HEY NOOBS! DON'T BE SPAM! YOUR REPUTATION DEPENDS ON IT!

This platform is full of spammers and spam bots, especially in the comments. No one likes them. They are an insult to creative posts, and they take away from the community.

If you are new, or your English is not very good, and you don't want your comments to get flagged, here are some helpful tips:

How to avoid looking like spam

* Do NOT use short phrases like "nice post" or "good job".

Make an effort to say something specific about the post that you personally thought was interesting.

* Do NOT ask for votes or follows or help.

People will vote and follow you if you contribute. Period. So contribute. Period.

* Do NOT post links to your own material.

The exception would be if it is uniquely related to the actual post, or to a comment left by another user. And even then, link sparingly. When in doubt, just don't do it. It's tacky.

* Do NOT start talking about subjects that have nothing to do with the post.

This is dumb. And rude. Don't do it.

* Do NOT use random, irrelevant pictures as your avatar.

Use an avatar or picture that represents you. If you have a silhouette still, or you have chosen a picture of some random item, it will show. Look at users who seem like they have been on here awhile and are doing things for an idea of what's normal and authentic.

* Have actual posts on your blog. That are not written by bots. :)

If I go to your blog and find nothing, or a lot of the same thing, or bot-written posts, I'll flag you.

* Do NOT talk about steem or cryptocurrency

...unless you plan to have a lengthy conversation with someone about something specific you want to talk about. Comments like "I hope steem goes to $20" or "steem and bitcoin are on the rise" is going to get flagged.

* Do NOT copy and paste or repeat short phrases on the same post

...or on any posts, for that matter. You'll get flagged.

* Be sure to read my favoritestupidcomments posts. These are full of great examples of what NOT to do!

Today was pretty much my first day really going through the platform as I made a decent buy of steem tokens on exchange and wanted to check out the platform a lot closer. I’m not sure how the mechanics of turning the upvote into currency happens, but I assume it’s related to steem power. I transferred a few steem to power up my steem power but I literally haven’t been able to find a good post explaining how it all works and the ones that pop in a search are all from 2 years ago and it appears many things have changed. If you could point me to any other posts for noobs it would be appreciated. I didn’t realize their were spam bots but reading through you post here, I see there are a lot around. Every time I saw the “nice post” or something pretty generic, I thought it was just foreign speakers not able to express theselves but likely not.

If you don’t mind a question, as a noob, other than what you posted here, is there anything else I should be doing such as do I upvote everything I like or do I need to be very selective? How much steem power do I need to really be supporting platform? Sorry if these are painfully generic questions.

Although I quiet new, experienced some nothing saying comments on my posts also. For me they are peeps who just want votes for steem etc. When I reply , and i frankly do quiet often, it contributes to the initial post. Or at least i am trying. It is a to good of a platform to be poluted by spam.. thanks for thisbpost

I agree. This is too good of a platform to be polluted by spam. Couldn't have said it better myself!

Have you ever been to Hawaii @littlescribe? They love SPAM there... you can even order it at McDonald's with your Big Mac if you like- no, I am not kidding! I lived there for 4 years, never developed a taste for it though.

Blech! Too salty, and cat-food-ey. But I guess I could see it being palatable after awhile.....?

its helpful post for noobs. Generally I skipped most of posts, but its subject line attracts me most and force my mouse click to open it.

Please share more information/guideline for new member.

Thanks.

Thanks for your input. I will be posting more info for noobs in the future. Glad your mouse was forced to click here. However, if I were scouting spam comments, yours would hit my radar. You gotta be more specific. Being that English is not your first language, you have to try a little harder to not sound like a spammer, unfortunately for you.

Your posts are looking a lot like bot posts. Again, you run the risk of being flagged. Be more specific. What did you like about my post? Let's try that.

Hey thanks for posting the guidelines it's helpful to see what people don't like, however I do post about criptocurrency. It's my new hobby and I am in a constant effort to get the latest crypto news posted as I find it. I don't post about Steen as it's not in my top 10 lol. But ya, so I do post about crypto stuff.

You can post and comment about steem. But it needs to be an actual conversation, not just a random comment anyone could make. Talk about steem, by all means! Steem's the best.

Very helpful for new folks. I made a few of these mistakes back in my early days. :) Where was this post then?!?
I don't care what you say... I'm keeping my avatar. ;P

Oh yes, you are definitely keeping your avatar. And also, commenting was different back in the day. This post does not apply then as it does now. Commenting has morphed due to spamming. We could get away with shorter, quippy stuff in the old days, and even posting links to our blogs. It wasn't such a big deal then because we were ALL new and helping each other out. And no one was worse for the wear. Now, you gotta really make sure you sound like an actual human being. But I think it's good. It pushes users to be more interactive on a deeper level that spammers simply cannot compete with.

True dat! well said.
Times are a changing that is for sure and that is only in the last eight months!

Well, Steem months are like dog months. You miss one week, it's like missing a year. Seriously. I took leave last year to study for the LSAT, and I swear I came back and it was a different universe!!!

  • Do NOT use short phrases like "nice post" or "good job".

nice post!

Good job!

i really hate it when spammers tend to write very irrelevant comments. the common ones were:
i will give you my upvote because you were give. give me an upvote too. tnx

those people should at least understand how bad it is for their reputation . it tends to make my post messy and other's post as well.

I agree. It's just clutter, at the very least. And insulting at the most.

Thanks for your feedback, I will benefit from following your feedback in the future.

@littlescribe - excellent and informative post on the Steem superstructure. I didn't fully understand what all the components of Steemit: Steem, Steem Dollars, and Steem Power until I watched the videos. Keep up the great posts... Upvoted - followed - resteemed!
