Who Produced the World's First Cartoon?
My kids asked me who invented cartoons? I told them I'm sure it was Walt Disney. So I looked it up and I was very surprised to find out that it was not Walt Disney. Then I asked a few people and most of them thought that it was Walt Disney too. So I did not feel so bad lol.
The fist cartoon ever was "Fantasmagorie" by Émile Cohl in 1908, at least according to most historians. Check it out:

It goes to show how far the medium has come.
No, Disney did not invent animation but he certainly revolutionized techniques for it. Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs was the first full length animated film, but it would not have been the success it was had Disney not had his animators take a careful look at how people moved. By using dancers and actors as a point of reference (in some cases drawing poses over live action film stills) the animators were able to achieve animation with realistic looking movement.
If you define a cartoon as a sequence of drawn images that tell a story, then how about Trajan's Column (107-113 AD) or the Bayeux Tapestry (1070s)?
