Guzzi looked at Schmeep with laser eyes through the dazzling red and silver-specked cavern. "Schmeep, I swear that if I wouldn't be put to death for attempting it I would try to kill you right now. What are you talking about?"

The grinding sound of the Gar's voice sounded for a few seconds before the rap-based rhythm of the interpreter kicked in. "Why would you try to kill me, Gu-zzi? You know you can't."

"Schez in sauce bottle! Is Sapphire alive?"

The gravel landslide again, the rap counterpoint. "No, Sapphire has died. Her body is lifeless."

Guzzi stared at the armoured body of the Gar without thought. His brain was as numb as if he had taken a class 19 tranq after days of bingeing debauchery.

But without the distant echo of fun.

"But I have asked the Garship to assimilate her mind."

But I have asked the Garship to assimilate her mind.

Guzzi's consciousness struggled like a drowning man to reach the surface.

What?

"What!?" he managed to hurl with venom.

Missing these subtle clues of human discourse, Schmeep continued. "Yes, the Garship will be enhanced by adding her Heraphore consciousness and understanding of humanity."

Before he lunged Guzzi felt his eyes pop. Then the lights went out.

Jazz reset her blaster from 'stun' back to 'utter destruction' then returned it to its holster. "Schez in a sauce bottle. Ha. I'm going to use that."

Schmeep was still considering Guzzi's prone form. "Why did Guzzi jump towards me?"

And for the first time in her life, Jazz was speechless.

Because how do explain to an alien, the most alien of aliens, human feelings like love and hurt? Pain and sorrow? How do you explain to an alien that the finality of death is an unexplained mystery, inviolate and untampered with by humans despite us wielding the technology to create stars? How do you say that it is so far beyond the bounds of social niceties to manipulate a consciousness at the point of death and trap it for eternity within an alien entity as to be monstrous? That waking the dead invokes all of humanities deepest fears, embedded in our psyche since the dawn of time?

"Yeah. 'Bout that..." she sighed. "Don't worry about it. He's just feeling a bit off colour."
