Greenhouse plans 2019 - Part 3
Well it's been over a week since the last update, so i think it's about time i post where its at. I can see the finish line rapidly approaching on the design aspect of this project as i only have a few albeit complicated bits left to plan for

Left to do
Design the door- Improve the structure around the roof to make it stronger
- Work in a load of vents
Plan how the door end will be glazed- design the interior for maximum space

Finish the cladding
I’m sure you’d agree that its starting to look like a finished product and this is really starting to help assess how i can go about implementing this build, both from a budget perspective and logistical
The door
Will I’ve done the bulk of the door the only thing left to do is to sort the glazing in it, problem is the doors width is more than the standard polycarb twinwall width (i could buy a custom sized bit but that'll cost more, i'm thinking of adding in a large opening vent or louvres or worst case just turn the polycarb sheet 90 degrees (i want to avoid this as my OCD will freak)
The roof
I'm not sure how to approach this to be honest, how strong does it need to be? The roofing sheet is light as its plastic, it doesn't need to hold body weight etc.
The back and two sides will be very strong due to the design used, so im hoping a minimal structure for the roof is needed to keep the cost down, i will try to design it in a way that can be reinforced if needed, retrospectively with minimal effort/cost
Ventilation
This is a big ole one as if i stuff this up either to little or two much it could have a negative impact on the output.
Granted it's far better to have too much ventilation, but from a building/budget point of view i want to get it right.
So this is the next big focus…

So, once you're done, you may want to consider putting the plans and BOM on https://homesteaderscoop.com. That's an amazing design, and I bet it would be wildly popular with a lot of people.
That was some of the thinking behind it to be honest Nate, to try and have a usefull resource that i could possibly earn some money from. Depending on how it comes out ill bear that in mind 🙂

It'll pay itself off eventually. Expensive greenhouse becomes free greenhouse becomes greenhouse that pays itself off in more ways than an extended growing season.

Nice design!
We have been talking about greenhouse ideas for our place, as well. My feeling is that you do not see much snow in Northumberland like, here, in Nova Scotia. My guess is that England will begin to see harsher winters with the advance of climate change. It may not take much wet, heavy, snow to do a number on the plastic roofing of the design, with water weighing in at 1 gram per cubic centimeter.
The structure looks long lasting enough (is that a cement footing?) that such factors might be considered.

Haha yeah we get snow but nothing like Nova Scotia a couple feet max, the roof is the weak point currently but its on the todo list to make stronger, trying to find a way to make it clear to transmit light but hold a load is proving interesting....
The greenhouse will be on a concrete foundation thats already in place, but is only a little bigger that the breeze block wall, not a giant slab like the model makes it look like (hope that makes sense)

This is a really sweet design! I like your slanted windows for maximal solar gain. The vent in the door is a good idea to let excess heat escape. In fact, I would put some of those above the windows too, or into the roof. How about those water tanks? Do you want to use them for thermal mass as well? Just being exposed to the winter sun would warm them up to raise the inside temperature of the greenhouse.
But please don't let my sudden brainstorm distract you from your plans. I'm excited to see the development of this awesome project. Oh, btw, I love your cad renditions. It makes it all so easy to visualize.
Hey thanks for the kind words, both your ideas on the vents are great and ill try and work them in once i get to that stage, yeah the water butts are for added thermal mass so im interested to see how it works out once in place, i have the same setup in the current greenhouse and it makes a slight difference but its not insulated currently .

Wow! Those are some plans for sure. Glad you've started what you've got started and I wish you success on what you've still for to design. Personally I just wing some of my projects... but it's only because I've done things like what you've shown above.

Thanks, i normally wing projects to be honest and enjoy that freedom, this is going to be a fairly large expense so i want to understand exactly what itll cost and what i need, hopefully i can pass the information onto the community once its complete in some way that others will find it usefull. Your roof needs to sustain whatever rain, wind, and snow loads you may encounter in your region. With your massive glazed wall facing south, the roof probably won't need any glazing at all, and may be better served by a more standard construction. And you'll need some kind of beefy ridge beam to support the load at the top of the windows. If you'd like, I could fire up AutoCAD and sketch some section drawings for you. I may be a librarian now, but I have a background in architectural drafting, and I know just enough engineering to be dangerous.

I would suggest envisioning the structure as a box with a shed roof, and immediately behind the windowed wall would be a beam supported by sturdy posts on good footings. The windowed wall, while standing on the foundation of your in-ground greenhouse perimeter, shouldn't be designed as a primary load-bearing element of the design. Otherwise, you're adding all kinds of nasty geometric force vector complications. The way it's designed now, the door is just to the side of where your end post would be anyway, and you'd just need to plan for adding a couple more in the middle. They probably wouldn't even impede your work flow inside.
Thanks ive done as you mentioned i think, increased the size of the leading beam and supported seperate from the front glazed wall. Im sure its over kill for the weight of the front wall/roof glazing materials but id rather not risk it for the little extra itll cost and should be able to recoup that elsewhere
