Happy Yorkshire Day including a trip to York for @c0ff33a ☕️

in #yorkshireday6 years ago

The 1st of August is Yorkshire Day in the UK - it's a real event you can look it up if you don't believe me! A celebration of all things Yorkshire like Flat Caps, Whippets and Yorkshire puddings of course. While Leeds might be the biggest city in Yorkshire (I read that, although to be honest I think Sheffield might be bigger but I don't really have any reference other then visiting both many times) York is the most famous and greatest tourist attraction, with it's historic buildings many dating well over 500 years old.

Today I was visiting York to attend a "Pop Up" event in a small art gallery run by Italian espresso coffee machine manufacturer La Marzocco, my main interest was a panel discussion about visiting coffee growing plantations - "Origin" to learn more about growing and processing coffee beans and forge relationships with the people that grow coffee.

IMG_4024.JPG

The street the gallery is on has quite modern buildings, although they have been built to try and match the history of the city. At the end of this street though you quickly enter onto the Shambles, a famous set of Streets in York centre.

IMG_4025.JPG

As some of the original buildings of this historic town, these narrow streets are always busy with tourists and home to a variety of shops.

IMG_4027.JPG

I was just 15 minutes early from the event so grabbed some nearby pictures, you could take so many photos throughout these streets but this was an evening event and I was not to keen on hanging around longer then I had to!

IMG_4029.JPG

The narrow streets do open out into bigger squares in places.

IMG_4032.JPG

Bettys is a famous Tea Room and Cafe in York, popular and with it's own history.

IMG_4034.JPG

It is the narrow streets that hold the most appeal, York also has The National Railway Museum - the largest of it's kind in the world and it is free to enter. It is also home to the Only Bullet train you can see in real life outside of Japan. I visited once many many years ago, I should maybe visit again some time soon.

IMG_4035.JPG

There are many shops here, all very very small but covering all types of merchandise - you could literally find anything you might need here. Many are very old and historic - but you also find the modern and bizarre as well.

IMG_4038.JPG

And here we can peek at York Minster the history of this place of worship is fascinating, to give you an idea of how old it - the church in it's current form was completed in 1472.

IMG_4039.JPG

This current building actually started construction back in 1080, replacing an Anglo-Saxon construction that had been on the same spot but got severely damaged during the Harrying of the North.

IMG_4073.JPG

It is so big you can not even get far enough back because of buildings behind to fit it all in a photograph - well not using an iPhone anyway.

IMG_4075.JPG

I have done the tour inside a few times, that in itself is pretty much a day of task - but it is the immense size of this structure that truly astounds - modern buildings might be much larger but they were built with machines. With each stone that makes this structure crafted by hand, you can really appreciate why it took 400 years to fully complete.

IMG_4076.JPG

The only photograph I took in the coffee event, the art gallery was actually quite a small single room - and it was filled with people. So I could have taken plenty of pictures of peoples backs...

IMG_4077.JPG

You can not really park near the centre of York, so I had a 20 minute walk back to where I had found some on street parking - that was literally at the edge of the centre! I'm not a fast walker, the shopping area of York is vast though - you can drive around certain bits but it's finding somewhere to park for a while that is the problem.

IMG_4079.JPG

This small church is the opposite side of the city to the minster, I have no idea about it's history.

IMG_4082.JPG

And a little more of the historic buildings.

IMG_4088.JPG

This however was a surprise, it's probably been 4 years since I was past this area of York, but since then what I recall was a car park has now had multiple shipping containers dumped onto it and turned into some sort of random Mad Max style bar and street food complex. York has a big University and Student population - I suspect this trendy complex is catering for them mostly - it's still a surprise that a city steeped in History and with incredible architecture the council allowed something so out of character to be developed.

IMG_4089.JPG

The artwork is pretty funky, and does encompass some of the famous aspects of York like the Horse Races

IMG_4090.JPG

And it is certainly popular, you can see all the tables filled for outdoor dining..on top of a metal shipping container.

IMG_4091.JPG

Funky art, more random then meaningful.

IMG_4092.JPG

And another outdoor terrace, fascinating really I would be interested to see exactly what the planning application looked like that was presented for this dining area.

Yorkshire Day including a visit to York done....I hope it was entertaining for you all.
