Carrying a Torch for Steem (#244th Steemian so far)
Holy cannoli, Batman! Some months ago, I heard about a social experiment on the Steem platform, started by @geekgirl (hella cool moniker, right?). It's called The Steem Torch (akin to the Bitcoin Lightning Torch), and it's been passed from Steemian to Steemian two hundred and forty three times in (I believe) a little under a year. And early this morning, the beyond awesomesauce @plantstoplanks made me the happiest gal on the blockchain when she passed it my way!

Why is the Steem Torch such a big deal?
As per @geekgirl's original post, "Steem Torch is an experiment to demonstrate the speed and trust in transferring value on Steem social network." When she got the Steem ball rolling, she sent 25 Steem to someone she trusted, who then sent it to someone else, and so on. Over the course of time, people have added a little bit here and there, so it's now grown to 932 Steem, which is worth approximately $122 USD at the moment, as the bear market slumbers on.
But to put a bit of a different perspective on it, that means back when Steem mooned for that brief and glorious moment, the 932 Steem would (using the price on January 3rd 2018 of $8.19) be worth...
$7,633 USD !!!
Hence the, "Holy cannoli, Batman" after the superhero P2P (and I mean that literally - check THIS out!) shouted out on Discord, and I checked my Steem wallet...

My turn to pass the Steem Torch along
However, as nice as it is to see such a tidy sum sitting pretty in my wallet, the whole idea is to pass it along until we hit the awesomely leet number of 1337 torch holders, at which time the final Steemian will either... "donate the total amount to Steem based charities, Steem projects, distribute to minnows, burn it by sending to @null, or ask the community what to do with it.."
Before I do though, I've decided to add 10 Steem to the pot, to make the amount 942. I figured, given that I sponsor the number 42 for @abh12345's weekly Engagement and Curation leagues with a @tipu tip, it seemed like a good number to send it off as.
Oh, and before I forget, there's an account where you can track who has had the torch, starting from the 26th time it changed hands, over at @steemtorch. At the moment, it looks like this...

As soon as the ROCKSTAR GODDESS that is P2P kindly asked me if I'd take the torch (without even having to bribe her beyond the monthly fee I pay her to pretend to be my friend.), I knew I wanted to pass it to Melinda. She is such a bright light on the blockchain, from hosting tags and contests like Feathered Friends and the Shadow Photo Contest, to making cheerful comments on people's posts, and all her wicked awesomesauceness in between! While she's very upfront and honest about the struggles she has with her health, she also manages to keep an upbeat and positive attitude about it all. So it's only natural that such a shining light should get a shiny torch...
