By design, if you are "more right" than, let's say, a majority, on some particular issue, say--well, there is going to be precisely that many people (at least) who are going to be, in some sense against your idea--even though it is correct! . (Think something like Galileo here, and the earth/ sun relation.. Shit, there are even folks who I hear are going around attempting to convice people that the theory the earth is flat is a falsity and a "conspiracy" put together by "big science" and "the knowledge-power machine" (I made up that last word lol) to "trick" the masses into believing some kind of "elaborate scientific paradigm" that is, by design "over our heads," and comlicated; so we, the poor lowly peons, will have to "bow" to the "smart people." Something like that lol. (idk maybe this is your belief--i'm always open to new ideas!

Wow that is very interesting @rangerduffy. There are a lot of people on here that are current or former Reddit users. I am the same way, I really like the conversation and the wide array of opinions that you get here. I think's it almost the opposite of places like facebook because, at least in my case I personally know absolutely no one here. I don't even know someone from the same state I live in the US. Facebook is a cluster ----- of like people repeating the same thing to those that agree with everything, this is the opposite of that. Sometimes it's messy but it's amazing how it eventually works itself out.

Couldnt agree with you more iv actually been off facebook for about 6 years. I think i saw the echo chamber coming and I got nyself out of dodge as fast as possible.

Between that and now the fact that facebook is going to use snopes as a fact checking site for its news algorythms, Im pretty glad i got out.

I found it totally randomly. A few months ago I saw steem on coin market cap and looked it up without even knowing what it was.

Thanks for commenting @newcastle! No kidding, that is hilarious! You accidentally totally randomly found steemit. Well your stupid luck is our stupid luck too glad you are here, now we just need about 100,000,0000 more accidents like yours, lol.

Cool question, man.. Lol, funny story: I actually came to Steemit via the somewhat "controversial" figure, you may have heard of him, Trevon James--the youtube "cryptoanalyst," (in)famous for his involvement in the BitConnect scandal... But yes--Mr. James had been "pumpin hard" the Steemit train, and I jumped--one of the things I am glad I did based on James' "non-advice..."

It's been a roller-coaster since I've been here--became caught in the cross-fire of the Haejin/ BernieSanders Gang Wars; had some moderate success posting videos of me playing music; got "into it" with the judges of Steemit's current "openmic" judges over some bs. Met some cool people (the op being one of them :). And am continually amazed at the multitude of ideas and unique experiences and opinions people bring to the platform from all over the world.. (Though, these "interactions" themselves can be somewhat "rocky" at first ;)

As far as my experience with talking to "outsiders" about Steemit--it's been spotty. There's definitely some sort of "psychological bias" involved--can't think of the fancy clinical term atm--but basically, because I am so into steemit, and think it's so great, it's almost unfathomable that others might not share the same opinion--forgetting that they may just simply not have yet been exposed, or maybe they have. Take, my parents, for example--I have told them about steemit, but, heck, they don't even have facebook let alone do I think they're gonna get on here any time soon... (Not that the two are necessarily even that similar--but you hopefully see my point).

I'm not sure why Steemit has yet to become more widely adopted. My theory is, as some others around here postulate, it's still too "techy" and "complicated" to be popularly adopted at this stage in the game. Even though, comparatively speaking, I think Steem is relatively less "complex" than certain other platforms/ conceptualizations within the blockchain space. Even still-- the private and public keys; just simply setting it up can be a bit daunting to the not-so-tech-savvy individual. I think once some of those logistical issues are surmounted, and blockchain as a technology per se has become implemented ubiquitously--which I do believe it will--then more "secondary" usages, like a social networking site, will, by necessity become commonplace. But this likely won't be for a few more years, in my estimation.

That's all I got for now. Signing off... gjones15

Lol, you are like the Forrest Gump of chaos @gjones15! You are there and all kinds of chaotic happens, whether you caused it or not, haha. Great story, and thanks for upstaging my post sir, with a comment that was better and more lengthy than my post.

