Mistakes I've Made on Steemit, and How I Plan to Fix Them

in #video8 years ago (edited)

In the following video I discuss some of the mistakes I believe I have made on Steemit and how I hope to avoid making them in the future. I intentionally shot this in one take without rehearsing, second takes, or even editing. I didn't even watch past the first few seconds. I wanted you guys to be able to see the "real me" speaking from the heart. I hope it provides some insight, but be warned, I start off a bit slow but quickly gain steem. One of the downsides of speaking unrehearsed and unedited :)

TL;DR Going forward the primary question I will be asking myself is not, "Is this a good idea for a post," but instead, "Is this post good content/art?" I suspect this means that I will post slightly less frequently, focusing more on quality over quantity

P.S. I get the sense that some people think I am upset in this video. I just want to be clear that those long pauses are just what happens when I don't edit them out! I'm not emotional or sad during this video, though I now realize, it might look like that at times. I'm just gathering my thoughts and trying not to sound like a total dummy :) I'm not trying to appear upset, whether sincerely or insincerely. That's just how I talk.

P.P.S. In the video I don't mean to equate negative comments with trolling. I don't view negative comments as inherently troll-ish. They are entirely legitimate. For those wondering, here is how I approach comments:

  • Vague positive comments: ignore, probably just a bot or someone looking for curation rewards
  • Clearly thought out positive comments: I will upvote your comment, probably respond, and congrats, you've made a friend for life!
  • Constructive negative comments: I respect your honesty and willingness to stick out your neck, if you're right, we're good. If I think you're wrong, but you are cordial and civil, we're still good. Thanks for your feedback.
  • Not constructive negative comments: Ignore, boring
  • Trolling: Ignore, boring

Great video, I love that you didn't edit it a bunch. I always feel self conscious about the way I talk on camera :) I get super nervous in front of the camera and forget what I wanted to say too :)

I love that you talked about the effect! I was listening to a podcast on how personalty tests are very inaccurate because everyone perceives themselves in a different way.

I also feel that sense of self entitlement at times, I think it's a flaw we all need to stop having! No other website pays us to post! We need to really appreciate this platform!

Don't give up about Scott Adams. Your best performing content is videos: how about giving it another try with a video this time?

I like that you are authentic and stepping up to things that scare you. That's huge! We all know there will always be negative comments. And how human of us to dismiss all the great things people said. Instead we focus on that one negative comment. How we perceive their comments is the reality. What is the gift?

Their comment is their opinion, not yours, but instead we choose to accept it as a negative, judge it, run it over a few times and beat ourselves up with it, when in fact what they said is merely a reflection of themselves.

"Opinions are like assholes. Everybody has one!"

Actually I think the Dilbert post gave you (and us) much more than you could have expected. This illumination that you've experienced and shared with us is worth much more than a couple of thousands USD you could have gotten from that Dilbert post.

And the overall impact is much greater - for me, the conclusion you conveyed in the video has much more value than having Scott Adams here at this stage. He will come to Steem sooner or later anyway, whereas we need our own good content now - for our own sanity.

Wow, thanks so much. I kind of agree. And that was actually one of the things I wanted to talk about but didn't really remember. It's so true. The best thing you can do for steemit is create good content.

I think you were a little hard on yourself.

The two posts you made after Dunning Kruger Effect have made a combined $109. Sure, not trending page numbers, but that still looks successful to me. If my posts make more than $10 I think they're successful . (I've had a few in the hundreds, none have broken $1,000 yet.)

So you didn't hit the trending page with each post. So what? You've done good work.

I also agree with you. Some posts here are TOO Long. It's hard to read that much in a web broswer.

It's not about the numbers it's about what was going on inside my head while creating the content. I think the numbers provide some guide but they're just relative. For example, if my average post was getting $1 and I happened to notice that whenever they made 10 cents I wasn't being true to myself, the money Would still be providing a useful signal. But I agree, I should be grateful for every penny my posts make.

[] The Vikings in Norway love you. We do, you speak so clearly to us. Can we book you sometime in the future to speak to us live here in Norway? Have a nice day ;-)

Do you use slack?

No, never heard about slack before. We are thinking more in the terms of booking you for a trip to Norway in the future sometime, and speak to us on a stage here. We do MLM in Norway with a cryptocurrency company. The history is: we started with this crytocurrecy company one year ago. We found steemit 14 days ago, and like it. We did se YOU on youtube yesterday. Then we said, WOW what a guy, he speaks so clearly. We understand him so good. He speaks directly from himself. So I wanted to find you in here on steemit to see more and vote. When I found you in here (thaks to you on youtube) I also discovered that you had a reply to my reply in a post and I had voted for you earlier. Just a coincidence? No I do not think so. I think we (the Vikings) need you (he, he he).

PS. Hope my English is understandable. You see people misunderstand me in my native language. I think it is because I use many feelings, usually the high toned,

I want to address one specific part of your video. The small post idea is a GREAT IDEA! We need more easy user thought of Steemit alterations like this one that we can simply implement with a hashtag. Thanks for starting the experiment. I actually used the hashtag in another post of mine. Quick and valuable easily digestible posts are desired by many of us . Twitter is the ultimate proof of one extreme version of people's love of a "small post". https://steemit.com/ethereum/@bitcoinmeister/lessons-from-the-ethereum-hard-fork-ethereum-classic-stands-for-something-and-much-more

Cool, good to know! I was also going to use the "micropost" tag to describe twitter-sized posts, but I tend not to think in brief sentences :)

I was planning on playing around with "Stweets" on here but I have yet to get around to it,

Even better. If any ever come to mind I'll use that tag :)

I really appreciate this video, @andrarchy - you do something that I, myself, have not yet been able to muster up the courage to do: post. Not just articles - video posts! That's a beast in and of itself, and I sincerely look forward to seeing more from you.

You're kicking ass!

Thank you, yeah the editing can be the real bear. Hours and hours that no one ever sees. Glad you're liking what I'm putting out there!

Don't let the haters get you down. Every person in any sort of spotlight has fans and haters. Sometimes the haters yell a little louder. You have to brush them off and keep doing you. Let your accomplishments shut them up!

Thanks man. Just to be clear though, I'm not pointing a finger at anyone but myself. The negative commenter had totally valid points. And trolls are just trolls, so nothing to talk about there. I'm a smidge disappointed at myself, no one else. But I'm not that disappointed. I just want to do better :)

You're welcome. Just don't let the negativity eat away at you and affect your next work!

You got it. I'll do my best :)

What can I say, I love this meme. So you're getting an upvote :)

Thank you for your upvote @andrarchy :)
