"Dear Dawne" - Season 1 - Episode 1
We Have An Experienced "Steemit Personal Mentor" To Help You Directly!
Today!!!
We are proud to present the news that #newbieresteemday and @goldendawne have teamed up in a partnership called "Dear Dawne". @goldendawne is an accomplished member of our community and she wants to help both the members of the Newbie Resteen Initiative and alse the "newbies" we serve.
Dawne will be regularly participating with us in a program called "Dear Dawne" where she will take comments, look directly at your posts and give you one on one suggestions, (and she will even go through your blog... How's that for being awesome!). Basically she wants to be your mentor and help you with ideas, formatting, access to resources, and even applying for various grants and delegations. Plus you can get "discovered" by a valued and connected member than can help you rise through the ranks!
Quick Facts About Dawne
In just the last two months, Dawne has:
- Become the writer & staff member for @qurator (which if you dont know about it, you should)
- Been delegated 10k SP from a whale- she is a Stewards of Gondor recipient
- Holds weekly, sometimes daily, contests to share the delegation she was awarded and given
- She is a mentor in certain Discord groups and helps incoming new members with formatting, posts and how to succeed
In the mentor program she is involved in... she says "the best reward is knowing and watching the people you partnered up with have their own steemit page and posts blossom and grow".
She is the real deal.
To read more about Dawne check out her past post: Personal Mentoring Statement For Homesteadersonline Community or just go to her steemit page @goldendawne an see the quality of her work and the connections she has.
How It Will Work
"Dear Dawne" will be available to help you individually today. She will answer questions, she will offer advice, she will even direct you to the right place if you don't know how to find something on Steemit. This is your chance to connect with a "60" Reputation Steemian on an individual and personal basis.
She is available to give you guidance and help in just a few hours. You just ask your questions to her in the comment section. Its that simple. She will read the comment section and reply individually with you and decide how best to help you from there.
In The Future
You should be on the lookout for these posts in the very near future, and you can also find them by using the hastags #newbieresteemday and the newly created #deardawne. (Note: these hashtags are vital to finding your way through the ever increasing amount of content on steemit and they are invaluable in finding what you want quickly and efficiently. Learn how to use them, it will improve your efficiency quite a bit
I know a lot of people were cut off today because of the "bandwidth" issue. me too btw.
So I am going to see what other comments come in tonight and speak with Dawne on getting an idea of when she would like to come back!
The participation was great by the commenters here today and I'm encouraged with both the questions and the answers she gave. Very helpful!
If you have made it all the way down to this comment, then you are probably interested in this program succeeding so make sure to spread the word out there and let people know about it.
Thank you @goldendawne... you are awesome and we all thank you very much for offering us your advice and mentoring us today!
You're welcome! I have been slipping in and out of this post all day yesterday and now again this morning. I will keep checking back throughout the day now.
awesome, thanks... I've been down again today too! (as has many others I'm sure)... I will message you on discord tonight and see if we can do this every week for awhile.. I think it can build some "steem" ;)
ABsolutely... make a post once a week and I will check and comment.
Its a deal.. we will make this grow. Thank you so much again, I know everyone liked it!

Hi Dawnie.
My question is to do with the best use of hashtags.
Is it worth using ones such as photography when we are just starting out?
Should we make up our own?
Is there any real SEO value in the first one used (in terms of Google search e.g.)? If so, should we be taking that into consideration?
What can we do to get the most value from them?
Does the strategy change once we're more established and if so at what point?
Thanks 💙
Ok, let's break this down some.
Starting your own tags versus using existing one. When starting out I would HIGHLY recommend using existing tags. I have been on this platform for just over 6 months and have been doing a weekly post called HOLLER OUT Tuesday. So for about 25 weeks I have been writing this weekly post but it wasn't until about three or four weeks ago I started using hollerout as a tag. Why? Because I wasn't visible enough. now that I have established myself, I fell comfortable enough to tag myself this way.
SEO and google value- Yes there is to some degree. If you were to search a keyword or user/member on the steemit search at the top of the page, you will see the top few links are adverts and such. Scrolling down you will see steemit based posts and members then. So SEO can be crucial but try not to focus too much on that when starting out. Establish your daily dedication by making quality posts and commenting on others'posts like there's no tomorrow. My first four months on steemit, I would spend an hour or two making my own posts and another 4-6 just commenting and interacting with others. Spreading my visibility.
