Feb 23 -- Steemit Ramble #76 -- Don't You Hate Missing Good Posts?

in #curation7 years ago

Meetings today, one this morning, another this afternoon. That’s what I get for volunteering my time. This morning the meeting was the committee for the local Canada 150 celebration. This planning has been going on for a year and we still have a lot to do. Most of the events will take place over the weekend of August 4th to 6th.

This evening’s meeting is for the annual Apple Blossom Tyme Festival the last weekend in May. That would be the Memorial Day weekend for American readers. I represent the Legion on both of those committees. I don’t actually live in the township. I’m literally across the road from it.

It takes up a lot of my time but it’s good to see community events coming together.

Onward to today’s rambling

News - Religion curation channel on SteemTrail

Religion can be a hot-button topic for many people. It seems that @lastminuteman has put some serious thought into how to approach a Steemtrail on the topic of religion and has come up with a good approach. Discussion, not debate and proselytizing. I hope to see some interesting posts in this area.

Most Damaging Excuses that Prevent Us from Succeeding

How often have you been your own biggest obstacle to moving forward in your life? We come up with all kinds of excuses for not moving. It’s safe sitting where you are instead of pushing up and forward. @alcibiades writes about the various excuses we come up with to justify not moving or stopping moving.

One of the greatest challenges I have at the branch is breaking past the wall of ‘we tried that and it didn’t work’ instead of looking at how to improve on what was done, there is a strong tendency to just avoid trying again.

Insults - Wounds That Can Leave Serious Consequences: How to Ignore

How often do you end up on the receiving end of nasty comments? Some of them can be devastating no matter how thick skinned you try to be.

Had a guy at the branch who, when he first came around, would come out with one-liners about people. At first we’d all laugh. He’d literally would have us in stitches. After a while though, some of us started to realize. He wasn’t just being funny, he was being very cutting and disrespectful to his targets. The guy was a toxic person and the more he drank the worst he got. He came at me in a meeting one night (verbally) and I stopped him in his tracks. You don’t disrespect the chair of the meeting. He was so angry, he’s not been back. No one is lamenting his absence much.

@techticbronze writes a good post about what can be the outcome of insults. I really like the sketches he put with the post. Speaks volumes.

My Cat is too lazy to be a Cat Porn Star

I have said this before, and I’ll say it again, I’m a sucker for cats. Having said that, this post is a great story about a cat. @arthuradamson does make one basic mistake here, he refers to himself as the cat’s owner. Any cat person knows that we are their staff, not their owner. Anyways, @arthuradamson tells the story of trying to negotiate an arrangement with the cat Nino to produce some cat porn. Well written story and super sketches to match. BTW @arthuradamson, I was shocked that Nino actually made himself some food, my two would just demand that I get to work.

Stay away from the MSG monosodium glutamate, as much as you can !

I tend to try to avoid processed foods but, there are times that a bag of chips just seems the snack to hit the spot. There are two guaranteed ways I can get myself a nasty headache, eating an excess of either sugar or items like chips. It’s pretty clear to me, that it is the additives in chips that create the problem. @olisan has written a good post on the dangers of MSG. Many people have a very high sensitivity to it.

Does "Doing Your Best" REALLY Matter?

We can take a couple of approaches to life in my opinion. We can give minimal effort to tasks we undertake and get minimal results. This usually ends up resulting in poor self-esteem and general sense of failure. Or, we can try our best and know that even when something doesn’t come out the way we wanted, we made the effort to get there. @denmarkguy writes about the question of whether trying your best matters. Interesting post.

Who Produced the World's First Cartoon?

There is a video in this post, but it’s only just over a minute and so worth watching. The world’s first cartoon wasn’t produced by who you might first thing it was.

Late Saturday Morning at the Historic Kensington Train Station and Farmer's Market

When I saw the headline on this post I immediately thought it was about Toronto, Ontario where there is also a Kensington Market. I was surprised to learn there is another in Maryland and the photos are really worth having a look at.

Wrap-up on Day #76

Another interesting day around Steemit. The last meeting I had at the branch today seemed to drag on forever. Likely because I really wanted to get home and finish off today’s Ramble rather than sitting there. But I hung in cause I knew the Ramble would be patiently waiting for me when I got home.
