I'm staying in one of the many wildlife conservancies that border the Maasai Mara national reserve in Kenya. For the next couple weeks I'm going to try and post each evening from The Naboisho Conservancy.

Today we went on a bush drive. I'm going to start adding pictures and telling you about some of the incredible animals that live here...

Hippos

These hippos will live in and around this pool their entire life. Spending so much of their day in these waters means their excrement colours the pool brown - despite how disgusting it sounds their excrement provides food to support an entire ecosystem.

In the evening as the sun goes down the Hippos will graze and this is when they become very dangerous and earn their title as the most dangerous animal in Africa. If you come across them out of the water they panic because they are away from the waters protection.

When they panic, they charge. For such a big animal they can easily outrun a human, reaching up to 20 mph. On the water you aren't much safer either - there are lots of stories of people in canoes being attacked and capsized by hippos.

If you are regular to my posts you should know that I'd try get a few pictures of hippos out of the water - the sun was going down at the end of the night and we noticed the hippos come out to start grazing.

Elephants

As we got further into the bush we came across some Elephants. These animals are truly magnificent. When a herd of elephants comes across a dead elephant or leftover bones they will have what appears to be a ceremony.

It may seem like Anthropomorphism, but it has been recorded time and time again that elephants will hold what appears to be a funeral to mourn the dead.

There are even suggestions that Elephants will actually cry during the ceremonies as they touch the bones of the deceased and console each other with a visibly dampened mood. Elephants are intelligent, and emotional animals.

Ivory is still extremely sought after and can sell to the black market in Asia for hundreds of thousands of pounds for one tusk - in response a massive anti poaching movement has sprung up.