Strategy changing over time? OH YES!!! I have implemented many different ways of working steemit. I still spend about an hour a day working on the qurator newsletter every day, I make 1-4 posts per day (about 2-3 hours) then the rest of the day I comment.I am on steemit and in Discord for about 10-12 hours Mon-Fri and about 6 hours on the weekend. No one way is correct on how to establish yourself or how much to comment and post; every person is different. It also depends on what communities you belong to as well as what your tag audience is.
Thank you for taking the time to answer. Hope it was helpful for other minnows too! 😍
You're welcome!!! All the learning and tips take time. Believe me... it took me forever to figure out some things on steemit. But once you do... everything else seems to start falling into place.
Looking forward to that day!
Today I've gone back to the beginning to try and get a better grasp of curation, upvoting etc. I spend most of my time reading, comment and replying so it would be handy to understand it better.
Oh.... You are doing EXACTLY what you need to be doing- commenting, replying.
Check out the FAQs section for upvoting and curation questions.
Sorry to be dense but which FAQ section are you referring to? 😁
No worries... if you are on a laptop or computer, go to the upper right corner and see those three lines to the right of your profile pic? CLick on that... then click on the FAQ tab. It gives you some basic steemit info and you can always use the search box to look things up... ie. formatting, links, how to curate, etc
Ha ha! 😊And ah ha!💡 I was going to ask this very snagging, tagging question!!
And your answer @goldendawne was really, like REALLY, helpful, thanks so much. ❤️
I had been pondering how to do this, when to do it, and the advice you have given is bang on! I will create my own tags eventually but will use existing ones until I have sufficient numbers of followers (hopefully) waiting for me to post. Looooong way to go yet but persistence and kindness will get us all there. 🚂
Just gotta say...your own dedication in terms of a) your success 💐and b) the sheer amount of time you dedicate to steemit is epic! ⏰Slightly daunting too for those of us with perhaps less time to devote to steeming but inspiring nonetheless...way to go, sister!
And my grateful thanks for showing us the hacks, tips and ideas that will help us all grow.
What goes around comes around...and may we all benefit and share in the turning of that particular wheel😊
Big sweeping bow of gratitude to you💚
You're very welcome. As I have said to so many people over the last few months, nothing was more discouraging than NOT knowing what I was doing when I first joined last July.
I honestly never knew if anyone was mentoring others at the time.
Yes, exactly the not knowing what you're doing decreases confidence and that affects everything.
Knowing someone is actively engaged in helping us newbies is the best form of encouragement you can get, along with the constructive crit, of course!
And from what I have seen extending the hand of friendship is another kindness that also helps people to blossom.
I just wrote a post about kindness and the ripple effect so I know you are in for some lovely good karma for all the really useful advice and service you have offered to assist all of us❤️
In peace
Lily⭐️
What a great idea! Resteemed!!! @goldendawne I hope this doesn't wear you out! You have been such a supportive Steemit member and were one of the first commenters on my posts when i joined a few weeks ago. Thank You! I am now ready to join that discord you told me about a while back..
lol- no, I'm good! I prefer working than nothing at all. If I can pass on advice to other people that keeps them motivated, striving for the next level and achieving success- then I am THRILLED!
And that's one of the reasons we all love you!!! You are amazing!!
Please check out my post https://steemit.com/steemit/@deliberator/be-careful-what-you-wish-for thank you :-)
Morning! Ok... the first thing I notice on this post is the formatting.
I would recommend checking out this link- there are SO many out there though, but I have used this one myself early on.
https://steemit.com/steemit/@steemitguide/markdown-and-html-code-guide-for-beginners-that-includes-5-useful-tips-to-edit-posts-and-comments-using-the-raw-editor
It shows you how to set up titles, sub-titles, bold/italicized/etc words, centering pics/images, etc. VERY useful!
I know my first week or two on steemit was ALL about learning. Formatting... centering images, making my posts aesthetically friendly and easy on the eyes for the reader.
One other point- keep your posts clean. Insert links into the formatting. See this link on how to do that. The more professional you can make your post, the more people will enjoy reading and you up the chance of them stopping by again.
Example- Just as I did to this link, versus the one above; which looks better?
Superb thank you, will take a look now.
You're welcome!
I forgot to say good morning back, my bad, so good evening now, I have downloaded Typora, and so far it looks excellent, so I hope this is the game changer for me, thank you.
You're welcome and if you're on Discord chat and need anything, you can always find me there too.
And have a great evening! lol
Great to have you here @goldendawne. As a heads up, @davemccoy is having internet and bandwith issues his end so if he's in and out today on Steemit that's the cause. Thank you so much for partnering with our initiative. Steem on.
