Freewrite Day 532 Cocktail

Can you have a cocktail (or more than one) if you are living a healthy life? That’s a tough question to answer and is up to each individual.

If you are obese and trying to lose weight

  • Is a cocktail something you would have a couple of times a week or a month? Fine – do that. Find the best ingredients and enjoy.
  • Is a cocktail something you would have nightly and get wasted? This is something you might want to stop doing and maybe even get this taken care of before you worry about weight loss.

Above are two dramatically different scenarios. You know where you fall on the continuum. My general advice if drinking is not your issue is to not worry about it. If you do not drink, you will probably lose weight faster if you are losing weight at all.

What about if you do not need to lose weight and just want to keep a healthy lifestyle? I say to do everything in moderation and stay in control. If you are controlled by a need to drink, then it is a problem. If you just drink now and then, so be it. I guess that is the same advice I gave above.

For me, I do not drink much. I had my times, but now I have not got the best of health and few occasions when drinking even comes up. Beer and wine both make me sick. Some alcohols do as well. The few that agree with me, I will drink if I get the chance. But the chance rarely comes in my current life.

Now living in SE Asia, I rarely encounter drinking at all. When I do it never seems to be a problem, so until this prompt, I have not thought too much about it in years.

My post is for the #freewrite daily challenge by @mariannewest. Freewrite is a great way to post on steemit when you do not think you have the time, or talent, or anything to say. It’s a great way to start regular posting on steemit. I know you can do this too! Here is Marianne’s freewrite prompt post for today. Give it a try and surprise yourself.

Beer and wine make me puke too!
Like you, I rarely drink anymore, but don't mind having a fancy cocktail every now and again.

That is very interesting that alcohol is not prevalent in SE Asia. One way I assess my general health is by how much alcohol I drink - when I start having a cocktail every night, I know I am in trouble. I keep no alcohol at home because that is where I drink to excess, and how many cocktails in restaurants can I afford? Even one a night is too costly so this is my method to keep drinking from making me sick. Thank you for discussing this!

You're welcome, @owasco. You have a good strategy and it's good to know your temperament and tolerance. A lot of time when I coach weight loss online, people have told me midstream, that their drinking is out of control. Getting that in check leads to better results.

I was really surprised at the difference in drinking here. They don't do much of it and then they water it down with a lot of ice and mix when they do. And people look out for each other more here. If someone is having too much. everyone else takes care of that person. So different than in the west.

Gluttony reigns in the west now. And Sloth. Maybe a couple of the other seven deadly sins. It's getting a little scary here.

Hey, @fitinfunfood.

Drinking alcoholic beverages isn't something I do myself, but I think it's pretty good advice to give—if you're trying to lose weight, or improve health, limited drinking to none is a good idea.

Without looking it up, I couldn't even say what a cocktail is made with. I guess there's different kinds, and people seem to enjoy them since there are entire parties dedicated to them. :)

I am sure no pro myself. Whatever the other people are drinking is what I have. I used to like a beer once in awhile, but now it makes me sick for days after only one. I can have a margarita though, but who knows where I would find one in Malaysia!

Weight loss is wrapped up in so many emotional things. This is why I try to get people to just do a little bit better at a time. You don't need to change your life overnight. Slow and steady wins the race!

I had to look it up. I thought Malaysia was a muslim country, but apparently non-muslims are allowed to drink, so there you go. :) Wouldn't have a clue where you would look for a margarita, though.

re: weight loss

I agree. Slow and steady and getting to the mindset that this is pretty much your life from now on. Eating better, getting in enough exercise, etc. It's definitely an issue of mind over matter, much more than it is a physical thing, as long as there aren't illnesses or other physical impediments involved, of course. Amazing how much the mind needs to be involved. :)

I wonder about the kind of cocktail you have in mind. There are non alcoholic ones made with juice as well.
