W.W.'s Top 5 Photos Of Steemit :: 004 :: March 1, 2018

Number 004? What???
What happened to 001, 002, and 003?

Yeah, the last one of these posts I made - 003 - was back on Nov 22, 2017 (click here to view). So it's been a little while. My hope is to bring this back full time. There is no set schedule for when these will be posted, because it all depends on how long it takes me to find 5 of what I consider to be the best of the best photos on Steemit at any given moment. Considering that photos get posted to the #photography tag literally about 5 to 10 per second, it can take a while to wade through everything to find the gems, and then to confirm their authenticity.

:: REMINDER ::

This is not a contest. It is merely my own subjective opinion; a collection of images that speak to me the loudest. The only requirement I have is that they must be original photographs that you created. Please also post the gear & settings that were used.

100% of all liquid SBD earnings for these posts
will be split among the featured photographers.

Today's Top 5 Photos of Steemit

1. "My first shoot with Sara" by @davekavanagh

I'm a portrait photographer by trade, so this one stuck out to me probably the most. The lighting used in this series of images is fantastic. Some sort of light modifier, such as a softbox or octabox, appears to have been used to create a very creamy and even result. It also appears that the photographer understands a technique called "Frequency Separation", which creates very clean skin, but not artificially so, which removes blemish colors, but not natural skin texture. Well done.

2. "Train to Another World" by @jackobo

I'm a sucker for good infrared photography. And with this image, I'm fond of the leading lines of the track, sending you straight to the horizon and across to the left, which I give credit to for me finding the walkers under the tree. @jackobo said this was taken digitally, so I assume it was either taken with a modified camera body where the IR filter has been removed from the sensor, or perhaps he used a screw-on IR lens filter, such as the Hoya "R72" IR filter, which can be found at bhphoto.com.

3. "Photochallenge Beach Wednesday: Tall Ship Leaving Elkhorn Harbor" by @randystiefer

The thing I love about this one is that it nails the rule of thirds. Granted, the ship is centered, whereas in most rule-of-thirds photos, it would be located at one of 4 quadrants, but the horizon is on it, and it seems almost perfectly straight.

4. Athabasca Falls and Mount Kerkeslin by @intrepidphotos

Now, I don't normally go for landscape photos. They need to strike me just right. This is one of those photos. The elements that come together as you go from top to bottom, to me, are just awesome. The dynamic sky, the looming mountaintop and it's sprinkling of snow, the treeline which gives way to the water, which spills down in a waterfall between a set of amazingly layered rock formations to the ground below. Amazing. (<---and I don't use that word often)

5. Milky Way Above St. Francis Church by @nkera

I feel this one almost needs no description, but since I'm not including the image I kind of need to. This is a beautiful shot of our Milky Way Galaxy above the silhouette of a church. I have always adored astrophotography, even if a telescope isn't involved. I'm still personally trying to master capturing the Milky Way like this, so I have a lot of respect for people who can do it right. A lot of it can be lent to location, and where I'm located has bad light pollution (thanks Walmart!). According to nkera's description, this is a stitching of 4 vertical shots, each taken with a 15-second shutter speed.

Thanks for tuning into 004!

Amazing collection of images in there! Will definitely be adding this tag to future posts!

Thank you for sharing this at the PYPT. I appreciate that you manually curate them and even give your insights about the photos. I'm sure that's a lot of time and hard work to go through the thousands of photos in Steemit. Will check out the photos you shared :)

Awesome Initiative. I really wish more people from your ranks start doing more great work like yours. I heard about it on PYPT. Thanks for sharing. Resteemed for more exposure...

Thank you for featuring my photo in your blog

Great photo series @winstonwolfe 👍 - it deserves a lot more attention (I've resteemed for what it's worth).

It would be cool if you were able to include the actual photos in the post, but on the other hand, it encourages readers to check out the original photographer's channel.

Glad you like! And yes, that's exactly why I don't want to include the photos in my posts, because I want to give incentive to the reader to actually go to the photographers' post and give them some love, as well as encourage them to follow them.

I agree. I respect that choice. I also like how you describe everyone. Nice Curation initiative!