Yes, he just messaged me on Discord. The bandwidth thing can really become a nuisance some days.
Agreed. Well, I'm at the helm so anything you may need then don't hesitate to shout. If you find any newcomers who could use a boost also let me know. I'm greeting newcomers in the introduce yourself tags at the moment, but will be checking my replies frequently. Thank you again. Your involvement and support means a great deal to all of us.
You're very welcome!
I do the same thing in meeting and greeting incoming members that are homesteaders and gardeners, so I can understand the time involved. Especially when trying to grow a community and support system.
I believe you were one of the first to greet me when I joined. I think my first foraging journal was voted on and commented on by you as well. It's support like you give that I wanted to pay forward and pattern my Steemit habits on when I started this initiative with @davemccoy. In short, you are awesome and I'm absolutely blown away that you have agreed to help us.
Probably was me! Anything gardening related I am on it fast!
lol- I am all about helping people. I remember what the first month on here was like for me. VERY intimidating
ahh the dreaded 'bandwidth' message:) Poor Dave, it must be killing him! I just wanted to say @mudcat36 and @goldendawne, you guys are doing an amazing job with this initiative, as is @davemccoy! I've been helping newcomers along the way too, but will sure pass them on if there's things I cannot answer! Cheers!
The bandwidth issue does go away as you progress on steemit- luckily.
But if anyone has issues with that and you need to speak with me- join Discord and find me on there. I'm on Discord from 5am until 4pm EST
Dear Dawne
good day
Its my 3rd week now on steemit but still I'm having a hard time here. Any tips and ideas for us newbies? and also please check my post any comments and suggestions are welcome to improve my future post
https://steemit.com/travel/@s3carlo/5paac8-sinulog-grand-parade
thanks in advance :)
ok... image overload. Which can be fine... if you give a little description below each picture explaining what is happening. Having these image descriptions can break up the overload as well as explain to a reader or follower what is happening... what this is.
Example...
for this picture. This may be how you could set it up
First off the pics are centered as well as the descriptions plus I bolded the words.
See the link above in my reply to @deliberato
thank you so much I learn a lot ill try it in my next post
Dear @goldendawne,
I reallly appreciate if you gave me a suggestion how to select a good articles that suit on me, kindly take a look at some of my works, and I looked at the link you gave to deliberator how to set up titles, sub-titles, bold/italicized words, centering pics/images, that is one of my problem co'z I using only my phone with busy.org for posting. Thank you for your feedback 😊
WHile I am not familiar with busy for posting, as I have never used the website... I will tell you that posting from only a phone app can be difficult itself. I will comment, UPvote and resteem from my phone app but would never use it for posting- but that is my preference. I like to be sitting at my laptop with all my resources, links and information.
In regards to picking out what to write and post about:
No one can tell another what to write about. Some of my best posts and ideas have come from reading others posts, ny garden, my homestead skills and just in general my desire to learn new things.
oh yes, that is how why it's hard for me, I better use a computer instead of cp...thank you so much for the info I'll stick it to my mind, interests, passionate and particular skills that I want to share....much appreciated your kindly replied.😊
Hey @davemccoy I have kinda latched on to the info you share and consider you a mentor to me. You have great ability to communicate what seems complicated at first. You have answered every query I pose and appreciate your devotion to just that. We should have a ASK DAVE . Thanks for another learning opportunity. RESPECT
Thank you @fracasgrimm that is an honor and I'll be your mentor anytime!
And I am happy that I can help communicate things simply to you, that's how I like my mind to think. lol ... seriously, I was once told by a professor that if I can't explain it simply then I didn't really understand it. It has stuck with me for sure!
RESPECT back to you too, my teammates deserve nothing less! :)

Thank you @goldendawne for the assistance you are providing for @mudcat36 and @davemccoy 's initiative. I have read all the tips you have given out over the life of this post so far, (13 hour mark). It has been very useful to myself and I am sure others have not asked questions because they have taken time and are ingesting the information you have put out there.
Embedded link's, that is one that I wish a lot more people would use, I mean the whole http link is to messy looking. The markdown link was one of the first that I found when i joined and it is easy to read and decipher. The photo overload post, I have mentioned that a few times myself, glad I am not the only one who likes to know what the picture is about or means to the poster. I do wish more people would give why's of why they posted a video also.
Anyways, thanks for helping everyone out, have a nice day.
SOmetimes having a person looking in from the outside can really help. I know there are times when I read a post and see little things.... I make sure NOT to do those same things on my own posts. I feel if it annoys me, then how are other people viewing it?
