Photocircle Digest: "Frame within a frame"

in #blog6 years ago

If I'm truly honest, when I first heard about this composition concept in photography, I didn't know what to think about it since the name seems really confusing to me. Although I already knew that "frame" is being referred to as photo or image, I didn't quite understand that the other "frame" really mean.

In my research about it, I learned that the other word "frame" is actually talking about an objective frame. It essence, it is referred to any element within the picture that can visually "frame" the whole picture, hence frame within a frame.

I think it's better to show you with an example rather than in words. Below is a photo of a dilapidated entrance door that is framed by an archway. Separately, the entrance door wouldn't have impact much as when framed by the archway and vice versa. We can say that both elements (entrance door & archway) complements each other and made the picture more meaningful.

So the basic idea of this composition is to capture the viewer's attention and locked it to where the objective frame has enclosed. And when executed well, the image has the ability to encapsulate the viewer's attention and retain it within the boundary of the frame.

In the case of "leading line" elements, the viewer's attention is being guided towards the main subject. However, there are instances that even though the viewer's attention is being lead to the subject, the is a possibility that the viewer will still wonder around the image and eventually loss sooner.

While in the case of the "frame within the frame", the viewer's attention is visually locked up within the bounds of the frame, whenever the viewer wonder around the image, it will always go back towards the subject since there isn't any opening for it to escape.

The easiest way to execute this kind of composition is through the use of man made structures like an archway. Have you ever walk through an archway and it's leading to a monument or an amazing piece of architecture? I can guarantee that while your walking on it, your eyes are transfixed to the monument ahead. It's for a simple reason that your attention doesn't have any other option to go to.

You're eyes are directed to where the light is coming from and towards that light is a great looking piece of a subject. It's as if your eyes are magnetize by the setup of the archway, subject, and the light.
