From ALMATY 🇰🇿 to TORONTO 🇨🇦 - Two Days inside Planes and Airports [EN/DE]

Hi Steemians! I have crossed ten time zones in the last two days and I'm already reporting from Toronto! Today I would like to provide you with some insights into this two-day travel odyssey!

Hallo Steemianer! Ich habe in den vergangenen beiden Tagen zehn Zeitzonen durchquert und melde mich nun schon aus Toronto! Heute möchte ich euch ein paar Einblicke, in diese zweitägige Reiseodyssee präsentieren!

The first complications occurred already after the taxi ride from my hotel to the airport in Almaty. Taxi drivers in Kazakhstan are convinced that their passengers are responsible for having the appropriate amount of fare with them. So far this has always been the case with me, or else I have given a small tip. This time I only had big banknotes, so I had to find a shop at the airport terminal that could change the money for me and walked through the terminal together with the annoyed taxi driver. In the end, I had to buy a drink to get smaller notes. The driver took the money with a frown and left the terminal without saying a word.

Die ersten Komplikationen gab es schon nach der Taxifahrt von meinem Hotel zum Flughafen in Almaty. Taxifahrer in Kasachstan sind der festen Überzeugung, dass ihre Fahrgäste dafür verantwortlich sind, den Betrag des Fahrpreises passend dabei zu haben. Bisher war das bei mir auch immer der Fall, oder sonst habe ich ein kleines Trinkgeld gegeben. Diesmal hatte ich aber nur große Scheine, also musste ich am Flughafenterminal erstmal einen Laden finden, der mir das Geld wechseln konnte und lief gemeinsam mit dem genervten Taxifahrer durch das Terminal. Am Ende musste ich ein Getränk kaufen, um kleinere Scheine zu erhalten. Der Fahrer nahm das Geld mit finsterem Blick entgegen und verließ das Terminal ohne ein Wort zu sagen.

My first of two flights that day went from Almaty to Astana. While I waited three hours without functioning WiFi, the weather got worse and worse. Thunderstorms, heavy rain, in between there was even hail. I was worried that we couldn't take off and I would miss my connecting flight in Astana. After an hour delay we were able to take off after all. At the start I honestly had a bit of a queasy feeling in this weather.

Mein erster von zwei Flügen an diesem Tag, ging von Almaty nach Astana. Während ich ohne funktionierendes W-LAN drei Stunden wartete, wurde das Wetter immer schlechter. Gewitter, Starkregen, zwischendurch hagelte es sogar. Ich war schon besorgt, dass wir nicht starten können und ich meinen Anschlussflug in Astana verpasse. Nach einstündiger Verspätung konnten wir dann aber doch abheben. Beim Start hatte ich, ganz ehrlich gesagt, aber doch ein etwas mulmiges Gefühl bei diesem Wetter.

On the way I even got a sandwich and a small dessert, which is anything but a matter of course, with a one and a half hour flight for 28€ I think.

Unterwegs gab es dann sogar ein Sandwich und eine kleine Süßspeise, was alles andere als selbstverständlich ist, bei einem eineinhalbstündigen Flug um 28€, wie ich finde.

In Astana a cloudless sky awaited me, but there was an icy wind. I was used to this weather from the first days in this city.

In Astana erwartete mich ein wolkenloser Himmel, doch dafür wehte ein eisiger Wind. Dieses Wetter war ich ja schon von den ersten Tagen in dieser Stadt gewohnt.

With my boarding pass, which I had printed out at the hotel in Almaty before the check out, I passed the passport and security check. But suddenly there was confusion, numerous security officers handed my boarding pass back and forth and discussed it. Finally, they came to the conclusion that it could not be accepted. Together with a few other (German-speaking) travellers, we had to return to the ticket counter together with an official in order to get new boarding passes printed out there and then again for passport and security checks. Of course the whole thing was a bit incomprehensible, but I always find such episodes quite funny, which one could not say about the other travellers. They made a huge drama out of it and discussed it with the always friendly security officers. Oh, sometimes I understand why we Germans/Austrians are said to be unrelaxed abroad 😉

