Daily Bird Photos - No. 7 ~ Peacocks In Hiding? ~

in #birds6 years ago (edited)

This is a male Blue Peafowl (Pavo cristatus) - the males are called Peacocks while the females are Peahens. Would you believe me if I said these brilliantly coloured birds can hide so well you might walk right past one on the ground and not see it?

When mating season is approaching Peacocks put on such a display you might call them ostentatious - in fact, a group is called an Ostentation of Peacocks. (Just as we have a Pride of Lions, a Romp of Otters, and a Tower of Giraffes.)

So how are they going to hide? They can fly - it looks a bit ungainly, but they can get up on tree branches quite easily. Still pretty visible though, wouldn't you say?

The next few shots are all the same young Peacock, captured in Beacon Hill Park in Victoria, BC on Feb. 4th, 2018. He's a young bird, just practising his strut for the first time.

I took all these photos with a Nikon D750 camera and Tamron 150-600mm lens.

I never did get a photo of him completely hiding although I probably walked right past him when he got into stealth mode. When you get to the last photo, imagine if he tucks his head down.

Below: scroll the photo until the head and neck are off-screen. Squint just a little... Look at his body - is that not perfect camouflage?
