When I think back to my younger years as a Christian, I remember being fearful of God examining my mind. I didn’t want to share with Him my inmost fears, thinking he would turn it against me to “use it for my good.”
For example, if I had a fear about having a child with Down syndrome and not knowing what I would do, would he give me one, just to teach me he would give me wisdom from above?
If I was afraid of my husband dying on the road in a car crash, would he read my thoughts and allow it come to pass, because I needed to learn how to trust God above all? What if I needed to learn a lesson about patience? About God as my provider? And so on…This fear held my prayers in check, until I meditated on this verse…
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11
I realized while it is true God will allow trials in our life for various reasons, He is not just trying to teach us lessons. He really wants to see us prosper. He wants us to be fruitful. And, in John 10:10, Jesus says:
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
In light of that, I take a step back, and trust in the love God has for me. He sees the big picture.

This is so true. I sometimes have the same fears, that God will try to teach me certain lessons. But I think it comes down to trusting Him to do what's best - He truly loves us, and love isn't someone who is looking to simply teach us lessons, but who wants to see us happy and fulfilled.
No, it's not all about us, but God is so amazing that He can work ALL things for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Rom 8:28). We can rest in His promises.
Thanks for the encouragement. It's sometimes hard for me to believe that God is concerned about me being happy when it seems like there are such higher purposes, things more pressing. However, he loves us like a father too. And I can understand wanting good for my children, wanting them to grow in character, and yes, be happy too.

Rebecca, this post brought tears to my eyes. Very good. It's true, God has good planned for us. He just wants us to find our joy and strength in Him, not even in the blessings He provides. I used to follow the "name it and claim it" teachings for a while and I was afraid to make a negative confession over my life. So much so that I even carried into my prayers. I was scared to say how I really felt. But the Bible tells us we can pour out our heart before the Lord. He is a refuge for us. Your post is not only well written but the art is so nicely designed. Keep on sending out the encouraging messages!
Yes, it's so good to keep reminding ourselves of how we can trust the Lord. I like that verse reference, how we can pour out our hearts to him...rather than carefully filter.
