SPIRULINA - SUPERFOOD OR SUPER FAD (+ GREEN SMOOTHIE RECIPE)

We're back at talking health food trends! These days spirulina is popping up at most juice bars or coffee parlors as a fancy powerup. But does it deserve all its recently gained fame or are we looking at a clever marketing superfood craze?

Though I think all fruits and vegs are superfoods, some, however, are adding just a little more punch to your health and well-being. Spirulina is definitely one of them. Though it is kinda fun to play with the kitchen (it comes in blue and green), it is chock full of good-for-you nutrients and much-needed protein.

So what exactly is this mysterious new trend?


Though mostly referred to as blue-green algae that live in freshwater ponds, spirulina is, in fact, a cyanobacterium, meaning it gets its energy from photosynthesis, just like plants.

Spirulina contains significant amounts of calcium, niacin, potassium, magnesium, B vitamins and iron. The quality of the protein in spirulina is considered excellent and best comparable to the protein you get from eating eggs, giving you all the essential amino acids your body needs.

FYI: It is often claimed that spirulina contains decent amounts of vitamin B12 (important for vegans and vegetarians), but this is false. Spirulina, unfortunately, contains pseudovitamin B12, which has not been shown to be effective in humans.

GREEN SMOOTHIE RECIPE USING SPIRULINA


INGREDIENTS (SERVES 2-3)


2 cups spinach
1 cup pineapple chunks
1 banana
2-3 passion fruit
1/2 small soursop
1/2 avocado
2-3 tsp spirulina
water as needed

DIRECTIONS


Blend spinach and water until smooth. Add the remaining ingredients and blend again. If the smoothie is too thick, add more liquid base. If you have a high-speed blender, throw everything in at once.
