My son played hockey with (NHL Defenseman) Mattias Ekholm!steemCreated with Sketch.

NHL Defenseman Hangs out with kids 7-14 to teach them about hockey.

So over the weekend The local Ice Center hosted their annual fundraiser for Make a Wish Foundation. It is a clinic for young hockey players to get a chance to get out on the ice with one of the Nashville Predators players. Learning from some of the best in the business, and being on the ice with them is something that is a pretty big deal for dad, (who can't skate), let alone my ten year old, hockey crazed, son!

The last two years the clinic has been run by James Neal, who, unfortunately, departed for the expansion Las Vegas Golden Knights. I recall last year seeing the posts about the clinic and thinking it was a little too expensive, and maybe when he was a bit older. My then nine year old didn't see anything about the clinic, so we let it pass on by.

A year later, lots of regret with that decision as Aiden over the course of the season decided James Neal was his favorite player. We even had to buy him a Neal 18 jersey after Neal had already been selected in the Expansion Draft. Oops. Chance to meet his favorite player and skate with him gone? Bummer.

But this year we were going to do it. The price isn't too bad when you consider it comes with two tickets to an early season game. I hate that the games they give us tickets to are always on school nights, but it is still a nice perk.

The first half of the clinic was spent outside with some of the coaches from the Ice Center. Half the group (the younger group) was in on the ice with Eks, Filip Forsberg, and Calle Jarnkrok. Aiden's group worked on some stretching and off ice exercises that players use to work on their training. Aiden actually took this seriously fr once, went home and imitated what he had been taught! That's new.

Finally, we get in on the ice. I had seen Forsberg and Jarny walking out to the ice, so I was excited to see them skating with Aiden. Unfortunately, they had split duties. Those guys did the first session, and Colton Scissons was on with the older group. You can do a lot worse than the guy who provided most of the offense in game 6 of the Western Conference Finals.

So an hour of on ice time, doing some drills and getting to engage with Colton and Mattias. Pretty cool stuff. At one point Aiden was doing a cone drill and Colton came up behind him and snagged his jersey pulling him back some. Aiden didn't even react, just kept skating like nothing was happening. It struck me at that point as he skated by with a huge grin on his face, my kid has no idea that skating with NHL players isn't something that happens to everyone!

And then Aiden went down to do some passing with Mattias Ekholm. Then it changed from a passing drill to keep away. In the video below, Aiden is the kid in yellow socks who comes into the view a couple of seconds in. He has no fear of going up against one of the best young defensemen in the NHL!

A great time was had by all. Aiden had his usual house league game the following day and, while he did not score a goal, he did put forth one of the better efforts he has had this season.

Below is a link to a news article the NHL.com site did about the clinic and Mattias' involvement with it if you are interested.

Thanks for stopping by! With NHL season right around the corner, things sure are getting exciting around here!!!

Love the post! Too bad he didn't get to take shots on Rinne!

Can I link to your post in my upcoming blog?

No doubt. Of course he doesn't get any elevation on the puck, so Pekka could just lay across the goal and be done. LOL

Link away my friend. Anything reasonable that draws eyes to my blog is welcome.

He could just get into his butterfly position. He is so huge he would cover post to post!

Love your post Mike here is a tip!

Ekholm is a beast. Solid fantasy player also. Preds D core is #1 in the league. Running away.

We certainly hope so. We have some work to do with losing Real Deal and Fishay Fishay Retiring, and now Ellis is going to be sidelined until Christmas with his injury from the finals.

Gotta hope the guys we picked up in the offseason pick things up for us. And we continue to hold out hope that we can somehow work out a deal for Matt Duchene.

We'll see. New season, fresh ice. Let's go get that cup!

What is the rumored price Nashville would pay for Duchene?

If they can be in the playoof picture, and fresh Ellis for the 2nd half is priceless.

not anything we are willing to pay in players. They want a top 4 defenseman, but they aren't getting it. We've got the cap space for his salary with Mike Fisher's retirement. I just don't see us agreeing to what the Avs want player wise.

Maybe if the Avs are totally out of it come trade deadline and the price comes down, but I think they want Eks or Josi, and we aren't giving them up.

No reason too. I have Rinne as one of my keepers in my fantasy league. You see him being the guy there for a couple more years?

Man I dunno. They really like Jusse. I think Pekka is going to be the guy for another couple of years, but they will give the juice enough starts to be a problem fantasy wise. Keeping Pekka pretty fresh was a big part of what got them to the finals, and I can see them resting him more.

Unless they trade Sarros (they have with other talented goalie prospects) I think it may be writing on the wall for Pekka as a every night go to.

Sounds like you are pretty big into fantasy hockey! I was talking to the folks at ccasino about maybe starting something up with hockey, but I haven't played in over a decade. Need to look into it more.

You do ESPN, or NHL.com or...?

I compete a 20 year league on CBS Sports. I just joined last year. It's pretty intense. Like a $200 buy in (and we need 1 more haha)

It's a category league, so it's heads-up, with the winner of the most categories a the victor that week. I won most of my weeks last year off SHG, PPP, Shootout goals & +/-. Makes drafting a lot more interesting.

I'd be into something on Steemit for sure.

I'm a huge Devils fan and have played hockey my whole life. Only sport I really get nuts about.

Ouch! That's a chunk of change to throw down. I'd be lucky to hide $50 from my wife for league fees. LOL

If we come up with anything for Steem Fantasy I will definitely be posting about it. I'm just hoping to get people with more reach than I have interested so we can fill at least one league and maybe get some sponsorships for a winner's pool.

I'm so happy to see my son skating and having a blast with it, although hockey is a stupid expensive sport for a ten year old! But I never learned to skate, so seeing him excel at something I couldn't ever hope to do is a proud thing!
