Reverb and echo in combination can give a very life-like representation of a room. Imagine you are in a room with a hard wall at the far end. When you clap you will hear an 'echo' milliseconds after the clap. Then you will hear a diffused ambient sound of the room as the sound ways dissipate. Echo gives that first 'echo' and Reverb gives the soft diffused sound which quickly fades away. Either alone sounds ok, but never quite convincing. A careful combo of both make very nice room sounds. Try experimenting and you will be quite surprised with the results.
