Ford: From a Car Business, to a Debt Business, and Now to a Surveillance Data-Mining Business by Spying on Debtors

in #technology6 years ago (edited)

Capitalism has seen a shift from more business being about making things and getting people to use them -- such as cars and other products -- into businesses that seek to obtain or extract money by loaning money they own or can liquidate. But is this a sound practice for the business world to shift towards? Not according to the last decade.

The drive for many to build themselves up as financial institutions, and our support of these endeavors, led to a financial crisis. The biggest example of failure is the Lehman Brothers global financial services firm which was taken out in the last bubble popping from the subprime mortgage fiasco. And others like AIG and Goldman Sachs were begging for handouts to be saved from ruin.

But we even saw failures in real-economic businesses like Ford and GM, as they were caught up in trying to become financial institutions themselves as they converted from car-making to loan-making businesses and nearly died out. Unfortunately for the rest of us, these institutions were considered "too big to fail" and the government bailed them out with out tax money in order to prevent an implosion of the economy. They engaged in faulty businesses practices, and we paid the price.

This business model of trying to extract value instead of providing sticking to real-value products lead to the demise of Toys R' Us and Sears. equity firms get involved in ownership of profitable businesses, sell of their assets, get banks to loan them millions, then cash out with bonuses and dividends and let the business default on the debt to fail and fall under.

With those lessons, some aren't learning. Like Ford CEO Jim Hackett. He is celebrated his shift from a car business to a debt-issuance business and into a massive data mining plan in a recent interview on Freakonomics Radio. Ford Credit now accounts for 1/3 of the companies total profits.

Hackett wants to increase the revenue from non car-making by getting into the data and surveillance-spy money making racket like other tech giants. He wants to use "the leverage he could exert over his debtors to force them to let him spy on them (for example, by doubling down on GM's car radio surveillance), and then cross-referencing this data on the data borrowers are forced to supply in order to buy their cars, and with data-sets from corporate acquisitions like the scooter company Spin."

In the interview, Hackett said:

“We have 100 million people in vehicles today that are sitting in Ford blue-oval vehicles. That’s the case for monetizing opportunity versus an upstart who maybe has, I don’t know, what, they got 120, or 200,000 vehicles in place now. And so just compare the two stacks: Which one would you like to have the data from?"

"The issue in the vehicle, see, is: We already know and have data on our customers. By the way, we protect this securely; they trust us. We know what people make. How do we know that? It’s because they borrow money from us. And when you ask somebody what they make, we know where they work, you know. We know if they’re married. We know how long they’ve lived in their house because these are all on the credit applications. We’ve never ever been challenged on how we use that. And that’s the leverage we got here with the data."

The seducers, dominators and exploiters of the financial world are taking the real-economy producers for a ride (pun intended) by convincing them to shift away from making things people need to extracting value through loans and issuing debt. This positions them at the bottom of pyramid scheme, hoping to capitalize on a failed business model that is about to crack. They empty their pockets as the con-artists at the top suck it up and walk away with all the money in the end.

Ford's move to amplify the profit seeking with a surveillance business is not a good strategy. The world's biggest debt issuers are coming under scrutiny again, and so too are the new kids on the block, the surveillance businesses. Massive regulation is is being talked about as another 2008-like financial crisis is looming around the corner.

Not sure who we are they are referring to.

I am so tired of these businesses wanting to track and record everything we do. Just earlier I tried to open a Twitter account to Tweet my posts here, and not 5 minutes into setting it up they claimed my behavior was suspicious (I hadn't posted one thing, was setting up the profile). Demanded I give them my phone number. I typed F you in the number box and closed myself out. No way they need my phone number.

They have created cars that are so technical now that they are as expensive as houses used to be, and one would be hard pressed to work on them like the older ones. Between computers and the way they have everything packed together requiring you to take half your car apart to get to anything...smh.

Yeah, ask Tesla owners now how easy it is to repair the earlier models. They can't... lol. Every body wants your cell number now, easier to "help" tailor things to you :P

This is actually a part of an ongoing effort to tie real world identity to social media accounts. FB has been deleting accounts for not having real human names and it has been going on for a while. To scale operations hey are just using algorithms. The more focused your account look like the more likely it is to get flagged by algorithms. I remember not being able to keep sharing FB posts from a single account for more that few times in a row.

Frightening video.

In my opinion Fjord has stopped making cars, and now ... leases, at interest, a vehicle to you.

It is becoming almost impossible to do self maintenance.
As in, now you not only need mechanics skills, you need $5,000 a year for the software upgrade to the engine-computer tool.

You don't ever get to own the car.
At any time Fjord can withdraw their consent from you driving their vehicle.

I guess they are pushing for self driving cars so that not only can they deny you from driving, they can have the vehicle return home to its master.

Didn't know that bit about software upgrades. That's scammy.

I miss my dear old friend privacy. If only he were here to help me and protect me from this invasive world. Last I knew he was on life support and not expected to live. If you are able to see him @krnel give him my best. He is dearly missed and loved.

yeah, it's being attacked on all fronts in many sectors :/

Once capitalism was a method of providing opportunities for all. There were a time when everyone had same right to start his business (theoretically) but now big corporations have made it impossible for the small and medium industries to survive. These giants are fed by governments to grow further in size. They are bailed out by tax-payers hard earned money but they don't have any responsibility towards the society.
In fact, they have become a menace for the independence and freedom of common man.

Yes, they are now a menace to a much needed economic system that has grown out of touch with reality.

Disturbing to say the least. There is no low that these companies will try and stoop to to sell your precious data. They have all of your financial and living information and now mining all of the location data for your car and it's GPS, the 'smart' features of the car. It's a wet dream for organizations like government agencies at the worst, and at best for companies who want to advertise to you. Makes me glad that I know how to work on cars and fix them so I can repair an older model car and keep it going, outside of this disgusting grid of surveillance. Makes me sad though, I really wanted to get a Ford Focus RS, cars a beast!

I miss manual crank windows :P But that's the least of our worries now with all the personal data selling.

Woah man this is crazy... it’s mad how all of these monster companies like ford, Coke, McDonald’s etc all must have started from a small tiny company, possible even a family business or just someone taking a chance. Or were they...?

Too big for their own good, then they need to stay on top of the hill and do anything to stay there.

The primary problem is government interference and the whole concept of "too big to fail". Stop protecting these behemoths and let them die.

Yes, they need to be let to pop under their own incompetence.
