ALMATY - Kazakhstan's old Capital [EN/DE]

Hey guys! Today I would like to tell you about my impressions of the city where I spent the last few days. Almaty is the largest city in Kazakhstan and was the capital of the country until 1998. In direct comparison with Astana, however, Almaty looks more like the smaller of the two cities. The metropolis of 1.8 million inhabitants has no metropolis feeling. Everything seems very quiet and also the number of tourists is quite limited.

Hallo Leute! Heute möchte euch von meinen Eindrücken aus der Stadt berichten, in der ich die letzten paar Tage verbrachte. Almaty ist die größte Stadt Kasachstans und war bis zum Jahr 1998 auch Hauptstadt des Landes. Im direkten Vergleich mit Astana, wirkt Almaty aber eher wie die kleinere der beiden Städte. Großstadtfeeling kommt in der 1,8 Millionen Einwohner zählenden Metropole nicht auf. Alles wirkt sehr ruhig und auch der Touristenandrang hält sich eher in Grenzen.

A real city center is hard to spot, there is no real main square and no historical old town. The "Arbat" promenade can best be described as the center of the city.

Ein richtiges Stadtzentrum ist schwer auszumachen, es gibt keinen wirklichen Hauptplatz und keine historische Altstadt. Am ehesten kann man die Flaniermeile „Arbat“ als Zentrum der Stadt bezeichnen.

During my time in Almaty I forgot that I was in Central Asia really often. The city clearly has a Russian character. By the way, in Kazakhstan, in daily life only Russian is spoken, which is very different from the Kazakh language.

Während meiner Zeit in Almaty vergaß ich immer wieder, dass ich mich in Zentralasien befinde. Die Stadt hat nämlich ganz klar einen russischen Charakter. Übrigens wird in Kasachstan, im täglichen Leben ausschließlich russisch gesprochen, das sich stark von der kasachischen Sprache unterscheidet.

Architecturally, Almaty is already clearly in the shadow of the new capital. Nevertheless there are some highlights, like the huge building complex "Nurly Tau", which is not finished yet.

Architektonisch steht Almaty bereits ganz klar im Schatten der neuen Hauptstadt. Trotzdem gibt es einige Highlights, wie den riesigen Gebäudekomplex „Nurly Tau“, der jedoch noch nicht fertiggestellt ist.

Another highlight is the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, which is located in a quiet place in the middle of a park. However, renovations are taking place here at the moment, so that one cannot see much of the church.

Ein weiteres Highlight ist die russisch orthodoxe Kathedrale, die sich in ruhiger Lage, mitten in einem Park befindet. Allerdings finden hier zur Zeit Renovierungsmaßnahmen statt, sodass man von der Kirche nicht viel sehen kann.

You can get an overview of the city from the "Kok Tobe" lookout, which is very easy to reach by cable car, but during my two attempts to visit it, I wasn't very lucky. The first time the cable car was not working and the second time there was a thunderstorm coming up.

Einen Überblick über die Stadt kann man sich vom, sehr einfach per Seilbahn erreichbaren Aussichtspunkt „Kok Tobe“ verschaffen, allerdings war ich bei meinen beiden Versuchen, die Aussichtsplattform zu erreichen, nicht gerade vom Glück verfolgt. Beim ersten mal war die Seilbahn nicht in Betrieb und beim zweiten mal zog gerade ein Gewitter auf.

With a large camera around your neck you stand out in this city like a colourful bird of paradise and are critically observed from all sides. Sometimes it was much more comfortable for me to take pictures with my phone and to attract less attention.

Mit großer Kamera um den Hals fällt man in dieser Stadt auf, wie ein bunter Paradiesvogel und wird von allen Seiten kritisch beäugt. Zwischendurch war es für mich deutlich angenehmer mit dem Handy zu knipsen und dadurch weniger Aufsehen zu erregen.

Almaty is a very green city. Almost all major roads are lined with trees and there are countless smaller and larger parks.

Almaty ist eine sehr grüne Stadt. So gut wie alle größeren Straßen, werden von Bäumen gesäumt und es gibt unzählige kleinere und größere Parks.

With the subway you can reach many places very fast and cheaply. As in Moscow and Kiev, many stations look like underground palaces.

Mit der U-Bahn kann man viele Orte sehr schnell und günstig erreichen. Wie in Moskau und Kiev gleichen viele Stationen auch hier unterirdischen Palästen.

To be honest, Almaty doesn't really suit my taste when it comes to cities. I miss the feeling of being in a vibrant metropolis. But I can imagine that many of you would love this quiet, relaxed atmosphere. Almaty is worth a trip in any case, especially because of the possibilities for excursions into the nature.

Ganz ehrlich gesagt trifft Almaty nicht wirklich meinen Geschmack, was Städte angeht. Ich vermisse hier das Gefühl, mich in einer pulsierenden Metropole zu befinden. Ich kann mir aber vorstellen, dass viele von euch gerade diese ruhige, entspannte Atmosphäre lieben würden. Eine Reise ist Almaty auf jeden Fall wert, schon allein wegen den Ausflugsmöglichkeiten in die Natur.

So, that's it for my reports about Kazakhstan. Unfortunately my time here is over. As so often, it was much too short, but I have already decided to reduce my travel speed in the future. My next destination is Toronto and of course I will tell you about my impressions and experiences from there. I hope it will be as interesting for you as it will be for me!

Wie so oft, war sie viel zu kurz, aber ich habe bereits beschlossen, mein Reisetempo zukünftig zu drosseln.
