Analysis into how many true followers these services really have - Is $2 good value to re-steem your post for you?

Introducing resteem.com

So you may have seen in your Wallet recently, a memo from @carlobelgado looking something like this:

memo.png

Not seen this memo in the last 3 days? Sorry, you are not one of the lucky 2339 who have had this privilege!

Carlo, and his business partner @joanaltres offer a re-steem service for 2 SBD or 2 Steem and, as far as I am aware, are the longest service of this kind on the Steem Blockchain.

The following image is taken from their website - resteem.com

resteem web.png

As you can see, the site looks quite professional, and the service boasts the ability to send to over 32,000 followers - and over 35,000 followers in the recent memo I received.

Sounds good - but lets have a look at the data before we send our crypto, eh?

Follower analysis

Using @arcange's lovely SteemSQL database, I've been doing a little data mining to see if these numbers add up, and if it's a wise decision to send crypto to this service.

Firstly, lets check how many followers they have combined:

SELECT count(*)
FROM [SQL.STEEMSQL.COM].[DBSteem].[dbo].[Followers] a WITH (NOLOCK)
WHERE following in ('carlobelgado','joanaltres')

= 35483

Looking good, even more than advertised!

Next, lets check how many followers they have combined, that do not appear as followers by both accounts:

SELECT DISTINCT follower
FROM [SQL.STEEMSQL.COM].[DBSteem].[dbo].[Followers] a WITH (NOLOCK)
WHERE following in ('carlobelgado','joanaltres')

= 23152

Hmmm, so that's a little less than advertised - the re-steem will reach this many unique accounts.

So this isn't too bad, the re-steem will still be going out to over 20,000 users. I wonder how many of them are 'active'?

In this example, I've chosen an active user to be someone who has voted in the past month - 31 days:

SELECT distinct follower
FROM [SQL.STEEMSQL.COM].[DBSteem].[dbo].[Followers] f WITH (NOLOCK)
INNER JOIN [SQL.STEEMSQL.COM].[DBSteem].[dbo].[Accounts] a ON f.follower = a.name
WHERE following in ('carlobelgado','joanaltres')
AND [last_vote_time] NOT BETWEEN GETDATE()-31 AND GETDATE()

= 10003

Just over 10000 of these users have voted in the past month.

And in the past week?

= 6530

The number of users likely to see (and potentially vote) on your blog looks to be around 80% less than the number I received in the memo yesterday.

Catch a whale, or dolphin?

While the above numbers look less promising than what's advertised, lets see if we could possibly catch a dolphin, or even a whale with this re-steem service.

The number of accounts with Steem Power greater than 5000 and less than 100,000 which are following this service, and have voted in the past month:

SELECT distinct follower
FROM [Followers] f WITH (NOLOCK)
INNER JOIN [Accounts] a ON f.follower = a.name
WHERE ((cast(left(vesting_shares, len(vesting_shares)-6) as float)486.681/1000000) > cast(5000 as float) AND >
(cast(left(vesting_shares, len(vesting_shares)-6) as float)
486.681/1000000) < cast(100000 as float))
AND [last_vote_time] BETWEEN GETDATE()-31 AND GETDATE()
AND following in ('carlobelgado','joanaltres')

= 161

The number of accounts with Steem Power greater than 100,000, which are following this service, and have voted in the past month:

SELECT distinct follower
FROM [Followers] f WITH (NOLOCK)
INNER JOIN [Accounts] a ON f.follower = a.name
WHERE (cast(left(vesting_shares, len(vesting_shares)-6) as float)*486.681/1000000) > cast(100000 as float)
AND [last_vote_time] BETWEEN GETDATE()-31 AND GETDATE()
AND following in ('carlobelgado','joanaltres')

= 9

Not a vast number of big accounts looking at these re-steemed blogs at all.

Summary

Overall, the data behind this service is disappointing to me.

Clearly the numbers advertised are misleading as the account have a lot of overlap with regards to their followers.

Obviously, you cant expect every user who sees the re-steem to vote, but there are a lot less 'active' users than the number of followers stated by the memo and website.

