What exactly IS a lead? And how do I write one?🤔
Here are a couple of links describing what a newspaper lead is and the how-to.
TL;DR
The lead is the first 1-2 sentences of a newspaper article. The goal is to lead into the article covering the basics: Who, What, When, Where, and How, and inciting enough interest for people to keep reading.
Let's do a little example with the game title:
MAN BITES DOG
Charlie Samuels, 45, of Pittsburg, KS, was seen by cafe patrons biting a Great Dane outside Otto's Cafe on Saturday morning.
This fills all the requirements of the lead (Who, What, When, Where & how).
At this point, you continue with the story as if it's a front-page article. You only have 200 words! You'll want your juiciest stuff to get me to 'turn the page' for the rest of the article. 🙂

I've got a question.
I'd really LOVE to play this game, MAN BITES DOG, as an on-going contest, but fear I don't yet have quite enough following that it would be fun for everyone.😏
If I DO get this started, I would theoretically have individual round winners and an overall winner. The game would continue until someone reached 500 points. I would allow anyone to enter at any time or drop out. 😊
The main difference: The game would consist of ONLY creating HEADLINES each round from your given cards.

The notorious Bishop O-Hannahan Crime Family of Chicago was suddenly toppled Tuesday night, when recordings of a conversation between the Bishop himself and a drag queen known locally as Cruel Beauty leaked to Chicago PD. Beauty, long-time confidant of the Bishop, is reported to have worn a wire, in what O-Hannahan calls a "dirty trick."

No worries. I'm actually getting a touch better at the time management myself, but it's been an uphill battle. 😏

Just got home from the community potluck (that I worked) and my gams are killing me! LOL! Plus, after helping about 600 people in 5 hours... my brains a little mushy. 😐

Hi @chrisroberts, I have to say that you made this writing prompt contest look easy! Since I can't match you for succinctness and cleverness in your use of the key words, I thought I'd go down the easy path and write something a bit more scandalous :D
@carrieallen - I have seen some tough writing contests on Steemit but this is the toughest one so far :p

MOB BOSS BEAUTY "CRUEL" - SAYS D.A.'s PRIEST
The District Attorney's Office released a statement yesterday in response to the absence of Allan Kerrie from his post as District Attorney for the past week. Sources close to the D.A. revealed that he has been under extreme stress after recent strikes against the local mob boss resulted in retaliatory smashes to his personal vehicle, as both sides played mind tricks against their opponent in the government's war against crime syndicates. However, inside sources suggest that Allan is actually undergoing counselling following the breakdown of his marriage and the end of his much publicized affair with Kerry Ellen, who is known to be close to the local mob boss. Former actress Kerry is no stranger to these types of scandals, and the D.A.'s priest is said to have been appalled by the circumstances surrounding the affair, which was rumoured to have ended with a text message from Kerry.

I promise if I start a MAN BITES DOG on-going competition, it will be super easy. I guess the whole, 'write a lead and beginning of a story' makes this challenge just that... a challenge. 😎

@carrieallen - some people will probably think it is easy and some a little bit more challenging :p But maybe that's because I am not used to having to think about writing so much and it is good that I am finding it challenging because that means I am learning + growing :)
CRUEL BEAUTY TRICKS
According to sources at the Royal Hospital, Cinderella has been admitted for emergency cosmetic surgery. Her three ugly step-sisters have been taken into custody and are being questioned. In a bedside interview, a distraught Prince Charming blamed jealousy. He alleges the three women were weary of always being referred to as "the ugly step-sisters" and so they decided to play some cruel beauty tricks on his wife. So far, investigators have identified pepper sauce in her foundation, rubbing alcohol in her mascara and in her lingerie they discovered... (continued on page 6)

Seriously. Before everything went to...sh*t (a few years ago- politically correctness and such) I was setting up all my social media to do this. I have even set up our backroom as my office/recording studio! We got lights, mics backdrops, everything!
I was going to call it Coffee Talk with Carrie, and I could essentially talk about anything, but new episodes would come out first thing in the morning.