This comment has been changed. (I think it may be better for me not to "joke around" about this exact thing atm:/

A friend told me about steemit and insisted that I join. I did and I love it.

I post stuff on Facebook and Twitter from Steemit sometimes.

That's great @strypes, the crazy thing here at steemit in my opinion I think a lot of people do not share your experience of having an actual person they know recommend them. A lot of the stories I've heard or seen has been stories of resourcefulness or just outright randomness that they found it. I took a look at your posts and in my opinion they are really good and undervalued/undervoted. Especially the photography. I set up a curation trail that I do virtually all of my voting on steemauto (the name is also cryptkeeper17). All of us that follow it upvote each other's posts, and I am also setting up a "swarm" program on discord for contest entrants. Let me know if you are interested, I am really glad you commented thanks a lot!

Once I get to a point where my vote can be a percentage, I would like to participate in a curation trail. Currently my vote is 100% and I have grow a bit more into a bigger fish before I can participate.

Thank you for your kind comments regarding my Blog. Especially on my photos as my "camera" is a Samsung Galaxy S-3. I hope to get a real camera one day.

That sounds pretty fancy to me. Your answer to the percentage thing I personally have found a way to combat that. The cool thing is you can weight your vote on steemauto within the "fanbase" option. I have become a fan of everyone currently on the curation trail because it is a more tight knit, smaller group of less than 10, so upvoting the people here that post at average of once a day and voting sparingly otherwise allows recharging of vote power to 100% each day. I actually choose the fan option on those that join (which anyone can do) and you auto upvote the person(s) you choose by typing in their user name. You opt the % weight of the vote for their posts, and you use that level of voting power on that vote, it's automatic voting slider. I have considered that as this trail will likely be in the 20's or more fairly soon. Everyone that has joined the curie trail we all vote at 100%. The curie trail only upvotes automatically the posts I upvote, not the comments. Glad to hear from you, keep up the great work @strypes!

I tried to get that slider and learned that you have to have like 500 steempower or something. I only have half that much. I am still plankton.

I really need to chat with you here on discord or something. This may or may not be perfect for you, but otherwise there is a project I am putting together with the emphasis on the photographers on steemit that could work out great for you, if nothing else get you a few ideas that could greatly improve your standing here on steemit as a whole. If you are interested feel free to get back to me on discord, my username is cryptkeeper17, just like my steemit user name. Being a Hawkeye it's great to see someone from the "neighborhood" doing such great things! Keep up the great art work here on steemit @strypes!

@cryptkeeper17 I have to work tomorrow but I am heading over to discord now for a few to see if I can find you.

I tried to friend you in discord but it said I needed your four digit discord tag.

I am on several discord channels. PAl, Qurator, Photography, minnow university, minnow support etc..

I had a friend of mine on Facebook who would share his Steemit info on there. That's what initially drew my attention into crypto. I saw an investment opportunity and immediately began to study and trade. A bit after I asked him about Steemit and was advised to join because I could make money with my music works. Initially I joined Steemit to utilize it for my music and related works. It wasn't until being properly introduced to the platform that I saw it as more than a way to capitalize on my creativity. Once I had discovered the sense of community I was more inclined to commit to using the platform. After a while, things became stagnant and I ended up stuck in the minnow mentality. What really drove my decision to use Steemit the way I am now was the sense of compassion and encouragement that I was shown by some fellow members. Their random acts of kindness and appreciation for my workmanship is what prompted me to use Steemit to not only it's full potential, but my own.

I'm not gonna lie. I initially came for the money. I inevitably stayed for the community.

I love the last line @terminallyill I had the exact same mindset when I started. The irony is when I started on here I was so worked up in building myself up, I was obsessed. Very little happened the first few weeks, so I thought "what would shock me in an act of kindness" in helping me grow on here. So I started doing that for others on here as much as I could, spent a ton of time understanding as much about this I could, and then I started growing. So basically I stopped caring about myself and started taking ownership in developing others as much as possible, and then growth began to happen. You on a heck of a good start, keep the momentum up with what you are doing and you will be surprised where you are in a relatively short amount of time.
