Hong Kong Snapshot (52) Kwun Tong Pier, Street Sleepers, Ferry Trip

in #culture6 years ago (edited)

All of you must know the Star Ferry of Hong Kong. As one of the “50 places of a lifetime” and also the first rank of “Top 10 most exciting ferry rides”, star ferry bring us lot of fun and memories. However, there is not only star ferry in Hong Kong. There are totally three ferry routes between the Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. One is at the North Point Pier. Another one is the Sai Wan Ho <-> Kwun Tong Ferry, the one I am going to introduce.

Sai Wan Ho Pier is at the eastern of Hong Kong Island, a non-tourist spot. I can’t figure out when it was built. But Since the Eastern Harbour Crossing start operating in 1989, the demand of the Sai Wan Ho Pier greatly drop. Today, there are two two ferry line at Sai Wan Ho Pier.

In the ferry, we may enjoy the view of the Hong Kong Island East and the Kowloon East. Although the view is not as good as the one of Star Ferry, we have another feeling.

The destination of the trip is Kwun Tong Pier, home of street sleepers.

Today, the Kwun Tong Pier is already the heaven of sleepers. At least 7 sleepers are long term sleepers of Kwun Tong Pier. Some of them even live here for more than 3 years. Some people think they should leave. Some people think they are forced to be. How about the management of the Pier? They seems see nothing and do nothing.

Highlight of the pier is this “Home” at the center of the pier. Tons of waste occupy almost 100 sq feet area. We can see tent, cookwares, table, etc. There is also a dog! You may ask is there any bad influence from the sleepers. Maybe I do not live nearby, I think there is not big influence. Kwun Tong Pier is a good place to enjoy the see view and sun set. Everyday there are still lot of people coming to the pier. And they are doing well with the sleepers.

Beautiful sea view of Kwun Tong

An interesting thing, there is a “hero” among the sleepers. In August this year, an old woman fell to the sea at the Kwun Tong Pier. She was saved by a sleeper. According to the press interview, it is already the 3rd person he saved in this year. He is the owner of the “Sleeper Home”.
Sleepers is always a problem of the society, not only the problem of the sleepers, but also the problem of the society. There are now more and more sleepers in Hong Kong now. One of the main reason of the fxxking high property price. To be honest, if there is a “home”, no one want to be sleepers. The sleepers of the Kwun Tong Pier brings us this issue.

hello @aaronli I remember we sailed from Kowloon side going to Central Hongkong :) that was fun though. I enjoyed t. That was a long ago when I visited HK.

The one should be Star Ferry from Tsim She Tsui to Central~
