A visit to Athens, Greece
Hello fellow Steemians!
Today, I'd like to show you Athens, Greece. I was there two years ago, as part of a Greece and Italy cruise.
The stopover was short (one day), but I managed to snap some nice shots of the Parthenon and its surrounding area. Of course, it was full of tourists, so getting anything without any disturbance was a feat in itself...
Athens is considered as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy. Piraeus, its port, is both the largest passenger port in Europe and the second largest in the world.
The city boasts many ancient monuments and works of art, including the Parthenon, the Acropolis and the medieval Daphni Monastery. It also was the home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum.
Last but not least, Athens hosted the first modern-day Olympic Games (1896) and the 2004 Summer Olympics. Its National Archeological Museum features the world's largest collection of ancient Greek antiquities.
The Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Olympics (1896) happened. It is the only stadium in the world built entirely out of marble.
The Odeon of Herodes Atticus, on the southwest slope of the Acropolis
The Erechtheum
The Parthenon
The Temple of Olympian Zeus
The Theatre of Dionysus Eleuthereus
Adrian's Gate
Another thing for which Athens is famous is its marathon.
The Athens Classic Marathon is a long-distance running road race happening every November. It is based on the story according to which Greek soldier Philippides ran from the Battle of Marathon to Athens in 490 B.C. to announce that the Greeks had defeated the Persians. He then collapsed and died from exhaustion shortly after.
The marathon was one of the original modern Olympic events in 1896. However, the distance (42.195 kilometres) became standardized in 1921.
Here is a 90-second video I created, featuring all the photos in this post.

Love this image. Definitely a place you want to be!
So pretty!
Crete is its own planet on earth...it’s is really a dream, I enjoyed Crete for 2 1/2 years. I’m sure I have somewhere, going to take a look at some boxes in the garage.
Wonderful! Yes, that's what I heard about Crete. It's its own world. Like Hawaii, it seems. :-)
