My Entry for CoinGecko's 2019 Q1 Report Contest
The CoinGecko Quarterly Report for Q1 2019 is out and they have a contest for it on STEEM. Today I am entering to talk about the world of dApps on the blockchain.
I am a crypto newbie and honestly do not have too much knowledge about any other coins or blockchains aside from STEEM. This is where I work now and in the last six months, dApps have become an important part of that work.
For more than a year after I got here, the only dApp I used was steemit and I did not know it was a dApp or even know what the term meant. Then someone told me to post through busy, and then through esteem, and then through tasteem, and on and on we go. The world of dApps was becoming mine!
It turns out that steem is a blockchain - the engine so to speak, and that the dApps run on top of it. Anyone can make a dApp and then anyone else can use it. Some dApps are easy and intuitive to use, and others are not so user friendly.
On Slide 34 of the CoinGecko report we see the various categories of dApps:
While gambling is the big winner here, with gaming coming second, most of what I use on STEEM are Social dApps and Media, which I think must be part of "Other" on this report.
I think of myself as in the vanguard of crypto. I am not an early adopter, but I am still in this sector long before the mainstream has arrived. I’m not young and tech-y. I am here because I have a message I post online and stumbled into this world two years ago.
When I first got here, I had only steemit to post my natural weight loss message with. Now the new dApps make life a lot easier and I can recommend coming here to my other content creating friends with more enthusiasm.
One good example of this is the @tasteem dApp at tasteem.io. It is very simple to write a restaurant review there, and 15 minutes after you have posted a good review, you have at least a $3 reward on that post! How many people are writing restaurant reviews for free? Many that I know of. Three dollars may not seem like a lot, but if you are currently getting zero, it can add up.
With CoinGecko tracking over 1300 active dApps and STEEM having just under 100 of those, I feel like we have a lot of room for growth, and I am excited to be a part of it. As you see on their Slide 33 about the dApp Market Summary, this is a booming new world that will guide people into crypto.
Even with my limited understanding, I am able to make steem work for me. I feel like the mainstream is coming and information like we are given in the CoinGecko report is very helpful to new people entering this crazy space. I look forward to next quarter's report and anticipate understanding even more!
