Witness Updated to v0.20.8, Eagerly Awaiting RocksDB Rollout in January

in #witness-category6 years ago (edited)

Yesterday, Steemit Inc. released an update to Steem Velocity. The update, v0.20.8, "fixes a fatal memory leak during reconstruction of the block log index," as is mentioned in the github release page.

I updated my server and was getting blocks a few hours later. The new server is quick than the old. It costs more, but it feels good to have things go quicker, even though Im at the bottom of the barrel at rank 99 ;) Maybe that will change when I get my app out that should help people curate in communities.

@blocktrades recently announced RocksDB development assistance being provided to Steemit Inc. The @blocktrades team is familiar with how to implement the improvements that will help reduce the RAM cost for hosting a consensus node for witnessing blocks. It should also help reduce RAM costs for full nodes which reach over 100 GB of RAM at the moment, or is it over 200 GB? It's crazy high anyways. With RocksDB, the expected size may be as little as 4GB for economic nodes, according to the RocksDB announcement.

RocksDB should be out by the end of January if everything goes according to the plan Ned put out. Things are looking much better for the costs of servers in the future :) I hope it all goes according to plan.

It's getting obscenely high. What will happen a few years down the road? Will every witness need to maintain a 1TB server at home?

What will happen a few years down the road?

Probably stacks of load balanced Linux servers the way things were going. 4GB sounds like a game changer.

I hope as novacadian says that they split the chain into time chunks and relegate older data to less active nodes. Otherwise, yes it will get ridiculously big, and everyone runs it pointlessly with it never being used...

I was under the impression that Ned declined the offer from @blocktrades a week or so ago. Has there been a change in this regard? The post you linked to is almost two weeks old and Ned has been awol from what I can tell since he bailed on his last update he had rescheduled.

Glad your new server is going much faster, and I appreciate you are eating the costs during these down times to better serve the community. I have always felt witnesses should lead by example, and subsidizing your server is a testimony to your dedication to the community and chain. Thank you for caring.

Was reviewing my votes with just that thought in mind; so as to free up a witness voting slot. It is hard!

We are soo blessed with exceptional talent and dedication in the steem community!

I thought Ned had accepted it, and asked blocktrades to post about the offer. My mistake... Thanks for the encouragement :)

Yes, RAM consumption is very costly for every witness, and going into step function from HF19 to HF20 ( 50GB difference). So, kudos to blocktrades for reaching out and ned for accepting the offer!

Any sneakpeek into your app for curation? :)I am saying this in front of crowdmind - we're delighted to read about this :)

I think the offer was turned down and they are completing it themselves

Well I only started to design it and code, so not much to show right now. Work each day, cooking, etc. takes time... :/

The migration would be crucial for survival should the going get really tough price-wise.

It seems what one need calculate for worst case scenario is a 10 cent steem at a $2000 BTC with the exchange's steem/BTC pairing.

Hopefully all goes well and Steemit Inc manage to complete the RocksDB work on time.

They turned down the Blocktrades proposal as they are apparently close to completion I believe.