The number of larger accounts that are following this service and 'active', total a very small percentage of the users who will see the re-steemed blog.

In conclusion, I think that 2 SBD or 2 Steem is a high enough price to pay for a re-steem. My suggestion.... write an awesome blog :)

Has anyone found success with resteem.com or do you have any tales of disappointment to share?

Edit: I just received another memo promoting the service - Should I send this blog and see what happens?

No success to be honest. The whole problem with these resteeming service that no one who is seriously active will want to follow these accounts. Your feed will get mega packed and it just doesn't work.

I think I good idea would be to create VIP resteem. 1 dollar send in your post. The 4 best posts during the day are chosen based on content. That means that you could pay and not be resteemed that's the risk you would have to take.

Now to the followers of this VIP account. You would first have to build a base. I think a lot of bigger fish could agree to follow this channel if they knew there was a maximum of 4 posts resteemed per day also they would know that the best material was choosen.

This kind of service could allow for really good content to spread fast and get the attention of the big ones.

It could be a motivation for people to create top notch content in hope it can actually get some traction

If someone makes a resteeming channel like this I would follow

It could also be divided into categories as well som the people that follow her exactly the kind of content they would be interested in. VIP crypto resteem, VIP photography resteem etc

If you have not already seen it, check out Buildawhale. It does a lot of what you are talking about here, but includes an upvote bot feature. So you send 1sbd or more to get the automated upvote, but then they also have a team of curators looking at every post submitted and selecting the best for their daily curation post.

The Buildawhale program is run by witness @themarkymark, and he is striving to make it the best in the business.

It's not exactly a resteem service, but being in their curation digest is no small thing. I've never managed to crack it personally. Haha

@themarkymark definitely seems to work hard to make the platform better and to support Minnows as well. I have been thinking about joining

I use buildawhale and I'm registered on the discord server, I think @themarkymark is a decent chap.

I think I hit the curation digest once too 😁

I have used several of the upvote bots and I find @buildawhale to be the best, and I know that if I do a good job on my blog I may get included in the curation digest.

Thanks Dan

Some pretty sweet ideas here and I think you should do a blog about the above.

It's like paying for curation, but folks will only submit something they think of worth if so, so it could work in principle?

Like it, cheers for the comments!

It would be fun to make a post about it to check interest. But I don't have time for it. If you want you are more than welcome to use the concept. I would definitely follow this resteem service.

Cheers, I'll have a look around to see if there is something already out there...

Excellent data again! I know I keep asking for more, so tell me to hush at any time. Haha

Is there a way to track how many of those follows have these accounts muted? After all, what good is a follower who doesn't see what is resteemed? I think you have already disproven the value of the service, but if all of those dolphin and whale also have the account muted, it's even less attractive.

Thanks again for doing the data dive!

Haha no worries!

You would hope that these accounts following would just unfollow if they didn't want to see 'all' these resteems.

I just received another note about the service and am thinking of sending him my post 😂

I saw a Resteem offer that claimed to be for free. The thing is, the way curation works here, it wouldn't be free, because to earn a resteem we'd have to pay that account an upvote, and upvote that we could give to someone else while it's still above the 80% marker. So I don'T find that to be exactly for free.

Plus, the account's reputation is....drum roll....2.

Anyone who's been here at least a month knows that you begin with 25 and can move your way up. Meaning the people targeted are newcomers.

So then you might think, they're upvotes aren't wroth too much so they're not giving that much to that account, but that account's posts still make a few bucks.

While there are services that will not only resteem, but will upvote your content and all you have to do is post the link to a post in the comments and they will select a few people.

Oh yeah, these legit account contribute to the platform due to their high rep and them being Dolphins or Orcas. Whales typically have bots. The account in question has very little SP, so their resteem isn't worth the click.

Yes, Carlo has a rep of 0 - doesn't exactly promote the service well!

A resteem from a large account or a curation digest service is much better I think.

Thanks for your comments!

Never have used and never will use a service like this. The numbers in your post tell the whole story about those "services". Like to do and also get resteems, but only if I really find that a certain (or my own) post "deserves" it.

