The Dancing Dreamers with DJ Damashii Episode 17 Recording and Recap: Nastiness in the Salt Lake City EDM Scene, and Maclain Drake's Work Through Vibe Music Events!

This week's episode of The Dancing Dreamers with DJ Damashii featured a discussion about the Salt Lake City EDM scene. I recently had the misfortune of stumbling upon some posts that devolved into nasty threads which really showed the true colors of several people who are well known in the local industry.

I was so disappointed to discover that even the Marketing Director of one of the main production companies in SLC was saying nasty things and making threats of physical violence several times. The craziest part is that even as the show was happening, he was listening and still trying to justify his actions. Instead of acknowledging the error of his ways, he is sticking to his guns with everything he said. He has since taken down his post, but I have all the screenshots for anyone who is interested.

I got really passionate about it because that's not the kind of community that I want here in Salt Lake City. That's not PLUR at all, and the main reason I even go to EDM events is because of the PLUR. That's what I believe the SLC scene should be built on, not this pathetic tearing others down garbage that I've been seeing lately. If there's no PLUR then why even go?

Why would I ever support an artist or a company that has shown their true colors like that? People like that are obviously only concerned about money and don't have the love of the music and love of the community in their heart. And that's not what the scene should be about. Sure, those people have spent years in the industry building it up to what it is today, but that still doesn't excuse their ugliness.

What most people don't understand or fail to acknowledge is that we, the consumer of the experience, have the power to shape the community and direct the future of our scene. We can choose to keep supporting "industry titans" who have all the connections and rep built up over the years but don't actually live by the central tenets of EDM culture, or we can choose to spend our money elsewhere and support artists and companies who understand the importance of mutual support and community building.

It's a dog-eat-dog world out there, but Salt Lake City doesn't have to be like every other big city market. We should be striving to establish a united, familial feel across the board and we should all be supporting each other.

In the second hour of the show, Maclain Drake, Owner and President of Vibe Music Events, came over to talk about the work that he does to create inclusive and accessible music events for the deaf and hard of hearing community. We talked about Vibe Music Events, how he got into raving, and how he started Vibe. He told the story of the first show he put together through Vibe, and then he went over the various technologies he's been developing for enhancing the sensory experience at shows.

He also talked about his work with the autistic community and how Vibe is helping to address their needs as well. We eventually started talking about The Art Factory, the venue that hosts Vibe events. He talked about his personal feelings about the Salt Lake City EDM scene and the direction it's taking, and the kind of artists that he loves.

I learned a lot from my discussion with him, and I hope you did, too. I'm definitely looking forward to attending more of Vibe's events in the future!
