Sept. 14 -- Steemit Ramble -- Notes on My Favourite ReadssteemCreated with Sketch.

in #curation8 years ago

Yesterday would have been one of my grandmother’s birthday. I’ve kind of lost track but I think she would have been about 117 if she was still with us. She was a grandlady. Quiet, observant and at times full of mischief.

Grandma's Larceny

I still laugh about the day my mother asked me to accompany grandma through a plant nursery. We strolled through and she stopped and looked at a variety of plants. She always loved plants and flowers so that didn’t surprise me. When we got back to the car and I opened the door for her, she pull a handful of clippings from her pocket and asked me to look after them.

“Grandma! How did you get them?” I asked

“They fell off the plant.” she replied, with a twinkle in her eye.

For some reason, I learned to never judge a book by the cover with her. Sweet little old lady nipping clippings from a nursery. Who would have thought it?

Onward to Day 12

I currently have about 45 posts open in my browser. My internet is still doing some cutting in and out. Could be an interesting day.

The Sweet Payoff: Big Sugar's Lies and Cardiovascular Disease

@reneenouveau writes about how the sugar industry managed to manipulate the medical information about the effects of sugar by getting scientists to blame saturated fats for heart disease. Meanwhile the sugar content in our diets has been rising exponentially. It’s only just in the last few years that the hard data is emerging that some natural fats are in fact healthy and sugar is not. For many people the mantra of no fat holds considerable sway and telling them about the new findings falls on deaf ears.

How Much Do You Earn Online?! - A Common Question That Never Should Be Answered!

@hitmeasap posts about that age old question from newbies of “how much do you make online?”. Too many take to heart the sales copy of marketers and think they have found the latest and the greatest method to make thousands of dollars with no or little work.

The truth is, that isn’t how online success is created. It’s created a lot like offline success. Brick by brick and step by step until the income starts to roll.

How to Write a Post on Steemit: Tips for beginners

@tanata has written a well laid out post on how to write a post on Steemit. Her instructions actually work for writing content anywhere. Concise and to the point.

Steemit & The Future of Book Publishing

@jamielefay posts about the status of the publishing industry today and the rise of the indie publisher. The trend gives Amazon a commanding majority of the books published, especially electronically. She asks if Steemit could be the vehicle to disrupt that monopoly.

I don’t think that Steemit could disrupt the book industry in regards to people downloading and reading a book. It could be a great tool for authors to publish serial parts of a book as some are doing on here now. It could also be a great took for new authors to introduce people to their writing and then promote their books published on some of the smaller indie publishers to compete with Amazon.

Dealing With People Who You Don't Agree With

@doitvoluntarily writes about the challenge of getting along with people that we don’t agree with. It can be difficult sometimes to find enough middle ground between the opinions of others and yourself to respect each others opinions yet still hold your own. Politics can be a real hot-button item and many people feel strongly about their own positions on issues.

Not getting the chance to say Goodbye

@karenb54 writes about being estranged from her mother for several years before she dies and learning that in the end her mother didn’t want her family around her. Family estrangements are difficult to fathom at the best of times. I have a brother who went out of his way after our parents died to part company with his sisters.

A couple of years ago an event was on at the branch that I knew he would be attending so I made a point of being around that day. I thought that if some eye-contact could occur and he received at least a pleasant nod or hello it might help to close the gap even a bit. He did enter the room I was in and went out of his way to make sure that he didn’t look. His children all greeted me and visited with me. Sometimes family members just make their choices and there is nothing you can do.

Learn the Secrets of How @SirWinchester Got 12,000 Steem Power and You Can Too

One of the things I really like about doing these rambles is it gives me an opportunity to come across people I’ve not yet followed and decide to follow them. I know, I could do that anyways, but sometimes I get to give a shoutout to those people via the ramble.

This is the first I’ve come across @dolphindigest and I like what he’s doing. Very interesting interview with @SirWinchester with many excellent tips on how to grow on Steemit.

Learn the Secrets of How @Liberosist Got 15,000 Steem Power and You Can Too

Well this is a first. Having two posts of one writer being a favourite for a day. @dolphindigest has also written about @Liberosist, another dolphin I’ve noticed and followed. This one caught my interest as well.

Streemian.com

Thanks to the kindness of @ausbitbank I have been able to sign up for Streemian which is in closed beta. I’m able to choose up to five curators and add my voting power to them even when I’m not available. Not sure how that will work out, but don’t know until you try.

I have some invite codes available if anyone would like one. Message me on Steemit Chat or click through to the subscriber page on my other blog and leave me a note on my contact page. It did take a few days before I received a confirmation email but it did eventually come through.

Subscribing to My Posts

In addition to following me on Steemit, which I really appreciate. If you want to be sure to know about every post, you can subscribe at my other blog. I’ll send you an email when I post.

[ THE OTHER ADDICTION ] -- "Caffeine Madness" and What They Don't Want You To Know!

@streetstyle writes about his coffee drinking habits and how addicting it is for him. I know some people are very sensitive to coffee, some it doesn’t seem to bother. I drink at least 4 cups every morning and then am unlikely to touch it the rest of the day unless I happen to be around a Timmies. Oh, for the non-Canadians, Timmies means Tim Hortons a national coffee chain started by a NHL player by the same name.

The Art of Maintaining Reputation: Plan Your Battles and Don't Milk It!

@kevinwong writes an excellent piece about building and keeping a reputation on Steemit. Once built, you can lose it if you appear to be milking your success, so you need to be careful not to milk it.

Wrapping up Day 12

Well that is day 12 of my challenge. As usual I had fun but, for some reason, today there seemed to be several posts that not only didn’t make my favourites read list but I didn’t feel inclined to upvote them. The writing just wasn’t there. I guess there will be days like that.

Charles Rutherford Film

Earlier today, I had to attend a meeting at the branch to allow a cinematographer do some preliminary setup to film a short film about Capt. Charles S. Rutherford who our branch is named after. In one of my first posts on Steemit, I wrote about Charlie. It was titled, A Masterly Bluff From A Most Unassuming Person

Thank you for providing good writing and helping to promote us minnows. I signed up at your website and look forward to future correspondence.

I started learning Python tonight, hope I'm not too old to learn it all. lol. Upvoted and following!
Here's my post on Python Programming:
https://steemit.com/python/@tee-em/python-programming-for-dummies-lesson-1-i-know-nothing-and-i-wrote-my-first-line-of-code
Perhaps after a few lessons, I'll be on your minnow's choice list.
I figure if cryptos and decentralization is the future, knowing coding may be as common as knowing a second language.

Thank you @tee-em... you're never too old to learn anything in my opinion. I've read that coding is going to be pretty necessary for kids to learn going forward so it sounds like you are right about the second language. I'm just wrapping my head around the whole cryptocurrency area LOL

Yeah, I've gotten my daughter into computers and minecraft at a young age. I hope for that to be an impetus to get her into the programming world.

she may just want to follow dad into coding :)

Hope so. I am trying to let her make her own decisions while guiding them with deferred incentive

Thank you very much for the post published a valuable information Thank you

@shadowspub You caught some amazing titles and posts there. Most if not all caught my attention, and will now have to read them later. I am off to see my kiddos for a bit, then off to work, but I will keep this page open for later. Thanks for the support, much appreciated.