Good skills man, i tried to send this post for him to resteem - he refunded me :D :D :D

Wahaha, the coward. Than I'm gonna give you a resteem because find that more people need to know about those numbers.

That will be 2 SBD then please.
Hahaha.

😁 cheers man!

I'll get that 1.97 SBDs sent over, how many followers you got? 😛

Well, to be honest I had 531 but just lost carlobelgado and joanaltres, so it's 529 now. hahaha.

Hahaha!

Ace 😁 Will sort you out man, bedtime now 😈

And to be honest 2SBD is quite a lot of money for a lot of people who struggle to make that amount on for their posts. If they do manage to make over 2SBD themselves, then hey probably don't need the service.

Very much so.

Should I send my post to the service?!

Computer says noooo!

Your analysis is simply breathtaking! Congratulations on a very well written post! We are known as the honest people and being minnows, or tadpoles, I fail to see the value in resteems. I personally post quality and original content and the rest we leave in God's hands! Blessings! Stephen

Thanks very much Stephen, I'm glad you liked my analysis :)

This is really an useful post! There are many (too many) "service" like this and they seems to be the same: if you look the data behind these services are not so good as they say. Sure, I've never used one of these and I think I'll never use them in the future ;)

Hi Silvia

Thanks for your comments :)

I think you have been proved right in not using these services - they are certainly not as popular as they make out.

Thank you!

Hi, as you already ask for analysis, I'd like to see what does 1% upvote that is worth 0$ do to all of the upvotes of some post and to those who's upvote is something worth and also use it that way. I don't want to moralize, but it has puzzled me all along my time on Steemit. When I tired to figure this voting part of Steemit out, I came across @xervantes about Curation rewards Part 1, who explains his strategy to give 7 posts 30% upvote and to save 2-3 upvotes for the 100% upvotes, if the person is following the 10 upvotes/day strategy.
Is it possible to make this type of analysis?

As you have only a small amount of SP, I suggest you vote 50 or 100% only.

I think your 100% vote is 0.01 so for curation, you are unlikely to receive even 0.001 in most cases.

I would bot worry about curation rewards until you reach larger SP, and focus on posts and comments.

Cheers

Hi Asher,

Thank you for this detailed post. I must appreciate the service you have done to the community by educating and warning. It will save a lot of hard earned coins I am sure.

I personally have never used a resteeming service and never will. I didn't go deep enough to see if it works or not but I had the sense that these accounts must be followed by dead accounts mostly and nobody cares about a resteeming bot anyway. At least I don't.

The best advice you gave is to write a great post instead. I do that often and it works mostly. My comments also get me good surprises in form of rewards because I do them with some heart.

Thanks again. I will resteem it for benefit of my followers.

Thank you for the detailed response @ilyastarar

A good post is better than a poor effort resteemed to a bunch of dead followers, it's just a shame it's likely to be missed by many.

Thank you also for the kind resteem :)

This post has received a 18.05 % upvote from @boomerang thanks to: @abh12345

@boomerang distributes 100% of the SBD and up to 80% of the Curation Rewards to STEEM POWER Delegators. If you want to bid for votes or want to delegate SP please read the @boomerang whitepaper.

Good analyses. Best way to really see the effect is sending them the 2SBD. When they just started I tested their service. I got some votes, but mostly newbies with combined value quite under the 2SBD. But I'm talking about 2 months or more ago. Looking at my own 1.500+ followers of which most are ghosts (following but not voting for my posts) or dead, I'm afraid it is difficult to get enough votes to compensate for the expenses. I tested last couple of weeks with voting services, to push my posts up into the first page of HOT channel to see if that gives more votes and followers - Result: next to nothing. Of course, my posts could be crap, but I assume not all posts I pushed up are of that bad quality. I also realised most of the vote services will give breakeven on costs/revenue point of view, or even give a loss. It takes a lot of time, to bet on the right service in the right time window to come out with a profit, hence not really worth it.

Thanks @edje

This stuff does take time to produce, and like you, I don't think any paid resteem service is with the money.

We just have to continue doing our best and with a bit of luck, get spotted by a user with deep pockets, or lots of users with a little :) cheers!

Agree! :)
