A collaborative detour (Works in progress)

in #art8 years ago (edited)

Earlier in the week I gathered up my art supplies and sat down to start work on a piece for @everlove 's CollaborativeArtJourney challenge. The challenge was simple enough, print out this picture

Then add your own spin.

As I don't have a printer I decided to try and paint the photo, then add my part on top instead. I started by adding texture to the page with gesso, old book pages and kitchen roll and started adding the base layer of paint.

Then I started staring at it, I knew what I wanted to do, I'd sketched and planned but nothing happened I just couldn't progress with it, or anything else I tried to work on. It was my first case of artist block and I was starting to think I had permanently lost my art mojo.

Until this morning when I opened my eyes and saw this staring back at me from my bedroom wall.

At some point last night in a codeine fuelled post dental surgery haze, I had moved everything upstairs, commandeered a section of wall and started painting.

I haven't got a clue if drugged up me had a specific idea for each of these pieces despite the small mountain of indecipherable scribbled notes she left stuck to my mirror, but she clearly wanted to break the funk by practising different brush strokes with the colours I had picked out from the photograph.

So I followed her lead spending the art time I had today working on these 3 pieces, there's still a way to go but I think this will definitely be my permanent workspace from now on.

How do you veteran artists break artists block? I'd rather not resort to dentistry and drugs next time.
Thanks for popping by

PS while I haven't technically followed the rules for the Art Collaboration (or compleated the project in time, I have opted for the 50/50 payment split so that 50% of this posts earning can help @everlove on her journey to steemfest.

Great photo. my first impression was a bizzarre eye looking down at me. As far as artists block goes; you did the right thing . start out with bits and peices and let them form themselves. I used to have ideas forwritting and I would inevitably get writers block and never finish. Since I started with steemit, my creative juices started flowing again. And again I started getting writers block. This time I decided to just put down ideas of ,y creation and perhaps walk away from it for a while. This seemed to work, and I've had two successful posts and am working on three more. Keep at it .

Thanks roswellrockman, though I can't take any credit for the photo that was @everlove 's work.
Congrats on your two posts and good luck with the 3 you are working on.

I so love this post. These are all really great--I especially love the bottom left.

It's funny how getting blocked can set the stage for something amazing to burst through. Perhaps it's the calm before the storm. I have so many projects going in so many artistic arenas that if I don't feel inspired by something, I just go on to something that's in flow. So glad you're playing here with us.

LOL
I was on some pretty heavy flu medication last night when I did fantasy flower.
It's kind of funny how relaxed I was while making a HUGE mess.
I love that you've commandeered an entire wall for your art!
I can't do that in a rented place but I'm saving up for an 8 foot folding table. My stack of papers, markers and paints are starting to look like the Leaning Tower!
I cannot wait to see what the final pieces look like. :)

I think saw that post can't remember if i commented I hope I didn't, over the counter co-codamol knocks me for six and they gave me the strong stuff.
I'm in rented to so I put left over wallpaper behind the pictures will upgrade to a heavy duty plastic sheet to be on the safe side though.

I think these look amazing! I really like the two on the right, nice fluidity to your movement in these.

Thank you, I really like those two as well, I'm thinking of bringing some brighter colours in tomorrow.

Ah you can't beat a bit of cocodamol inspired art!! Hopefully it broke your block for a while! It's a cool piece!!

it was a bit odd opening my eyes and realising i hadn't been dreaming lol