Mit meiner Bordkarte, die ich mir noch im Hotel in Almaty vor dem check out ausdrucken ließ, ging es dann vorbei an der Pass- und Sicherheitskontrolle. Doch plötzlich gab es Verwirrung, zahlreiche Sicherheitsbeamte reichten meine Bordkarte hin und her und diskutierten dabei. Schließlich kamen sie zu dem Entschluss, dass sie nicht akzeptiert werden kann. Zusammen mit ein paar anderen (deutschsprachigen) Reisenden, denen es gleich erging, mussten wir gemeinsam mit einem Beamten zurück zum Ticketschalter, um dort neue Bordkarten ausdrucken zu lassen und danach nochmals zur Pass- und Sicherheitskontrolle. Natürlich war das Ganze etwas unverständlich, aber ich finde solche Episoden ja immer ganz lustig, was man von den anderen Reisenden nicht behaupten konnte. Sie machten ein riesiges Drama daraus und diskutierten mit den stets freundlichen Sicherheitsbeamten. Ach, manchmal verstehe ich warum uns Deutschen/Österreichern im Ausland Unentspanntheit nachgesagt wird 😉

After all bureaucratic hurdles had been overcome, I was faced with the next challenge. I still had a lot of Tenge (Kazakh currency) left, but there was no exchange office in the whole terminal. The employees of the duty free shop were also not allowed to exchange money. My plan was to pay a small thing of about 2€ with all my remaining Tenge and to get the balance back in Euro. After a lot of consideration and consultation with his colleagues, a friendly employee of the shop finally did this favor to me. So I could even change my money to a great exchange rate.

Nachdem alle bürokratischen Hürden überwunden waren, stand ich vor der nächsten Herausforderung. Ich hatte noch sehr viel Tenge (kasachische Währung) übrig, allerdings gab es keine Wechselstube im gesamten Terminal. Die Angestellten des Duty Free Shops durften auch kein Geld wechseln. Mein Plan war, eine Kleinigkeit um 2€ mit meinen gesamten restlichen Tenge zu bezahlen und den Restbetrag in Euro zurück zu bekommen. Nach reichlichem Überlegen und Rücksprache mit seinen Kollegen, ließ sich ein freundlicher Mitarbeiter des Shops schließlich dazu hinreißen. So konnte ich mein Geld sogar zu einem tollen Kurs wechseln.

Next on the agenda was the five and a half hour flight to Budapest. It was absolutely smooth and so I arrived at the airport relatively tired, just before midnight. After the entry check I went straight to my car in the airport car park. Even before my departure I had folded down the back seats and set up a sleeping camp. My car is relatively small, so I could not stretch out, but at least until 06.00 o'clock in the morning I slept very well.

Als nächstes stand der fünfeinhalbstündige Flug nach Budapest auf dem Programm. Dieser verlief absolut ruhig und so kam ich relativ müde, kurz vor Mitternacht am Flughafen an. Nach der Einreisekontrolle ging es gleich zu meinem Auto auf dem Flughafenparkplatz. Schon vor meiner Abreise hatte ich die Rücksitze umgeklappt und mir ein Schlaflager eingerichtet. Mein Auto ist zwar relativ klein, also ausstrecken konnte ich mich nicht, aber immerhin bis 06.00 Uhr morgens schlief ich tief und fest.

For brushing teeth and breakfast I went straight back to the terminal. But before that I repacked a little bit. I left the dirty laundry in the car, but fresh laundry was added, which I had taken along from the beginning and stored in the car. After a relaxed morning at the airport, the nine-hour flight to Toronto was my next stage.

Zum Zähneputzen und Frühstücken ging es dann gleich wieder ins Terminal. Zuvor packte ich aber noch etwas um. Die Schmutzwäsche ließ ich im Auto, dafür kam frische Wäsche dazu, die ich auch schon von Anfang an dafür mitgenommen und im Auto gelagert hatte. Nach einem entspannten Vormittag am Flughafen, war der neunstündige Flug nach Toronto meine nächste Etappe.

The plane was only half full and so I had a whole row of seats for myself, very pleasant! In the late afternoon I finally arrived in Canada for the first time and after the entry formalities I took the train and the subway directly to my accommodation, where I fell into bed tired and exhausted.

Das Flugzeug war nur halbvoll und so hatte ich eine ganze Sitzreihe für mich allein, sehr angenehm! Am späten Nachmittag kam ich schließlich zum ersten Mal in Kanada an und nach den Einreiseformalitäten ging es dann mit dem Zug und der U-Bahn direkt zu meiner Unterkunft, wo ich erstmal müde und erschöpft ins Bett fiel.
