There was a whistle in the air that sounded like artillery. The Raven instantly drops to the ground. The tree behind her exploded sending shrapnel and splinters of sharp wood in all directions, a second shell landed about a dozen or so steps in turn almost throwing her backwards. “Damn, whoever was shooting is really good at it.” Dazed, she momentarily remained on her hands and knees to allow the blood to flow back into her head quick. It would be about sixty seconds before she could expect another round as two other rounds landed at the direction of the ravine entrance. It was a fortunate choice for her should they have chosen to concentrated all their fire upon her.
A figure stepped in through the settling dust, “Are you okay!”, Charles grasped her right arm.
“Yeah, it’s all here.”
“Damn, you’re wounded. You got one, two, three pieces of wood impaled in you.” He watch in awe as the Raven one by one pulled each one out with a painful grunt. Back of the left arm, the left thigh…“As long as they don’t go through my heart I’m gonna be okay since I heal real fast. Would you mind pulling the one out of my left buttocks? Crickets, my outfit is ruined!”
Gun fire began erupt from the ridge pocking the ground around them.
“Sure, have to make it quick.” Charles felt reluctant but braced her hip with his free hand and used the other to pull it out throwing it aside then picking up his rifle and quickly lifted the Raven to cover.
“Oh you’re so sweet Charles.”
“No time to chat.”

“I think we hit her, Continue firing!” The Duke eagerly scanned the area, with the dust still obscuring the Raven’s position he then looked over to the Creekside rushes just to see parts of fake straw filled clothing strewn all over the decimated foliage and began floating down the creek. It was another trick. He panned his spyglass back to the tree. He could observe her struggling to get on her feet. Clearly injured yet miraculously surviving what would usually kill if not seriously cripple any human being. “Cursed be that woman has more than nine lives of a cat! ”Diablo Squad concentrate your rifles on the Raven!” He cursed as he watched the Raven get hastily carried off to cover among rocks opposite side of the ravine. The mortars may still have the range but not accurate enough at this distance, nor their rifles so they would be forced relocate to a closer position. The pirate camp was totally decimated with no bodies. His thought then focused on the remaining Pirates. “Gads! Where are these Pirates at?” He recall positioning the Huntsmann Corps near Creek's head waters cutting off the only other possible escape route, the white rocket signal would have confirmed that.

The Duke looked his officer in light colored uniform, his insignia proudly displayed the Silver Horned skull of the Spanish Diablo corps, "Capitan Jaurez take your corps and advance into the ravine, no prisoners! Leave the witch to Greer!" He turned to Greer, "because I respect your skill and abilities I will send you in now that this Raven is located and trapped." He turned to his Mortar officer, "Mortar support reposition below this ridge at another two hundred yards, hit the camp and the Pirate position, cease fire at Capitan Jaurez' signal."
“Well it’s up to me to fix this devil woman,” The burly Commander of the Night Crawlers grinned, "With pleasure and my usual professionalism Sir!"
The Duke looked at Greer, “She is apparently still alive, alright, do your thing Mr Greer, I'll leave it to your discretion to kill her or not. Take your personal unit and follow Jaurez at twenty paces."

"Keep your shirt." She said. It was hardly any time to be concerned with modesty as the Raven struggled to remove her petticoat for improvised bandages.
Charles pulled the garment from around her boots and began tearing it into more useful strips, "You deliberately took that hit didn’t you."
"I had to make it look good. Ouch! It still smarts."
"What's happening out there Scot!"
The Scotsman peeked over the rocks, "Looks like t'e Spanish lads are a maach'n in, I kin see theer fauncy-gley arm'uh" It was an improved version of the old Conquistador style but was more resistant to most pistol fire and light blades, Ideal in close quarter combat.
The Scotsman levelled his rifle, his eye focused down the length of the barrel to a front line soldier, squeezed the trigger and fired square into his breast plate. The soldier was knocked off his feet, his colleges stopped their advance momentarily to check on him “Levántate!” then resumed their cautious advance. The soldier motioned a cross over his chest, shook off the impact and got back on his feet.
"Yep, tough arm'uh."

He rinsed the wound quick with rum. "Well you already stopped bleeding." Charles tightened the improvised frilly bandage around her left arm only notice her wince from the discomfort. "Still smarting I see."
With her head still pounding and ears ringing the Raven was proficient enough to read his lips, a skill taught by her adopted Italian mother, a useful spy's skill used as a weapon of intrigue in and around the courts and political business of Roma, "Yeah, just not too much tighter."
"I'll have to bandage the thigh too."
She lifted the left side of her skirt, "Go ahead."
He checks the wound, "it's stopped bleeding too, I'd usually cauterize from these kinds of wounds, pretty clean, this will be quick....there...now your buttock."
"Lifting."
A mortar shell explodes it shrapnel well short of their cover saturating the ground with flesh shredding hot iron.
Charles tore away her useless blood soaked pantaloons and focused on the last deep wound. Removed what remaining debris and rinsed the area with the last of the rum.
"Ow!" The Raven glanced at her curious crew mates, "Gentleman, feel free to fire at our enemy to buy us a little more time."
"Aye Ma'am! Whot arrh we waitin fer lads? Let'em 'ave it! Aim fer the face, right aurm or leeg if yea kin!"

The Duke continued scanning the battlefield looking for the remaining Pirate force feeling less certain of his tactics. "Damned where are they?"

Charles crouched back down behind their rocky cover, “Looks about right. Exactly as you figured would happen. Shall I my lady?”
“At your leisure Mr. Vane.” Replied the Raven.
Charles took a deep breath, stood up just above their rocky cover and emptied his lungs into an old Cavalry horn that had seen better days having collected numerous indentations over the years of abuse or neglect. Still It’s brassy sound resonated all over the ravine and beyond awaiting a response.

The Duke also heard the signal echoing out from the ravine. An enemies’ signal. He quickly recounted his troop positions and it began to dawn on him. This ridge was a perfect trap, and from inside the tree line smoking grenades lobbed at their direction landing among the awaiting feet of Night Crawler ranks.
